Title: What happens in Vegas won't stay in Vegas
Post by: Travis on March 24, 2014, 01:35:47 PM
My scheduled cleared up last minute and it looks like I'll be able to attend the Inside Self Storage World Expo. I won't be an exhibitor, but I will be able to attend some of the events including the Legal Learning Live Workshop: Auction Edition, which will also include a discussion about online storage auctions. Speakers will be attorney Jeffrey Greenberger, Dan & Laura Dotson, one of our competitors & Nyle Wells. This is somewhat of a big deal for us, as it is the first time online storage auctions are being recognized as a viable option to the self-storage industry. Of course, I'll keep everyone updated as the events unfold.

Are you allowed to take a photo of the Dotsons as they are on panel?

Probably could, but I don't really want to lug around my camera & camera bag for several hours. Oh, and I don't want to get labeled as the guy with the "man bag" or "murse."   :D

I meant with your camera phone. If it's too far away, if you get a chance to talk to him, get a selfie. Couldn't hurt to ask, because you know I'll post it!

I'll see what I can do. I don't know if there is going to be 30 people or 300 people in this workshop.

Just yell out, "Hey Dan, you agreed to an interview with my writer (mention ChuckG Writer) for my website - that might get his attention. Dotsons do read my tweets and he has agreed to an interview. I don't think he's forgotten. Matter of fact, I'll email him and let him know you'll be there.

I'm sure he'll go out of his way to seek me out.   ::)  Just tell him to look for the short, chubby fluffy, bald guy in the room.   ;D

One thing I learned in life is you get 50% of what you ask for and 100% of nothing if you ask for nothing. I make no promises, but at least I asked. I have a 50% chance he'll say "yes" so why not ask?

Dude, when I worked 10 years in the hotel industry, people asked for the moon! I never asked for things until after that experience. It was a good life lesson.

Off to sin city...won't be sinning, well unless you consider overdoing the buffet a sin!

Off to sin city...won't be sinning, well unless you consider overdoing the buffet a sin!

It's only 3 sins out of 7.

The Seven Deadly Sins: Seven things that are considered the worst things to do.

1. Greed - Wanting too much of something.
2. Gluttony - Similar to greed, but gluttony is the action of taking too much of something in.
3. Lust - The need to fulfill unspiritual desires (not just sexual desires.)

4. Envy - Jealousy; wanting to have what someone has.
5. Sloth - Being too slow or lazy at doing something.
6. Wrath - Vindictive anger; angry revenge.
7. Pride - Being too self-satisfied

Buffets are to spendy.  I'm a grazer, eat 6 times a day but small meals, so buffets are a waste on me.

I hit....
Gambler's Special  At Mr. Lucky's 24/7 in the Hard Rock Hotel. Steak, three grilled shrimp, a choice of potato or broccoli and a salad. It's not on the menu -- you'll have to ask your server -- and is available around the clock.  They ask for a players club card but usually don't hassle you much if you don't have it.   I heard they now require you to buy a beverage too.....     $7.77

LaSalsa Cantina for breakfast because its $3.95.  Not the best food but cheap.

And Secrete Pizza in the Cosmopolitan. Up escalators to third floor, all the way down the hall.
It's not so secrete these days but great pizza by the slice.  It's also where a lot of "friendly ladies" conduct business so don't think your a stud when all the ladies are hitting on you.    ;D

Then there is Coronado Cafe at a South Point.  Its alllll the way down Dean Martin Dr.  so you need a car.
Mid-night to 6am, $2.95 breakfast.  Like Denny's grand slam style.

Most of the time I just buy the cheap food at the cafés after midnight and throw it in the mini-fridge for the next day.   At the Imperial (I think, my memory was a bit.....let's say "cloudy") we got a whole pepperoni pizza for $4.95 and huge sandwich's with chips were $2.95. Fried chicken, 2-piece, with a waffle was $1.99.

I also just have limo (cheaper than cab) swing by Von's and load up on food for the room.

And I've found that if you want cheap eats, look for the sports book.  They tend to put a cafe next to it with cheap food.   Guess they don't want the gamblers wondering off in search of food.....

I just paid $17 for a cheeseburger.   :-[  It was good though, and some guy who was on Americas Got Talent was on stage playing the acoustic guitar.

Man, was it made of unicorn and topped with fairy dust?

I shouldn't make fun.  Grabbed a burger with this girl last week and it came to $26 with bottles of cherry coke and tip. No fries. No sides. Just a burger.   But they were covered in Gruyere cheese and truffle oil sautéed mushrooms.  Pretty darn good.

Over at the Paris they have a burger that costs $777.  Kobe beef and Maine lobster topped with caramelized onions, imported Brie, crispy prosciutto, and aged balsamic vinegar served with a bottle of Dom Pérignon Rosé Champagne.

Why don't you try it and give us a review!?

Yeah...that's more than our monthly grocery bill. Thanks, but I think I'll stick with What-A-Burger. ( For those of you who haven't heard of What-A-Burger, it's a Southern thing. )   ;)

Mmmmm.   Whataburger bacon cheese on Texas toast.    That's the s**t right there!

First time I had it I ordered a meal and asked for toast.  I meant toast instead of fries.
Got home, opened bag and....fries. Disappointment.
Then opened burger and it was on Texas toast.  First bite and was was like this is genius!  Why didn't I think of ordering it this way before?!

What can I say, I'm a simple person.  I get pretty excited over the self serve coke machines too. The freestyle that makes 127 flavors. Pretty cool. And I don't even care for soda all that much.....

Alright, stop. You're making me hungry.

As promised, here is an update from the "Legal Learning Live - Auction Edition" where Dan & Laura Dotson, & Jim Grant (CEO of Storage Battles (now Storage Treasures) were debating the pros/cons of online storage auctions.

Um, I'm going to stay neutral here and just report the facts. Jeffrey Greenberger, an attorney specializing in self-storage, did a great job teaching the course. He's a great speaker and was very informative. He's pretty funny as well.

I'm going to make a long story short, and if you guys have any questions, feel free to ask.

The session started off with panelists answering basic questions. Next, Dan gently eases into how he feels live auctions with auctioneers are better. Jim answers a few questions, then the Dotsons begin their barrage on Storage Battles. Jim was definitely outmatched in the debate. Dan is a celebrity who is used to public speaking and being in the limelight and it clearly showed. However, I think the tides turned when Dan announced that he was starting his own online storage auction site. There was definitely a reaction in the crowd. People were confused since Dan seemed to be speaking out against online auctions, but here he is starting his own site.  ???

Then, the argument gets a little more heated, and the next thing you know Dan informs everyone about his falling out with Storage Treasures and proceeds to call Lance Watkins "Judas," referring to his betrayal. At this point, several audience members got up and left, although the class was running over the allotted time and these people might have just had somewhere else they needed to be.

I will say that Jim did a decent job defending online storage auctions and he definitely kept his cool while under pressure.

This was an entertaining experience to say the least; however, I felt like the discussion on online storage auctions could have been much more in depth.

Are you sure you were awake and this wasn't just a 'happy place' dream?

Oh, I was wide awake.

After the event, there were just a few of us that stayed behind. I got a chance to talk with Dan & Laura. Laura was just as bubbly as she is on TV, just a really nice lady.

It's Laura and Dan's job to get top dollar for every unit they sell. Building excitement (even for unexciting units) is part of their job. Also, I doubt anyone ever comes into the rental office and asks "Who do I pay?"

Ironically, my wife has a fetish for short, chubby fluffy, bald guys. There is truly someone out there for everyone!

Laura was just as bubbly as she is on TV, just a really nice lady.

Please tell me you asked her to stop with that "don't forget to pay the lady" line and to stop saying, "WOOOO" every time a storage unit door is opened. You did do that Travis, didn't you? :(
