Insurance Claims on Ebay

Insurance Claims on Ebay
« on: November 05, 2013, 04:45:01 PM »
So I shipped something and it broke. I got insurance on it, but...

Who is responsible to file the claim through USPS? Is it the seller or buyer?

I'm reading where USPS may want the product back before issuing a refund. I'm not sure how I can do that when the item has been shipped.

Faithful Ebayers, what to do?

I have yet to have to file an insurance claim for something I have shipped, but from what I understand, the shipper has to file the claim, with the assistance of the recipient. The buyer has to be willing to work with you and the post office, whether it is to provide pictures or take the item into their local post office for inspection. As far as starting the process and filing the claim that is on the seller because they purchased the insurance. Sorry, you have to deal with this.

In my experience they always make me as the shipper take the initiative. Hopefully its a cheap item and just standard $100 insurance. If its something bigger it can be a bit of a headache. Also, oftentimes theyll try to pay you for YOUR COST and not the BUYERS PAYMENT amount. THey may want to see an invoice from your supplier.

The item sold for $41. Shouldn't be a headache I hope. It's a canister set that I bought at a yard sale.. Don't see how I could supply a receipt.

The only insurance claim I have filed for something shipped via USPS was a lost package and the insurance was the Ebay ShipCover insurance and all they did was verify it didn't arrive at it's destination within 30 days and gave me my money back, not including the shipping cost. Not the same, I know, but during that issue I did a lot of reading about USPS insurance claims and it doesn't sound too good. Pretty sure you (the shipper) would file the claim and I'm sure since it's a breakage issue they will want to see the item and original packaging. USPS pretty much plays basketball with our packages so they need to be packed well enough to withstand a lot of abuse. Also I have read it takes months to get paid on a claim.  Again, I haven't submitted a breakage claim so I'm just guessing but my guess is they will deny your claim, probably say it wasn't packed well enough. For $41.00 I would just refund the customer and call it a cost of doing business and move on. Just not worth the aggravation.

I did file the claim, still waiting on something to happen. I really hope it's nothing too big to get me my money back.
