Irrational eBay Buyers
« on: February 07, 2015, 04:16:54 PM »
Jeez, I want to strangle this guy who bought an item from me on eBay. The listing clearly says allow 1 business day for shipping. The auction ended Friday night around 9:00 pm CST. The buyer paid around midnight. He emails me Saturday morning demanding that I ship the item on Saturday. I work on the auction schedules all day Saturday so I don't have time to meet his request. He's being really persistent and I have a feeling he's going to leave me negative feedback if I send it to him on Monday. I told him the item will be shipped first thing Monday morning and if that wasn't satisfactory, I would issue a refund. Haven't received a response yet.

Has anyone else had some irrational requests from eBay buyers?

I haven't had that happen but I always stress if I can't get something shipped the next day. I agree with you that if something is sold on Friday then the next shipping day is Monday so you are right and he is wrong. I live in a rural area and our local post office isn't even open on Saturdays. The nearest post office that is open on Saturdays is a 12 mile drive for me. Unfortunately he can still leave nasty feedback even if you are right but hopefully he won't Whenever I get a cranky buyer I check his feedback left for others. You might take a look just to see how he treats other sellers. Still nothing you can do but it might make you feel better to see.

It depends what he says in the negative feedback. If he lies, then eBay will remove it, if you call them.

"Seller was slow to ship the package out" - This is a lie, as long as you have the tracking uploaded and scanned by the postage office before end of day Monday.

If he leaves feedback that says.

"Seller has bad customer service" - This will stick and their's nothing you can do about it.

Yeah, that's the one I'm worried about. I forgot that I offered free shipping, so he can't leave negative feedback for that.

I agree if its stupid, especially if he's not even paying for expedited shipping as a day wont matter much anyway. That said why not just avoid the hassle pack the item off and drop it in a box on your way to an auction, post office doesn't even have to be open just drop it in a box. Otherwise have 2 day shipping. I don't think having 1 day handling time vs 2 day handling time is really going to make that big of a difference in sales and better to underpromise and overdelivery than the other way.

So, just like I thought, the irrational buyer that I mentioned above sent me a demand for a considerable discount. I knew he was trying to extort me so I told him several times that if he was dissatisfied an any way, I would be more than happy to issue him a full refund and pay for return shipping. He responded that he didn't want to return the merchandise, he just wanted me to reduce the price. And of course, when he didn't get his way, my feedback gets dinged.

It's really sad that eBay won't allow sellers to leave negative feedback. Luckily, I was able to add a comment. Not that that really hurts him, bit I did report the transaction to eBay. Hopefully they'll read his emails and remove the negative feedback.

Turns out, this guy is a seller as well. I have a strange feeling that Karma is going to teach him a lesson.  ;)

I don't know which is funnier, that:

1) the buyer paid $265 for $282 worth of store gift card credit

or

2) Your feedback for the last 12 months shows a perfect 5 stars
for shipping and the other feedback items show nothing. That reflects that eBay gives automatic 5 stars for free shipping !

You'd be amazed what buyers will pay for gift cards. I've seen some sell for over 100%. I've been running ads on Craigslist for the past few months offering to pay 50% for any big box store card. Some cards do really well on eBay, while you're lucky to make 70% on others. Lately, I've gotten 97-99% for Lowes cards, 90-91% for Home Depot, I usually keep the Wal-Mart & Target cards for myself...there's nothing like getting groceries & gas half off!

Yeah, I've had several people leave good feedback lately. I guess they just don't take the time to select a star rating.

Last week, I filed a complaint on the buyer listed above, and disputed the negative feedback they left. As expected, no response or change in feedback from eBay. So, I decided to give eBay a call today to try to get this negative feedback removed.

Took about a half an hour to get someone on the phone and another 15 minutes for her to review the communications between the buyer and I, only to have her tell me that she couldn't remove the feedback. I asked to speak with her supervisor and was hung up on during the transfer.

So, I decided to call back and give it another try. This time, the representative was fluent in English, unlike the other, and actually took the time to read the emails between the buyer and I. She let me know that the buyer did violate eBay policy by demanding a discount and expressing that he was unwilling to return the merchandise for a full refund, so she decided to remove the negative feedback.

Just goes to show that they are willing to remove negative feedback, but sometimes you have to be persistent.
