Title: Gas Prices
Post by: aftermath on May 05, 2011, 11:25:33 AM
How have Gas Prices effected your storage auction business?

Ive noticed a lot of "out of towners" haven't show up to the last couple of Auctions here in my town. Also, I haven't left town for an Auction in 2 months!

I figure with so many locals showing up to these Auctions, added with the local whale, it has deterred some people from spending gas money for their gas guzzling trucks to travel for auctions

I've always stuck to auctions pretty close to home for the most part. Sure there's a few facilites a little further away that I normally have good luck at and a few somewhat rural ones I'll drive out to but for the most part there's more than enough auctions within a 30 min radius of me I don't really feel the need to venture much further.

I am somewhat surprised by the guys who drive out my way from Indiana and far North, especially when I havn't seen them buying much but see them at all the auctions in my area and driving their 4 door F250's and stuff like that, can't be cheap.

I drive a 4 cyl Toyota tothe auctions and then borrow a buddies truck and go back to get my stuff or use the facilities truck if they let me.

My car runs on recycled garbage so it really doesn't matter. And if I'm late for an auction I can just go back in time and arrive early.

Gas prices do not stop me at all.
Right now i am paying $3.50 a gallon.
Is it higher then earlier, of course, i used to pay 2.64 for a gallon.
But 3.50 is not a reason to back down, if you can't handle the price of gas, then you are not in the right business.

It just means that you have to charge $25.00-$40.00 more in total sales from a unit. Not a big jump. That again is maybe 10 cents more per item you sell from a unit.

This is nothing more then business math one on one. (raised cost, coverd buy raised sales price)

Gas prices not really effecting me. Since I been in the business prices have been high. I just add it to total of my unit cost along with labor and trash dumping. I also plan very carefully where I am going. So when I do get a chance to go out there, I truly go out there. Just about to take a risk on a 45 min drive to a small town that only has 2 units to auction. So it dont really effect me to much. I am hoping what I would let effect me effects everyone else and they decide not to go because of it. The worse situations that are around, the less competition will be, especially after all this hype goes away and they jump on the next band wagon, which I am thinking it might be being an auctioneer. Since that is the new show on the history channel, or maybe taxidermy :)

I try not letting the price get to me, but it does piss me off, because I live in the midwest and we seem to have the highest gas prices in the country. It is has been at 4.29 for about a week now, new record here, and from what i am seeing it is at least 50 cents cheaper on the west coast.

Today I paid $4.17 per gallon at an Arco. Name brand across the street is $4.27.  This is in central California.

In 2008 our high was $4.54.

There was an auction 30 miles away from me yesterday with three lockers and I decided not to go because of gas prices.  :(

Taxidermy, already tried that business with a buddy of mine years ago.

Taxidermy seems complicated, like you need years of experience to get animals to look alive.

I'll make you all feel good about your gas prices. In the city of Chicago prices are over $5, I try to fill up in the burbs or even NW Indiana if possible but even in the burbs I was paying $4.69 the other day.

TC, I was curious about your car or truck if you don't mind sharing, what do you mean by recycled garbage, do you run off vegetable oil or some other type of fuel?

A buddy of mine was really interested in buying an old VW or Mercedes diesel and doing a conversion.

Another idea if any of you guys are handy with working on engines and stuff. A guy who recently came and bought that wierd bamboo/cane chair from me and a few other items had a big truck, dont recall the model but a 250 or bigger. He had put an old diesel tractor engine in it and was getting fantastic mileage. Again dont remember exactly what he said but it was good.

I am paying 3.99 (and 9/10's!) at my local station now.  Hopefully it will drop a little more after next weekend.

Prices just recently got better here. I was paying $4.69 a week or so ago, down to $4.19 when I filled up the other day and I think I've seen it as low as $3.99 although that may have been with a car wash.

I have a midsize 4 cyl car and have been wanting to get a pickup or at the very least an suv for a while but really hesitant with gas prices.

In addition to auctions it's always a pain not having a truck, just yesterday I needed some drywall from home depot, dry walling my garage, no truck couldn't get it home. Also when my motorcycle breaks down hwo do I get it to the mechanic without a truck.

Not to hijack the thread but just out of curiousity what are you guys driving? Do you drive a truck as a daily driver or just for auctions?

I'm suprised by hwo bad MPG is on even a small 4cyl truck like a Ranger, I think even a 6cyl 4runner gets as good if not better mileage.

I've got on '04 Silverado Crew Cab short box Z71.  Also have an '09 enclosed cargo trailer 7'x14'.  Spend $700=$900 a month on average for gas.  I keep thinking about getting something more economical to drive around day to day for the auctions, but by the time you add on the cost of a vehicle (even a cheap one), insurance, and maintenance, it just doesn't really pencil out that good.

Was considering selling the truck and trailer and buying a car to drive around and an Isuzu NPR or other large box truck for cleaning out units.  Still debating.  I like driving my truck around, it's comfortable! I hate sitting low in a car.

It works out to around $5.30 a gallon here in southwest ontario, but I know it's a lot cheaper across the border in michigan.

7 days later, May 28, 2011, now my gas station is showing $3.87....interesting considering it is Memorial Day weekend. Friggin' gas companies are making billions in profit per quarter...gas should be below $2.00 a gallon.
