Title: Hardest things to find in storage units
Post by: Travis on February 06, 2014, 09:55:48 AM
What are some things that you've been hoping to find in a storage unit but can't seem to get?

I've been looking for a modern range/oven & dishwasher. They don't come up as often as other appliances, probably because ranges & dishwashers are usually left in the house when someone moves.

Large collections of old Magic the Gathering Cards. I hope I find some in every unit, but alas it has been to no avail yet. I unit I passed on I found out later had some in it, doh!  :-[ but I don't think they were as old as what I am looking for. I see ebay auctions everyday of people who found some in storage units, but has not been my fortune yet.

Really nice living room set.   Saw them all the time, now that I want one.....nope.
Right when the housing bubble pop'd and forclosures started you could take your pick.
Unit after unit of nice, new stuff.   Now its back to the "why would someone even store that?" furniture.

Bought my 103rd and 104th unit last week (in about 17 months) and for the first time, I found:

- dishwasher.  Nice little stainless Whirpool one!

- an actual porn collection.  No joke - this guy liked magazines!  Other than the stray mag or dvd, this was the first collection.  Let's hope I don't find another one for another 100 units!

On another note, I did trade those mags to a hauler who took away two truck fulls of dump material.  So that's still a score?!  lol

Nice outdoor furniture. The very first auction I went to had a unit full of very nice stuff. I bid but I was being very cautious. In two years I have yet to see another unit that was even close to that one. I would personally like to redo my backyard. Hopefully some day. I am to cheap to buy all new.

Yeah, same here. I've been looking for good outdoor furniture for over a year now. The average stuff is somewhat rare. I have yet to see the good stuff.

I'm sure I used to see deep fryers all the time.  Recently I decided I wanted one for cheap so I could expiriment melting plastic in it.  I'm not willing to pay much since I am going to use it once and probably destroy it.  Haven't seen one since.

Nice outdoor furniture for me also. 61 units and only a few miscellaneous chairs and tables. The hunt continues.

I wouldn't mind finding a gun or two.  Been doing this on and off since 2007 and have never come across a single one.

Guns are always hard to find.

I'm still waiting on canoes or kayaks & nice salt-water fishing tackle.

I was finding those on occasion a few years ago but nothing recently. If I come across any in the future I know who to PM.

A gun worth more then $100. So far I have found a few really cheap ones nothing great.  Got one locker belonged to a guy who used to own a gun store. It had lot of ammo and holsters in it but no guns.  Great locker.

Gold jewelry.  I find a stray piece now and then still looking for a box full in locker.  Best I have doen is 4 or 5 small pieces.

Sterling - Rarely find would like to find a pile at least one.  70 ounces is my record in one locker but the norm is measured in grams and a few pieces of flatware is an uncommon event.

My son who does scrap says a 4 foot diameter bronze ships propeller is his dream.

Cash-Normally find a few dollars best is over $4K in one locker but that will probably never happen again.

These are my dream finds they are rare seems like one locker in 50 maybe one in 100.

I thought I'd be able to score some vintage video gaming stuff.. like original Nintendo stuff.. I've found 1 game. The Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt combo game that came with the system. Funny how people don't store that kind of stuff anymore.

Modern video game systems and games.  I've never found a PS3 or an Xbox 360, but I've actually come across a lot of vintage Nintendo stuff.

Gold, it seems like every jewelry box is full of costume jewelry and maybe a little silver.  The grandma units have a lot of empty jewelry boxes in them, like maybe the kids took the jewelry when they moved everything into the unit.

I've yet to find a nice bicycle, only Walmart type quality or rusty old bikes.

Funny about the Xbox / PS3...  I bid on one unit that had a PS3 showing and a flat panel about 40" showing (facing the wall)  Paid $425.   I ended up finding no less than 3 ps3's and 7 360's as well as a host of other video game systems.  The real kicker.  The previous owner was a tweaker.  EVERY SINGLE ONE had been taken apart messed up inside and pretty well broken beyond repair.  Made more money off the clothing in the unit than all the electronics combined. Couple pair of alligator skin boots kept it from being a total loss.
