How do you handle the guy that

owns the thrift  store that always gets the units he wants? This guys always out bids you if he wants the unit. He doesnt buy them all but he does get what he wants. How would you handle this?

You could keep bidding. You may pay more than you want to, but then again, so might he if he counters your last bid.

Thanks, I always like to see attribution on such statements so I can look at the source and give it more consideration or comment.

Yes I can. I work in the media and standard practice is 3% of advertisng is paid to those who are speaking on a tv show. And I know what Aand E charges for each spot that runs during the show. Forgot to add in the reruns as well. Its a straight 3% not being paid for each rerun but all toghther for the season. so 11,000 for a season block and Aand E can rerun as many as they choose. You didnt think they were working for free. That would be slave act, can't work a person for free.

Yeah, I googled the pay question after you posted your other thread, and I saw the chacha link and read it; but then and now, I see no mention of the $11,000 figure. Maybe I missed it? (or maybe not) 

You have to bid higher than him if you want it. I don't know how else you can handle it.

Obviously, you don't want to overpay for a locker, but try not to let on when the price is nearing your max. This guy may be able to get a "read" on other bidders and will go just beyond that persons max.

Also, see if there are any patterns to the auctions he attends. If he always hits the same facilities or follows around a couple of the same auctioneers, you may be able to avoid him by attending a different auction.

by bidding him up on lockers u dont care about. Then going high as u can handle on the one u want. Hopefully hell back down when he considers he already paid 3 grand for 2 mediocre lockers

You really need to get some research on this "whale". Going the route of just bidding him up on every unit he wants in hopes that he will back off on the units you want can be a fatal error for you. There is a belief that every bidder has thier limit as to how much they can spend. This is not necessarily the case. I know of multi-millionares who go to storage auctions and if you get on thier bad side you will NEVER win a unit and you can NEVER put enough pressure on them bidding wise. The other way to look at it is everybody has a limit to how much space they have thus how many units they can handle at one time. Maybe if there are enough auctions in your area you can just let this guy get what he wants early and then come in later in the day strong on your bidding. If he already has several units for the day he may not want to bid high on units later in the day.

Well I have 3 of those types of people.  One that has a huge thrift store that is part of a church.  Two others that have stores and are normally in direct competetion with whale 1.  Then we have a few guys that buy for their auction house.

What I have done is befriended the church whale and one of the other thrift store guys.  I give them advice on computers and such and learn what they are looking for, etc.  For the most part the units they want I stay clear of since I'm not into furniture.  This relationship has worked out well so far.

1) I have an outlet to sell furniture and stuff quick and easy if I get any.
2) If they have already purchased a few units and I'm bidding they back off.
3) Learn of other auctions I'm not aware of or see in the paper.
4) I'm learning their normal limits and such which is helpfull on silent auctions.

While there are no friends once the auction starts you can still be respectfull.  I don't run up any of the regulars unless I really want the unit.  Then I go to my max.  For the whales I'll never have the cash to out-bid them if they really want the unit.  So I have to pick and choose my battles.

No he does it if he doesnt like a person and wants to run them off is what I heard

Two ways,
Bid it up so you can win it at a higher price
Or bid it up so he has to pay more.

Not trying to sound rude, but your wanting advice on how to handle the guy who buys every unit he wants? That's really simple, you just bid higher.

Great advise we have one Whale that has about three different people attend auctions with out him. He has an auction house but he is not in the habit of bidding to much for a unit. But we have not gone head to head with him either. Another one he is very stand offish not sure what he has going maybe a store and I don't think he is local three days of Auction's hales stuff around from the day before.
So pick your battles try and find the less advertised auctions, If he is there may have some respect for you finding it... I heard today about an Auction that had 2 people at it. Of course he did not tell me where it was.
