Hypothetical question: Suppose there was a storage auction information service in your area which called every storage facility within a 60 mile radius. If this information service provided information on 100% of all storage auction events in your area & provided 30-40 auctions per month that you couldn't find on any other website, at what price would you subscribe to this website?

I am just wondering, why would someone pay for something that is free and easy to find?
I know what you want to do, and in some cases it is a good idea. But not when it comes to storage auctions.
You have to remember that most storage places run their auctions on the same day every month. And they have flyers printed out to tell you the upcoming auctions the next 8 months.
So when you have been to alle the auctions once, you know when their next will be.
I can't see this beeing something alot of people would use, this would be for the lazy ones, the ones who don't want to work to make this happend, and they wll be out of the business sooner then later.
If you think of building a website and make this your side business? i think you will be spending alot of time and some money on it, and i am not sure you would get the turnover you are hoping for.

The purpose of this survey was to find a fair price point for services like ours. I currently own & operate https://auctionstx.com/houston-storage-auctions/ and we actually call over 1400 storage facilities twice a month. It took over a month to build our database and it requires constant updating. We are currently the only service to provide information on 100% of all storage facilities in the greater Houston & surrounding areas. We provide listings for roughly 300 storage auction events every month including 25-40 auctions that cannot be found on any other website.
Yes, there is free storage auction information available in every city but, in the greater Houston & surrounding areas, we have over 1400 storage facilities. There are two main newspapers that publish notices for about half of all storage facilities in this area. There are also over 40 smaller local newspapers within our area, most of which don't post their content online. Nobody is going to subscribe to and read that many newspapers. It would cost several hundred dollars a month and consume hours of your time every day.
Most other major cities in the U.S. don't have a service that covers 100% of all auctions. Some areas have newspapers & auctioneers that may handle a majority of the market but they only promote storage auctions that they are profiting on somehow. Unless a service like our exists in your area, or you are willing to devote a majority of you time to collecting information, you will always be missing some of the auctions in your area. Of course this may vary depending on the size of your town. Also, Keep in mind, our service unites over 40 smaller cities within the greater Houston & surrounding areas and we are very thorough at collecting the information we provide for our subscribers.
Anyway, getting back to the subject. The question is not if it will work, it does, (the creator of this forum currently operates 3-4 services like ours). Rather, the question is, if this kind of service existed in your area, at what price would you consider joining. This question is Hypothetical, we have no plans of expanding nationally. Information collected from these results will only be used to offer our current & future members a quality service at the most reasonable price.

I know lots of people who would pay for this service so it's a good idea.
I don't know of any old timers who would pay for a service like this though. Also, personally I don't see any reason to go more than 20 min from my home, more than enough facilities and auctions in that radius and its not difficult to keep up with that so I personlaly would never pay for info.

Really, its about having more options. In the Houston area, there have been so many new buyers attending storage auctions that it has become almost impossible to buy a unit that you can still profit on. I was talking to a storage facility owner a few weeks ago who is located in a rural area. He said only 2 people usually show up to his auctions. Auctions that are advertised in smaller local newspapers generally have fewer people who attend. This is what our service is all about....helping storage auction buyers get off the beaten path and attend auctions that have fewer buyers in attendance. If my members are able to attend just 1 auction and purchase just 1 unit at a price lower than what they would pay at other auctions, then our service has paid for itself.
Also, I agree, it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks but, the old timers are usually my best customers. They are the ones who depend on storage auctions to make their living. Since the auctions advertised in the mainstream are flooded with new buyers, they have to get off the beaten path if they want to survive in this business.

Attending storage auctions (post storage auction reality shows) is like the California gold rush. Tons of people are rushing in. You have to change your location or your methods if you still want to cash in. Pardon the analogy.

I am in California and would love to find the less advertised sales with out the extra time needed to scour dozens of papers.The crowds for the big names are ridiculous here,found one auctioneer recently that never advertises and much better but numbers still not exactly cheap

I would pay you $100 a month if you could provide 30-40 auctions per month I couldn't find on any other website in my area. Could you also guarantee that no more than 30 people would show up at those auctions?
I truly believe in my area there are not that many "hidden" auctions. So, if you ever start the service in the Sacramento, San Francisco, CA area we're good to go.

I just did a search here for fun.
I spent 2 minutes to find over 1100 auctions in Houston the last two weeks + two weeks ahead. And the best part is, it was free.
I can do this in every state (except Alaska and Hawaii), so guys come on, don't be lazy and stop wasting your money on something you can do for free, and it only takes you about 10 minutes a week to stay on top of it.

I just pick out a few, there is tons of auctions that i have found, just spending 5 min on it.
I mean this is just to show people (newbies) that you can do this for free.
I also believe that if you are serious about doing this business, you should find out about this on your own.
When i started, i spent months preparing, doing research, planning, and attending without bidding. I spent maybe 6 to 8 months just learning about the business and slowly get my feet wet. I believe that everyone who wants to do this must go the long way and the hard way. If you don't do it, well then i think you will be lost really fast.

Well, it certainly is possible to find all these auctions no matter what state you're in however, most people won't go to this much trouble...and yes, I know increased success might demand it, but how sucessful do we have to be ?
If you've got a place to live, a way to get around and food and water (and an internet connection) what more do you need? MAYBE MORE OF EVERYTHING ? ;D

It is not that hard, google, a cup of coffee and 10 min, then you should be good to go.
Don' throw your money away on something you can have for free.
Ask your self this, if you had 150 dollars, would you spend that on a service that sent you information, or would you spend those 150 dollars on one or several lockers?

How many newspapers publish legal notices in Memphis? Less than 5? Once again, Houston has a population of over 4,000,000 people not including the people without Visas. Over 1400 storage facilities and over 40 smaller local newspapers. Every city is different. In some, it is easier to find auction information than in others. It is probably easy to find auction listings when you only have to look in a few places.

Here is an example of a typical week in Houston. However, sometimes we have over 40 facilities having an auction in the same day. On just one Public Storage or U-Haul run, you might be able to look at over 80 units in a 12 hour period.

I know that you are just trying to make a point but you actually are missing about 75% of the free content that is available on the internet for Houston, not including the 25-40 auctions in our area that you cannot find on any website besides ours. If I could find all of the auction information by going to a few websites, do you think I would spend three weeks out of the month calling facilities and doing data input?
Most national & free websites list the major storage facilities auctions. This is nothing new. Now try finding a listing for Fry Rd. Mini Storage in Katy, TX, a suburb of Houston, without calling the facility. The newspaper they advertise in doesn't put their legal notices online. We list 25-40 of these auctions every month that are almost impossible to find unless happen to live in the small community and subscribe to the local newspaper.

All kidding aside, if you think this list is impressive you should check out the sample list at storageauctions.com, they cover California Auctions but it looks like they do a good job as well.
They charge $84 a year (only available by the year) and their data is often incorrect. Personally (as you might guess) I don't subscribe to it but I know people who do. Some of those subscribers then take the weekly "update" they receive in email and "sub-let" (that is resell the data) to other poor schlubs thus depriving the original provider of income. How about it Houston ?

It's inevitable, that's why we are constantly monitoring our competition. I scour the search engines every week. We actually had an auctioneer in Houston, last week, that created a website with a almost identical URL. He even cut and pasted the content off of my home page and put it on his website.
It took 4 emails but after I threatened to have him arrested and sue him for copyright violations, the content was removed.
If you have something unique, others will try to imitate it.
I have to call some storage facilities, so I have to run. It has been entertaining!

Actually, the folks in my area who subscribe to the service and then "resell" the data they receive are only emailing it out to a few of their cronies. If one subscribes and it goes out to 8 people it has only cost each of them about $10 bucks for the year's worth of updates.
I would never advocate this kind of "theft of services", but it happens and it's a fact of the business.
Time to pull an Ameche, TC, and again if you don't get that reference you're not old enough...that even predates the reference to Paul Harvey. ;D

This has nothing to do with people like me, who has been in the game for some time.
Your services is directed to the newbies, and you will by doing that just make the problem bigger.
We have places here in Memphis to, that list their auctions in local papers, or in some other media that most people don't read.
That does not mean no one knows about it. Infact the ones who knows these places are the ones who are serious about their business.
Your services is nothing more then a "hype" business, where you want to hook th newbies to buy your product, you know just as well as me that none of the oldtimers has any use for this information, or want to pay for it.
I found tons of auctions in that area you mention, and in Katy. I also found older auction notices from the one you mention.
Not them alone, but everyone that goes under Houston self storage umbrella.

Here is an example of a typical week in Houston. However, sometimes we have over 40 facilities having an auction in the same day. On just one Public Storage or U-Haul run, you might be able to look at over 80 units in a 12 hour period.

You can say what you like about my company and we can argue our points all day long.
The fact is - We provide a quality service to all storage auction buyers, regardless of their skill level.
The website you used to pull up auctions for our area only listed large storage facility chains.
I don't know where you saw the information claiming to have 1100 auctions in the Houston area. The entire state of Texas might have 1100 auctions per month. Our coverage area is 60 miles in all directions from downtown Houston. We call every facility in town (all 1400) and we average about 300 auctions every month.
Even the largest auction list in California list about 800 auctions per month for the entire state.
Bottom line, when I was asked to provide our company's sample list of the auctions in the Houston area, I did, and it was so large that it crashed the server. I think that speaks for itself.

If you had read what i said, you would have seen the facts.
I got 22 pages with auctions in Houston, on eac page there was 50 notices.
Not all of them are storage auctions, some are tax lien auctions and car auctions. But still, alot of people who do storage auctions also do other types.

I'm dropping this subject....I think if you really read most of my posts, you will find that they do contribute substantially to the forum. Yeah, there are a couple of pages that I only dropped a brief statement and a link but I believe they were in the South thread. Who dares visit that uncharted territory anyway?
