Title: Jewerly
Post by: jrossjr79 on May 02, 2011, 04:04:24 PM
I am wondering on this topic. This is what I generally do. All silver, gold, and platinum I scrap out for its melt value unless it is Tiffany, a Vintage or Antique Heirloom piece, or James Avery.

Curious on what every one else does.

I take it all to a coin/gold shop which I trust.

I have them look at the stuff that is not that great as jewelry and give me a price.
Before I accept or reject it I then ask about another piece (the best piece and one I have not shown) and
get a price on it to combine with the other.

This way I have some feel for what the scrap value is as opposed to what I might ask as a jewelry piece.
About 25% of the time I keep the best piece and sell it at the flea or on eBay.

As a side note. At my flea market there are 5 guys with "compramos oro y plata" signs. They buy it and then resell it somewhere down the line. This is at a flea market with about 200 or so total vendors. Even the low end flea markets in town have these people buying and selling.

The only platinum I have run into was the two catalytic converters which were stolen from two separate cars about 1 year ago. I guess that's what insurance is for.
