Title: Look at all these books that have been written about storage auctions!
Post by: Travis on December 31, 2012, 09:23:39 PM
I went over to Amazon.com to see how many books have been written about storage auctions and I was amazed at how many there were, 48 in all. I couldn't take some of them seriously just based on the titles alone. Some of them are poorly written e-books with 40 pages or less. One has to wonder which, if any, truly educate the reader.

I guess I'd only need the "how to make boxes of cash" book.......if I could do that, I wouldn't have to worry about the rest!

Out of curiosity do you know how many of those on the list have an affiliate program attached to the sale?

No, I don't. I hadn't even heard of 30 of these books before.

store me makes a good point. i would say 30% of the books are really vague and basically nothing but a sales presentation for you to buy their program for $99 that gives you inventory sheets and a bunch of other stuff you cna find free online. im not knocking anyone as i have my own storage auction book and lets be honest pretty much any how to guide is rehashed info you can find free on the net but as long as its a good written book someone consolidates all that info for you so you dont have to search it all out individually.

my book is how to make money with storage unit auctions. it was on the list. i dont have any upsells for programs its just the book. i sell mine on amazon for 2.99 however i offer it free to prime members as a kindle download and i also run the specials giving it away for free as often as they will let me.

i havn't really made too much of a marketing push to sell my book and just recently laoded it up to the kdp kindle marketplace on amazon. i think glendon cameron really led the pack in terms of books nad youtube vids and stuff but i feel like i was one of the first people out there with an ebook as my ebook was out before any of the tv shows came on.

does someone have to buy a book? absolutely not, someone could browse this forum for a half hour and be prepared to go to their first auction but some people like all the info to be consolidated and neatly packaged for them and find value in paying for that.

Yeah, I agree. The book we have been working on should be complete in the next few weeks and then I'll begin marketing it. It would be great if I could find a publisher but I'm not holding my breath mainly because of the amount of competition and the fact that interest in storage auctions is slowing. Of course it will be available in several digital formats, but I will also be contracting with a company that prints and ships single copies of books for customers that prefer something tangible.

This isn't a get rich quick book but a practical guide to making a living in the storage auction business. There will be a ton of content and I think that it touches on everything that is important for a storage auction buyer to know. Hopefully, people will benefit from a thorough book that doesn't sugar coat the storage auction business.

TC, look forward to your book comming out, always enjoyed your blog and thought it was quality content so would love to give the book a read. If you wanna send over a copy pm me and I'd be happy to give it a read and a review and a plug on FreeStorageAuctionLists. Also, if your looking for affiliates to sell the book for you I'd be interested in doing that as well. I imagnie you already know this but would recommend commission junction or clickbank.

Is anyone familiar with the laws relating to plagiarism? Here is my question.

If Glendon Cameron can publish a book called "Storage Auctions 101 The Beginners Guide To Storage Auction Profits" a year and a half after I publish "Storage Auctions 101 - A beginner's guide to storage unit auctions," Does that mean I can publish a book using one of his titles and just change a word or two? Not that I would want to or anything.

Here's the title of Glendon's next book. "Making Money A-Z by plagiarising other book titles" It has a nice ring to it.

Have you read his?   Can you get him on copyright?

No, I haven't read his book. I'm not sure about the copyright infringement laws but common sense would say yes.

The title of my old ebook is Storage Auctions 101 - A beginner's guide to storage unit auctions.

The title of his book is Storage Auctions 101 - The beginners guide to storage auction profits.

Even though a few words are different in the subtitle, he totally ripped off my title.

That would be like me writing a book and calling it "Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Underpants" or "Star Wars Revenge of the Jet Eye."

My take on it would be the title similarity would pass.

How many titles can you come up with for a certian subject.  Look at movies.....or text books.....

I think it would be the content that mattered.

Think about it.

Movies....Total Recall (1990)....Total Recall (2012)  Same title, basic theme but variations.  In that case they probably bought the rights and tuned it up for the present.

In the case of the written word however it certainly would be (IMO) a matter of the bulk of the content being lifted from the original author's work. As Alias said...how many variations can you have of French 101, or Basics of Biology, or True Love or Dangerous Minds ?

Yeah, I see your point. It's not like it really matters. The only down side is that I can't use my title because people would assume it was Glendon's book.

If you wanted to write a cookbook specializing in Chinese food, does that mean no where in the title could you use the words "cook chinese food" just because their are already 10,000+ Chinese cookbooks out there?

I think your arguement would be rational if the title of your book was "How to make money using Quantum Physics and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Storage Auctions" and then Glendon or someone else wrote a book titled "How Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Quantum Physics made me millions in storage auctions!"

Your book title is very simple, common, and easily reproduced without anyone needing to "steal" it from you.

I did a little home work on this and you're absolutely right. The content is what really counts in plagiarism cases.

Since I haven't read his book, I wouldn't know if any of the content was taken from my book. I guess all I would have to do is look for paragraphs that had correct punctuation, spelling and grammar. :D

I dont know the anaswer to your questiona bout whether he can come up with a book with a similar title to yours but something interseting, anyone who writes a book about anything "for dummies" winds up getting sued by the people who put out the "for dummies" series. even if you are writing about a topic they havn't covered they have "for dummies" trademarked. Im a member of some webmaster and affiliate marketing forums and hear about this happening all the time.

as for similar content there's programs you can load your content into and it will tell you if someone else is using your content, thats if its on the internet so wont necessarily work on something written in print if its not on the net.

prety much everything on the interenet is copied though. many bloggers and writers use article spinning software that basically will take an article change words and whamo there's a new article

I've had many articles copied and spun. Even had some legitimate companies (small storage facility chain, other storage auctions websites, etc.) post my articles on their website without altering them and without my permission. I guess imitation in the sincerest form of flattery.

It must be pretty easy to get away with.  There was this guy in my life (not in that way, people!) that I forced to deal with.   He was a get rich quick type.  Always a new plan, most failed.

He wrote some books.   I think to boost his own ego or to make himself look important in his other dealings...

Anyway,  to read these are like reading cliff notes of industry leaders books.   He basically took a 200 page book and paraphrased it into 100 page book.    And where he couldn't paraphrase he says "from so-n-so....."   And copies&pastes a whole section.

I laughed when he said he got published.   Yeah, man.  Paying lulu.com to set up a publishing company for you and paying for the publishing fees and print cost yourself doesn't really count as "getting published"

Kinda like saying you "got hired" to sell Amway.

Sure, there are a LOT of books on Amazon (and elsewhere) about the storage auction business. But I also know this: They're not selling a lot of copies! Check the "Amazon Rank" for any of those books... most are in the range of 300,000-500,000... which is TERRIBLE as far as the number of sales per month. These authors will be lucky to sell 1-2 copies per month. Anything with a sales rank above 100,000 isn't selling many at all. (Amazon rankings go from low to high...)

Not sure what that means, really. A lot of people are interested in the storage auction business... I've written about it myself... but I guess not a lot of people want to read about it. Maybe they're just learning it "on the job"....

I appreciate the input Bill, that's interesting to know. Maybe since people see it on TV they think they already know how to do it.

Your best market place is of course Amazon and they have what's called "CreateSpace" - createspace.com/

Great way to get yourself out there.

A good way to market an ebook is to keep the price within .99-$2.99, you achieve 75% of the profits I think. How you market the book from the webinars I've attended on Traffic Travis is to set up a day where you offer your book for FREE,

however,

you need to get 100 people you know to download and review that book within that 1-2 days your book is for free. What this does is catapult the book up to the top of its search on that topic because of the "surge" of feedback you received. Cost $100 to get an isbn number if you do it yourself, btw, for those interested, but you don't need an isbn to sell e-books.

With Kindle being the hottest e-reader on the market, sales for e-books are shooting through the roof. So I would seriously consider self-publishing on the e-book than allowing a publishing house to take of your profits.

As far as titles are concerned, I do not believe they are copyright protected. However, I would go with:

Beginner's Guide to Storage Auctions

Your current title: Storage Auctions 101: Beginner's Guide to Storage Auctions is slightly redundant. With titles keep it simple and to the point.

My 3 cents on that (everyone says 2 cents, so I bid you a penny up).

Just take a page out of L.Ron Hubbards play book and buy up all the books yourself so it hits #1.  :)

Here's a quote from an article about titles:

Titles are not protected by U.S. copyright laws (which is why so many books have the same titles). To qualify for copyright protection, a work needs to possess “a significant amount of original expression”—and while “a significant amount of original expression” isn’t fully defined by hard-and-fast rules, the courts have ruled that expressions as short as book titles do not qualify.
