The Insides (TV)

The Insides (TV)

With the recent topic of what to do with old TVs, and myself just buying a locker with two in it; pictured here: http://storageauctionforums.com/index.php?topic=1672.30

So here are a few photos of me taking it apart, and the goodies within.

The TV with the case off, it was pretty interesting to take apart, had never seen the inside of this type of TV.

One of three lights, spools of copper wrapped around.

What a pretty sight!

A portion of the copper that was pulled.

I also found some alluminum pieces, and quite a bit of heavy scrap metal. In some ways it was time consuming, but not if you dont have anything better to do. If anyone is interested, I'll post some pictures later of the smaller TVs insides.

It's not bad money when like you say "not anything better to do". I tear down all non working elecrtonics and salvage as much as possible and toss the rest my garbage the city picks up. I like hanging in the garage with TV on tinkering anyway. Those chunks of copper wire are pretty.

Here's a double sided mirror that was pulled from the big TV, $10 all day long.

This is the inside of the small TV, its one of the old old models and was heavy as hell.

Copper that was pulled halfway through, if you look closely on the right, the copper is encased in black glass. Not really sure how to go about getting it out, any ideas? The most i've had the chance to do so far is beat it with a hammer.

I usually always scrap the old TV's like that. I can't sell them, and the auction houses have stopped taking them as well. I can usually scrap one out in a few minutes (I'm a part time scrapper). the copper can be kept intact and be sold for electric motor price. Also, you can cut all the wire out and get insulated copper price for it.

Ya - I went from 0 TVs to 3 now after last auction.  They all power up so testing them out.  The largest works but the top of the picture is elongated so everyone looks like a egg head.  If can't fix that with the menu and such it goes into scrap.  Since TVs cost me $10 to recycle and microwaves $5 I scrap everything I can from them to re-coup some money.

Scrap yards  Average $ 25+ to dump one here in mass.  $35 +  for large or console tv's
My town will pick them with a pre pay once a month
     The Commonwealth of Massachusetts DEP
regulations prohibit the disposal of computer
monitors and televisions in the rubbish, due to the
lead content in the cathode ray tubes.
The Town of Natick will collect and recycle
these items. Computers and televisions are
$25.00 each and are collected as bulky waste.
Please call the Sanitation Division for information.
These items will not be accepted at the Recycling
Center.

As Dave would say "Yuuuuuup".  I don't take as big of a loss as some people do but I HATE tvs.  Before they opened the "recycle center" the county would do a electronics recycle drive twice a year.  You could take them TVs, monitors, etc. for free and they would load it all on a big semi.  Since they opened the center that went away.  Local trash dump also closed so everything goes to a collection center now if you don't use a trash service.  So I strip every last item I can from a TV that I can either use or make a few cents or such from.  Even down to the screws.

PS - I hate that copper prices have started to fall.  Just as I'm getting a good supply again.

I normally don't bid on units w/ TVs unless it's really a unit I like.  However, I've found a few small TVs up under stuff when I couldn't see the TV.  I don't calculate my "time" in cost since I do this as a hobby.  If I'm not digging in a unit I'd prob be playing video games.  So at least I can make some cash back for time spent.
