These are the 3 things I refuse to pay retail for and am waiting to find at a storage auction.

1. A medium size Snap On tool box.
2. A dual axle enclosed trailer.
3. A nice stainless range/oven.

Have you checked CL instead for these items?

Oh, I'm sure I could get all of them on Craigslist, but not for free after selling other items in the unit.

I say this all the time but it never seems to sink in...it's never "FREE". If you can sell it for $40 but instead choose to keep it, then it cost you $40.

Not really, since the value of the item is still $40, there is no loss.

Let's say you buy two foreclosures with a market value of $200K for $100K. Then, you resell one of the homes for $100K and recover all of your money. If you keep the other home for yourself, you've gained an asset worth $100K and it didn't cost you a penny. It's irrelevant whether you resell the asset, the gain still occurred.

Allow me to simplify it even further. Let say I gave you a gold coin and you chose to keep it. Just because you didn't convert it to cash, does that mean you didn't get the coin for free?

Yes really, because you have the item instead of the cash in hand. Think of it this way...you need a widget and it costs $10. If you go buy one you don't have the $10 in your pocket but you have the widget. Now instead of buying one you find one in a storage unit you bought. You can sell it for $10 or keep it because you need it. You decide to keep it and not sell it. So now you don't have the $10 in your pocket but you have the widget. No difference!

In your house example you're still out the 2nd 100K because you didn't sell the house. If you sold both you would have 200K and you don't.

In your coin example you gave me the coin, I didn't have to lay out any cash to get it. Bad example. We were talking about buying and holding on to something instead of selling it.

Just like the last 5 times we've had this conversation, we'll just agree to disagree.   :victory:
