Title: [update: check out what I scored] Help me out with this CL ad?
Post by: Shmoopy on January 09, 2012, 11:40:56 PM
I know this isn't the CL forum, but this is a newbie in need of help  :-\
Okay check this ad out: http://raleigh.craigslist.org/gms/2778257386.html

I've set up an appointment to go by during the week and I'm pretty sure I know what I want to get. So far I know I'm grabbing:

All the board games
Probably most/all of the PC games (depends on age)
All the shot glasses (I'm hoping for collectible ones, but you know, they're 3 for $1. Can't really go wrong)
All the appliances (I'm assuming they're working. If not, I won't touch them)
All the bedding items (To package with any mattresses I find in auctions so I can resell at a higher price. They're $1 each. Again, can't really go wrong.)
The 19" TV
The neon clock (It's $10 bucks. NEON. $10!!! I'm super excited. might keep it if it's cool enough  :P)
the BB's (for personal backyard use with friends)

What I really need help with are the outdoor tools. They seem too good to be true. I mean $10 each for things that cost hundreds of dollars. I dunno... Even if they don't work, I was wondering if they'd have any scrap or parts value. Most of these prices seem too good to be true, but with the storage auction prices as high as they are, I don't know if I can pass this up.

You'll need to use your best judgement when your actually looking at and touching these pieces. Sometimes, people need to clear space quickly and we can seek something mutually beneficial. In this case, cheap re-sales goods.

One thing I wanted to mention. My wife and I recently went to a freebie blowout we found on CL. The best pieces were gone by the time we got there, but there was still plenty to be had, including two Quaker Oats bowls that sell for about $8-12 each on Ebay. Don't overlook the mugs/bowls/glasses. Focus on subject matter and use your best judgement. At those prices, take all the small wins you can get!

Wish I could join ya. Seems to be some good stuff to be had. $10 neon... I'm jealous.  ;)

If they start up and run pick them up. We picked up a chainsaw for $15 at a yard sale and sold in ours for $35.
Oh have to have the neon.  ;)

Oooo~could you pick up the patio table and chair set for me? 8)
$40?  I can't keep those things in stock!  Of course in Southern AZ we're always on the patio!

Sounds like a winner and have fun!!  Reminds me since locker prices are soaring, perhaps I should rethink my pickin'.

What we are doing. Found some good deals on CL. We also have a local Classified that is pretty good also.

Wished I had found an ad like that here.  ;)

If the lawn mower and stuff don't run it's not worth $10 in scrap.  Shred price currently for me is $0.125 cents a lb.  The TV is ok - is pretty much the scrap value for it (2.77 for #2 copper).

The swimming pool and pump if alum and not the Walmart plastic type could be worth the $50.  Would have to do some research on that.  All depends on the make/model and actual size.

Comic book collection the guy is nuts.  Not going to happen unless he has some rare slabbed comics in it.  Most people attach more value to collections that they have worked on then what they are worth.

Check out the "household / kitchen" items like forks.  Lady at my local flea can't keep forks in stock.  Common ones are $.25 each - the fancy ones that are part of sets go for $.50 - $1 each.

Depending on what is left over by time you get there don't be afraid to make him a "lot" offer to take everything for one price.

Lately, we've only been picking. Trying to pick our way to a bigger bankroll and get to the point where we can handle the volume of storage units.

Figure we'll do this for now and by the time we're ready for storage auctions, we'll be better prepared and, hopefully, the crowds will settle down a bit.

Well all the lawn care tolls have been sold, but they still have everything else, so I'm really excited!
Thanks for all your advice, especially about the patio stuff. I would have passed it over, but now I'm pretty keen on it.
Also I wouldn't have even thought of picking up any of the dishware. You guys are great! I love this forum!

Hold on Shmoopy~I can't keep them in stock, but remember......I live in Southern Arizona where every other person has a pool and use them 9 outta 12 months.  And condition makes all the difference in the world.  I'm sure you'll shop wisely~

Ohhhh... good point. If it's in really good condition, I'll grab it. Otherwise I think I'll stay away...

Like lockers at the auction - you have to learn what your market is.  I think you said matresses sell in your area.  Here, we can't give them away (some of the other regulars have tried).  Cloths don't move well for me yet, but others have great luck with them.

You can "pick" all you want and have great prices.  But, if you can't sell anything your wasting money.

Yea I heard it from a group of regulars. That auction was kind of out of my way, though so I'm not sure if they came from the other direction or what, but I'm gonna be careful with mattresses... Anyway, I'm assuming I'm going to be selling most of this stuff on ebay and trying to get rid of the bulk smalls at some kind of thrift store or just until i get enough inventory to profitably set up shop at the flea.

So I ended spending 45 bucks on this sale. I thought I got a realllly good score here. Here's what I got:

-Captain Morgan neon clock ($50 maximum on ebay)
-around 15 PC games (less than 5 years old)
-6 or 7 complete board games in good condition
-Coffee maker
-coffee grinder
-sandwich maker
-blender
-juicer
-4 or 5 collectible shot glasses and 3 regular tall ones

I haven't cleaned out or tested any of the appliances, but the guy said they worked, and at just a dollar or two each, I couldn't pass it up. After a disappointing first auction and an even worse yard sale day last weekend it's nice to grab a decent deal.

You should certainly make some money. I'm sure as you try to figure what you can sell this stuff for, you're realizing that this is no way to get rich quick, but with some effort, can be a way to make some money.

Keep at it and let us know how things go on the sell-side.

Other then the shot glasses and board games I would of picked all of that stuff up.  Maybe the glasses - it all depends on what they were and if I thought could re-sale them.  The board games for me would just be a donation item.

Good work there.  I'm normally late to the party when find deals like that.
