elusive 1st unit
« on: June 26, 2011, 08:56:13 AM »
I was wondering how long it took some of you to score your first unit? Went to another auction yesterday ( 5th total) and have yet to get one. I have bid on a couple low end units that went for more than they were worth, and lost out yesterday on a nice unit that I bid every dollar in my pocket and lost by 5 bucks. I'm still pissed, but the rush of getting that close was very cool. It should be better when I actually win. Thanks for all of you that post, I really enjoy your perspectives.

2nd time out is when I got my first unit. First day out I bidded but overall did not get a lkr. Went more than I figured it was worth.

Just be patient and stick with your game plan.It will happen.Don't over pay just because you want a unit.

I waited three months before winning a unit. I spent a lot of time just watching the crowds, figuring out who were the regulars and who were the newbies like me, trying to figure out if there are "whales" in my area that keep everyone else out, and waiting for the bidding madness to come down. I got into this game at the end of last year, and if you think the bidding is high now you should have seen it then!

I got really lucky at the first few auctions I attended. At my fist auction, this lady and I were the only two people who showed up. I didn't know how rare that was at the time. They raised the door on the first unit and the lady said she wasn't interested so I bought it for next to nothing. They raised the door to the second unit and the lady walked away. I saw some camping equipment, fishing poles and a large socket set. I told the facility manager that I would buy the unit if I knew that the socket set was there and she let me enter the unit to open the case. It was there, so I bought that unit as well. The third unit I bought got me hooked, it contained a classic guitar, a antique pistol, a stamp and coin collection, a few thousand dollars worth of common items and about $2500 in gold jewelry and silver coins.

I've seen a fair number of new people buy a lkr at an inflated price JUST to get one and at least some of them later reported they were disappointed. It might be a hard call, but bidding on the safe side is probably the best bet.

The enthusiasm to get one is great and if the lkr you get works out it's even better, but enthusiasm has a way of diminishing if the lkr turns out less than expected.

I think it's safe to say there will always be MORE lkrs to buy, so probably no need to rush in.

I got my first one just over 7.5 years ago at $250 for a 10 x 10. At that time people told me I had paid too much; it turned out good, but my nostalgia about it now is that I didn't know how good it would look all these years later with the prices they way they are now in some parts of the country.

I got 3 units my first time out. But you have to keep in mind this was 7 years ago, in a small town, and there were about 4 people there. Now it seems a lot different.

I have a great chance in 2 days, 14 facility chain all day auction with 50+ units total. Hope the next post is about a winner!

If it is highly advertise, and with that long of a chain (caravan) going on I imagine it is. There will be alot of people. Some you will see skip some, and some you will see drop out after awhile, and others you will see come in later down the line.

At my second auction, that's when I started bidding and hence, gaining confidence that I belong in this business. On my first auction, I was just a Lookey Loo yet left the auction feeling that I coulda, shoulda have bid on something that caught my eye.

Got my first unit cheap ($11). Can't wait for the next unit!
