Should I buy just to buy?

Should I buy just to buy?
« on: September 10, 2011, 01:46:07 PM »
So I have attended five auctions...i've bid on four units. I have yet to win one. All together I have seen about 25 or so lockers, and I only bid on one's I like. I have seed money, but refuse to go past my limit...$500 until I get more experience. I only am bidding on the units I see and like, and think I can turn a profit. There are units that go for much less. The four I lost I was out bid on all of them. So my question is should I buy one, even if I don't like it or see value? Or should I hold off and think the right one will come...???
I really wanna get my feet wet!

Really depends. There's always risk involved in these lockers.  If you only bid on what is actually visible, you're going to have people outbid you on them, because they see the same things usually.  There is a touch of blind bidding that has to be done, based on what you can see.  Obviously you don't see $500.00 worth of stuff and bid $2,000.  But you are going to take risks in this.
It's the nature of the beast.  One thing you're doing right:  You're not buying just for the sake of it.  If your seed money is all you can spare, and you can't waste it, then don't piss it away just to buy a unit.
Watch the auctions, see what is going on, but remember that these things are like playing baseball.  A base hit is what you're after, not the 'home run'.
Take your time on it.  Some of the more experienced storage warriors will be in with their advice.  I'm new myself. But, while I'll take some risk with units, I am not interested in throwing all my money down a hole and hope I find Al Capone's lost money.

The best thing to do (for me) is set a max on speculation.  In my area the prices are not too high for most lockers.  So if I see a trashy or junky unit that doesn't have a matress / furniture and it goes for less then $50 I'll try and get it.  For everything else I only bid what I can see and think I can sale at plus the $50 speculation.  So if I see $100 worth of stuff to sale I'll go $150 max depending on how many "unknown" boxes and such there are.

Every one of us has a different style.  Don't just buy a locker in frustration as you are just asking to lose.  Then you may not have that money for a locker you really like at the next unit, facility, or auction.

It's one thing to get your feet wet, and another to walk out in that water until SUDDENLY you drop off when stepping off a 3 foot bank!  There are always more auctions around the corner. Why not try to buy as wisely as you can for your first one.

Just because you lost to someone else on those first 4 lkrs doesn't mean they won. They could have lost too in the return-on-investment part of the deal.

There are a bunch of auctions coming up in the next few weeks, so, hopefully I'll get one. I think I just have to trust my instincts more. I won't get anywhere by sitting on the side lines, but I think I just have to be smart about it.

Trust your gut more.  If your new to auctions, and specially storage auctions you may be second guessing yourself alot.  Did I really see XXX amount of money in there?  Will it sell rapid enough to keep going?

I'm not new to auctions but only been doing storage auctions for a little over a month now.  I've seen at least 50+ lockers, bid on 4, and never won anything.  It wasn't till the last caravan auction that I actually won 2 lockers.  I won those mostly due to my wife's prompting that she wanted various items in them.  So while I'm not really making real money (not selling most of the stuff) I'm still ahead.

Be patient, it will come.  Knowledge is your best weapon in this game, followed by luck.

Try out sealed bids too. Many times due to the lack of competitive bidding these lockers will go for less then what your seeing from competitive bids. A for heaven sakes just avoid Saturday auctions.

Went to another one Saturday, nothing too exciting and I don't have any remorse about not buying and not winning a bid. I bid on two. I think I've been to enough to know what I'm looking for, going with my gut and sticking to my limits. There are two this weekend and a caravan in a big city I live about 45 minutes from later this month. In the mean time I checked out my local flea market scene. I guess I'll buy when the time is right:) Also, out of the six I've attended I see about four of the same people, the rest are always different...I guess it's kinda cool that the other people who do this all the time are starting to talk to me and say hi.
