Got this 10 x 20 today at a local auction....minimum gas costs and paid $300.

Here's a link to the lookey loos for May, 2011 that describes the auction in general (crowd and prices).

See reply #21:

This thread I'll let the pictures do the talking....eating up bandwidth with this, but the server should stand the load!

I like the first two pics the best....haven't looked the items up yet, but they're made in England.

The Invacare above sells used in the $200 range.

The Invacare above used for generating air into bottles sells for $995 in refurbished form; $3500 new.

Ebay shows these coolers in the $85 and up range. That's for new ones. Still, makes me want to try them used on eBay instead of getting $35 each at the flea ! UPDATE: Target has these on sale for $28!

Thanks to Mr. A for suggesting this as possible topic and one I don't think we have explored in the threads.

This might show us how many of our roughly 1,650 members (as of May 19, 2011) are here because of the TV shows and how many were doing it before that.

In addition to checking the appropriate box for voting, you can post a note with further explanation. I realize the choices provided may not offer all possible ways that people came to be auction buyers.

You have to be a registered member to vote and you have to be logged-in in order to vote.

Also, you have to be logged in to see the votes cast and the percentage for each category...otherwise you
will just see the category title with no results to the right.

edit: added last lines shown above.

Haven't seen this show myself...it's on TruTV which my carrier doesn't provide.

Anyway, seems to have been on a while. Here's a review:

Have we explored every nook and crannie of the Storage Auction business?

With about 700 topics, 4500 posts we have explored a lot about the business, from what form the auctions take, how they are conducted, who is buying, what they are buying, what they are selling, ways they are selling it, what kinds of
"great" finds we get, what kind of "rotten" finds we get, what is spam, trolling, etc.

The list goes on (but what I listed just above represents a lot of the topics IMO).

So, is there ANYTHING we haven't explored? If so, list it here or start a new thread about some new subject.

Here's the link to a 3 frame color cartoon strip which pits a dog against Storage Wars.

If you are a dog lover AND a Storage Wars fan this is doubly funny!  ;D

There is also a social comment on pawn shops on this date, May 9, 2011.

You can use the arrow back and forward just above the cartoon strip to look at other days.

These links will OPEN A NEW TAB in your browser.

In doing some reading about spamming on forums, I came across these definitions of a troll and flaming.

Thought they might do some good here as THE DUMP is the appropriate place for this kind of activity.

Troll
Main article: Troll (Internet)

Forum trolls are users that repeatedly and deliberately breach the netiquette of an established online community, posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages to bait or excite users into responding or to test the forum rules and policies, and with that the patience of the forum staff. Their provocative behavior may potentially start flame wars (see below) or other disturbances. Responding to a troll's provocations is commonly known as 'feeding the troll' and is generally discouraged, as it can encourage their disruptive behavior.

Flame wars
Main article: Flaming (Internet)

When a thread—or in some cases an entire forum—becomes unstable the result is usually uncontrolled spam in the form of one-line complaints, image macros or abuse of the report system. When the discussion becomes heated and sides do nothing more than complain and not accept each other's differences in point of view, the discussion degenerates into what is called a flame war. To flame someone means to go off-topic and attack the person rather than their opinion.

Edit: adding definition of sock puppet.
Sock puppet

Main article: Sockpuppet (Internet)

The term sock puppet refers to someone who is simultaneously registered under different pseudonyms on a particular message board or forum. The analogy of a sock puppet is of a puppeteer holding up both hands and supplying dialogue to both puppets simultaneously. A sock puppet will create multiple accounts over a period of time, using each user to debate or agree with each other on a forum. Sock puppets are usually found when an IP check is done on the accounts in forums.

Spam
Spam posts may contain anything from a single link, to dozens of links. Text content is minimal, usually innocuous and unrelated to the forum's topic, or in a very old thread that is revived by the spammer solely for the purpose of spamming links. Some text is included to prevent the post being caught by automated spam filters that prevent posts which consist solely of external links from being submitted. Full banner advertisements have also been reported

I went to an auction today (Monday, May 9, 2011)  held by John Cardoza.

Cardoza is seen (very briefly) in the opening credits to Auction Hunters. He is the one who says "Sold em out" if you want to see him.

Anyway, he said today at the auction that the episode in which he sells to Allen and Ton will be on in about a month..that would put it maybe mid June.

I asked him if he could say anything about the show and he indicated he could say a little. What he DID say was that there was no way of knowing what might have happened to the contents of the lkr once he had sold it. If I read that properly, sounds like the producers could SALT the contents.

Cardoza commented about the disclaimer at the beginning of the show "their best finds", but I have to tell you if they did find a quadzilla and a hovercraft in years past, putting them BOTH in one facility that had 4 lkrs for sale wasn't a good strategy. That was the episode that sent them to the dark side as far as I was concerned.

Cardoza also commented that Ton wasn't happy when Cardoza ask (or told) him to put out his cigarette. When Ton responded "I'm the star of the show!" Cardoza responded, "It's my auction."

Cardoza said the auction took place in Ontario, CA (down south) but might be promoted as being in Rancho Cucomonga (sp). I guess Rancho C. sounds better.

The Lounge / Spammers get DUMPED by the forum-load !
« on: May 09, 2011, 07:58:52 AM »
On Sunday, March 8, 2011 there were about 1,940 members at this forum.

Today, Monday, March 9, 2011 that number is DOWN to about 1,640.

Quite a drop and it looks like Drew did quite a house cleaning on "members" whose
only goal was to spam in one way or another.

A look at the member's list shows those with websites, and that's one way to spot
these no-good-niks.

Thanks Drew ! Vigilance will pay off.

Got a 10 x 15 today for $300 and I think it will turn out OK.

The Lounge / How to make money off Bin Laden death !
« on: May 02, 2011, 11:01:11 AM »
You may think this is a joke, but SOME entrepreneurs are going to make money off this.

I'm not going to pursue any of these ideas, so help yourself if you are so inclined, and feel free to add
ideas (serious or jokes).

1. Tee Shirts with various slogans
2. Any other product that can be silk-screened (mugs, hats, hankerchieves, etc)
3. Consipracy theory websites (saying death is a fake).....adsense links and item sales will generate income.

You can supply more.

One word of advice though (IMHO) if you're going to do this, do it today, Monday, 5/2/2011, because a week later and you will be #270 to try it and you will be stuck with a lot of tee shirts.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Lookey Loos Part 5.....May, 2011
« on: May 01, 2011, 08:46:50 AM »
We continue our watch on crowds and prices always hoping for a decline in both.

I went to a couple of auctions in late April, and OVERALL the trend was downward in crowd size,
but IN MY AREA prices were still relatively high with even regular buyers kicking in some bucks just
to maintain some NEW inventory.

Hopefully as time passes the prices will go down a bit too. It's centainly true that it's not what you
sell for, it's what you pay that makes the difference.

RFR asked this question in another thread, so thought I would address it in a new thread where it
wouldn't detract from original thread subject.

Before December, 2010 I would have said "no". Now I'm thinking they do cover (and exceed) the fees owed to them.
With 10 x 10 lkrs (which might rent for $80 a month) and with 2 to 3 months of back fees owed (plus other charges) the total they owe MIGHT be $300 to $350 (tops).

I see a lot of 10x10s going in the $500 to $600 range here in California, and that's for an average lkr. A "star" will bring more than that.

The funny thing is that the "excess" is supposed to go back to the lkr owner. So If they owed $400 and it sells for $800, they get $400 "profit". That's if they can be found. Many can't and the money goes into a county fund here in CA.

I use the 400/800 example because a couple of years ago I paid for a great looking tool lkr..yep..$800. The mgr told me before I left the premises that the guy owed $400.

A week or so later the prop mgr called me and gave me the guy's number. He wanted to buy something back. When I called him, I told him that item had already been sold. He was quite cocky and mentioned the $400 he reaped and said "Good luck selling the tools. You already know my name has been etched in all of them." I had sold some of them already so I informed him, "That didn't seem to matter to the people who bought the Macs and Snap-Ons. Those wrenches work no matter whose name is on them." He just hung up. Oh well, again, pay your bills.
