Garage Sales / Re: Negotiating a price at a garage sale
« on: June 15, 2013, 08:44:04 AM »
As a person who runs an 'everyday' yard sale, you expect to haggle. Combating this can be as simple as pricing your items a few dollars higher than what you'd really take. Also not pricing your items with stickers keeps you flexible. I have different prices depending on who the person is, if its a regular who's spent hundreds of dollars over the course of time, they're going to get a better price than a new face.

Good job. I am always a little nervous about investing money in items I have no experience in selling, but that is the only way to learn.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #6...June, 2013

I went to an auction yesterday in a smallish town about an hour away. 10 or so bidders for 6 rooms. I walked away with 4 for the grand total of $155.

Unit 1 - $10. Auctioneer had said the guy had died, mostly crappy stuff with a couple of bags of DVDs.
Unit 2 - $100. Laptops showing, a lot of nice woman's clothes/shoes/purses household items.
Unit 3 - $40. Nice Mattress Set, few boxes of misc
Unit 4 - $5. Nice desk, tub of clothes.

Even though I walked away with the most, I'm not so sure I walked away with the best.

eBay / Re: eBay Double / Triple your money tip

That was surprising. Now if everyone on this forum floods ebay with them, we can take the market back from SteveChesi!

Ive been to some backwoods country auctions where they've had a bidder over the phone, or even another instance where the auctioneer claimed they let someone look the units over the day before and start with a 'minimum bid' that this no show stranger provided.

The whole thing is, at least in my state, there is no one policing these facilities to make sure stuff is being sold the right way at auction. I have a few places myself where I just go out and make the guy an offer on his units, with no kind of auction process at all. Facility owners can pretty much do whatever they want around here once a unit falls into debt.

I have some friends who do it. Their antique mall is open 7 days a week, but you pretty much stock it with stuff and the mall takes care of the cashing out part. IE you never have to be there to sell, which seems pretty good. Though they have complained of people 'price swapping' items, or just straight stealing it. There's no security if your not there to watch your own stuff, collect the cash etc.

Wow. Now that was worth signing up to post. Keep us updated on what that sells for.

After no signs of other bidders the first week of the units being up, they have took off like hot cakes. Most of them ended in the 4-5 hundred range. Although I did notice the facility itself put the link to their units on auctionzip.

I'm surprised this thread hasn't been deleted yet, but maybe it isn't personal enough. Let the good times roll.

There's something (or maybe its nothing?) to be said about those old Avon bottles. I really thought I had something when I found a box of them in a unit a few months back. After research, I am struggling to get a dollar out of them at the yard sale.

There are no piece by piece auctions that I'm aware of anywhere close to me. Nice pics, I would like to go to one. Would be interesting to see everything in a unit without having to buy it all!

I'm currently bidding on some units in my area as well. So far with 8 days left there has only been one other bidder, but we've battled on all of them (10 units). The units look legit and are well covered in the photos. Only downside for me is that all of the facilities that list with this website charge a cleaning deposit, which is ridiculous if you plan on buying multiple units.

Wow. I remember the days when I felt the need to write about every unit/auction. Everything will work out, either you become a "pro" or you flame out.
