Yeah I figured that is always a problem.
If I do it, I would tell people to write on the tag what the item is, so no price swapping can happen.
And without a tag = No Sale.... pretty much the rule at thriftstores etc around here anyway.

Always amazes me that people use the self defense argument on why they need guns.

Other countries people don't get shot all day long even though they don't have guns... and guess what, YES criminals there DO have guns too. LOL...

Don't get your panties all in a bunch. You can keep your 2nd Amendment rights (WHATEVER they truely are). But who needs one or FOUR AR15s for self defense???

Reality check, IF the government comes after you OR a foreign country invades your measly AR15 will not save your butt from nothing. If anything you just made yourself a big fat target. LOL

Yeah... reminded me of the first (and so far only) time I found an Urn in a shipping box...\

Creeped me out to see something like 'Crematorioum' on the return address.
Turned out to be a pet's ashes, still creepy.

Went back to the tenant and according to the storage manager the lady was really grateful for that.
This was one of the rare cases were the tenant really wanted ALL their personal stuff back.

Wouldn't have been so bad, if it would not have been mixed in alll the way throughout the unit's contents.

For sure there are various reasons for a slow turnout.
This was my 4th sale here.

First 2 I had 20+ show up and made about 80 each time.

3rd was a nightmare, 3 people and $13, BUT that weekend were a lot of festivals in the area.

Today I had prob. 8-10 people show up, but 2 good sales. One with $50+ and one with $80 plus.
The $80 was a decent dresser and a bunch of tools, the guy could not believe my prices. In his broken english (Mexican... he said: Are you sure? several times). I know I blew those out, but they weren;t like Craftsman stuff and I made him happy, he will be back and tells all his buddies. I got run down the mill hand tools ALL THE TIME.

I advertise on Craigslist.
Plus the usual signs in the neighborhood.

My SALE is at my warehouse. Somewhat remote industrial area, so I don't get much of the regular yardsale crowds coming through which is part of the problem, actually the biggest problem really.

It ended up OK for me. I am sure a lot will laugh but I made a little over $150 which is ok as I did not waste any time. I was working at the WH anyway so the sales are just gravy. In my 'business plan' calculation I only plan on making $400 a month this way, so I am ok with today's haul.

I stress to everybody that I get more stuff all the time, so don't assume next time you see my signs it's the same stuff.

On CL I take pics of the better stuff, stress what I got a lot of etc.

I understand that I can not count on the regular flow of people finding me, but have to build a following, which is ok.

I also need more signs maybe a little further away at major intersections.

Had a distant friend show up today and turns out her and her BF always wanted to open a thrift/resale/consignment kinda store....
Never met him, but set up a follow up chat and talk business.
She only works PT in a dead end job at a dead end company and would LOVE to get out and do her own thing.

Could be the break I was looking for.
Him and Me running the auction circuit and bring in the goods, they both have ebay/online experience and then we can both use the store to move the smalls and furniture and what nots.

At 550 for 1.5K of space though...thats awesome.

Yup.... but I am sitting here for 1 1/4 hour now after setting up my yardsale which is the biggest yet and not a single soul has shown up.
I am getting real close to throwing in the towel on this storage auction biz.
I love the hunt, I love the digging through and buying, and I know some good ways to sell, but at the end I am stuck with tons of decent stuff nobody wants.

I did fleamarket a few weeks ago and barely made minimum wage after getting up in the middle of the night, setting up, sitting there all day, packing up and falling into bed at 4 in the afternoon being wiped out....

UPDATE: 2 of my regulars showed up and bought $51 worth of stuff, a little happier now :)

Running a sale out of the Units I think will turn into a pain in the uknowhat fast I think.
I also doubt any facility really likes that.
The whole idea is that the place is secure and not every John, Jane and other riff raff comes in and out at their leisure.

I rent a 1,500 sq ft warehouse for $550 (super cheap even for this area), but it's in a somewhat remote industrial area and my weekend yard/parking lot sales have been sucky to say the least.

Unfortunately there is no easy answer to this. Unless you love fleamarkets (I hate them) to sell and/or have a huge yard where you can do monthly yardsales, you are really stuck like me.

Currently exploring the idea to open a coop/antique mall with a friend.
He has money, I habve th ideas and planning.

Will see how that goes.
But that way you make money on others.
Ideally you can cover all your overhead with the rent you take in from the other vendors and your own sales are profit.

Check my post I just made in 'other ways of selling'

Am considering opening an antique/collectibles mall/coop with a friend and running some numbers.

Rent of course is different everywhere, but what is the going rate for a 10x10 stall/booth?

I am thinking $150-$175.

Base rent in this area for retail in a decent part of town is at least $1 / sq ft. Often plus NNN and of course utilities etc.
Also figured into the equation would be that we would do some advertising and everybody benefits from that and any advertising the individual vendors would do.

So $2 per sq ft is really not THAT outrageous.... or is it?

The next thing is a commission on sales on top of that.
I actually want to give dealers an incentive to price stuff to sell, so I am thinking that I charge 15% commission on the first $1000 and 12% thereafter BUT credit that towards rent.

So at a $150 rent and $1000 sales he only pays commission and NO RENT....

Also want to offer display cases at $60 or so per month for seller of valuable small items. Jewelry etc
And a straight consignment area for bigger items furniture etc at NO RENT but a straight 50/50 split.

Any thoughts or ideas on this?

Several facilities on NorCal sell online now.
I have not yet won one, bid on 2 just to be horrendously outbid.

It appears to me as a buyer you simply don't have the view you would have on your own.
The site I looked at also opens everything they can access, take LITERALLY sometimes over 15 pics of the same damn HomeDepot box, making it look like there is more than it is.

Overall it just does not 'feel right' when I see their auctions.
They also post a full length video of the entire process in the auction.

My biggest concern is staging/theft of units. But I realized that is no more less or more likely than any other auction, as we are usually not around whe the lock is cut and the unit inventoried.

But the bids online seem MUCH higher as much as 2-3 times of what you would expect for the same unit in a live auction.
I contribute that to newwbees and the lazy wannabees sitting on their asses at home and it is REAL easy to get carried away when you are not in the heat of the actual auction and see how much dirty crap it is, you have to haul.

One local facility alwready went back to regular auctions due to massive problems with buyers, asking for more tinme to clean out, because they live 2 hours away. No shows and all that.

I hope this is just a fluke and will go away.

The higher prices should not be a major incentive for the facilities as any overages go to the tenant anyway.

Just my dirty 2 cents...

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Illegal to Own? Illegal to Sell?
« on: May 30, 2013, 05:09:20 PM »
Google 'First Sale Doctrine'....

Everything you legally obtained you can legally sell.

NO trademark owner, manufacturer etc can prohibit you from reselling used or even new items, as long as they were legally obtained.

Of course the limits are, if it is stolen property. If you legally buy a locker and it turns out to be stolen stuff you can't sell it.
Same applies to otherwise outlawed items, illegal guns etc.

OR if you agreed in writing to not resell something.

26
Almost everything sold as 'collectible' or 'limited edition' is usually worthless junk.

I always call it: Strictly limited to as many as we can sell.
'Collectible' stuff has been held onto.

Same with Kennedy Magazines.... EVERYBODY kept them. NOT RARE! LOL

As to these shows... yeah they are getting pretty desperate with their failing ratings to hold on for another season or 2.

27
LMAO....
There are a couple of guys with lights like this around here.
One older guy has the mother of all flash lights.
I can;t help but think it is just another version of small penis syndrome.
My $12.99 light from Harbor Freight does just fine!

Funny thing about the Alameda one is the entrance fee is larger if you come early. I think $15 if you arrive between 6:00am and 7:30am, $10 7:30am-9am and $5 9am-on. I went for the first time recently and arrived later and paid $5. Definitely nicer than a regular flea market. I was told by a friend that it is swarmed by buyers during the 6am-7:30 time and the best stuff is swooped up pretty quickly.

Those early bird 'buyers' are most likely scouts/resellers/pickers. :)

29
Alameda gets away with it, because it is anything but a fleamarket.
The most AWESOME antique faire EVER.
Beanie Babies and other modern crap is strictly VERBOTEN!
Also keep in mind the demographics. Bay Area is stinking rich. Money is NOT an issue there.

A wanna bee startup antique faire in Stockton tried that a few years ago. $5 admission.
I think they lasted 3-4 months.

First couple of months TONS of vendors. Had a real promising start, but the admission kept buyers away.

Really stupid move. Especialyl since they didn't even plan on keeping the admission, but donated it to some charity.

Flea Markets / Re: Flea Market Flip !
« on: May 28, 2013, 06:15:08 PM »
I agree on the repurposing aspect MM.

Just like on storage wars texas that ditsy chick always repuroses something and then they claim: paid $75 - asking price $275 = $200 profit.

A) asking price is not a SOLD price
B) is her time worthless? some of the projects seem elaborat and likely take 20 hours or more.

Oh well, it's all fun and games :)
