General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Scrap metal - is it worth it?

My grandad always says you have to have alot for it to add up to anything, I think prices here (NC) are like $9/100lb. My issue would be making the yard look like crap to store all this junk until its time to take a load down to the recycling company.

I've facebooked some names and had positive results, if the name is unique enough and you match it to the town, will at least tell you where they work.

273
A win-win for storage facilities and a lose-lose for us the buyer. Either people are paying their bills on time, or the ones that do go to auction bring in a higher price because of the large crowds. While we get less units to bid on and higher prices. Thats just the way it is though.

Welcome, closet person to me on here. (NC). Make sure you dont make your way down here.  ;D

I literally said oh my god.

Pretty good idea here, you never really know what someone might need/want to buy. Thanks for the new outlet!

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: My first Unit!

Update: I sold almost all the furniture, I am sitting around 400 profit right now with the PC Stuff still sitting on ebay. I also learned a valuable lesson.

I drive an S10 truck with a toolbox, so small truck and to carry alot of items I have to leave the tail gate open. I have a knack for positioning things so they wont slide without tying it down. That is until recently...I had the big executive table you see in the locker picture sold for $220 with delivery. I load it in the truck, no rope, and as soon as I pull out of my bumpy driveway the table goes all over the road. Damage was pretty bad, guy still bought it for $120. Like throwing $100 out the window. Kicking my self in the ass... but lesson learned.

The hard way.  :'(

Surprised no one has commented - I thought the show was pretty painful, didnt care for the buyers except for papa bear and the auctioneer, who I thought was pretty funny. The ones here are so dis-interested.

I thought the couple had a good idea on re-searching the names on the unit, but could be something only useful because the auctions were held in hollywood.

Update: I sold the tall metal locker for 30, six match chairs for 75... I am officially in the profit zone. In the proccess of putting the pc stuff on ebay... all said and done I may be looking at a 700+ profit.

Good idea about the mirrors, thanks.

All day auction and all I got was your classic $10 unit. Couch blocked most of the contents, crappy tables stacked on crappy tables.

So 5 decent things came from this unit; A blue rockaware baby hat for my little boy, a clean blue $30 hoodie with tag still attached, a unique kitchen table that needs some serious work, and two headboards with mirrors in them. The rest got trashed!

Pic of the unit:

Pic of the decent stuff:

I really thought the kitchen table was unique, the way the sides swing out to extend it. But heres my question; can anything be done with the particle wood headboards? I know nothing about restoring, but a friend of mine says you cant restore particle board. They each have mirrors and lights attached, but should they of gone to the dump too?

The top two are for sure routers, not really used for telephones, but for computers. The size of the jack tells it. The ones for computers are bigger, while the ones for phones are smaller.

Doing a little bit of research for you:
Top one: ADC TrueNet, brand new cost between $135 - $200
Middle one: HP ProCurve Switch 2626 Brand new $172 - $599 (depending if it is a powered model)
Bottom one: APC Smart UPS SC 450 (this is like a physical firewall to a network): Brand new $111 - $125

Not sure what the resell value is, I imagine all together you would be able to get anywhere from $300 - $450. Not bad at all, especially with all the other office furniture. Got a real good deal on your locker.

I deal with computers alot, that is where my education is at, Network Admin. Cheers :)

Thanks for the information Jross, good stuff there. One more question if you dont mind; any suggestions for the avenue to get this sold? I'm a big craigslist guy, ebay is an obvious option down the line. Think any computer shops would be interested in hardware like this?

Returns on the unit: ALOT of chairs. 4 or 5 computer chairs, including a nice executive chair. Then 7 or 8 "Dr office" type chairs (NONE of these chairs has a stain or tear on it). A few office desks, and a beat up metal file cabinet. The most interesting thing to me was this heavy conference style table. It has two big connecting pieces, and the wood itself is nice and in good shape. I paid 70 for the unit, i'm a little nervous considering I've never sold office furniture. But I see a profit here for sure.

Here is the item in question, my brother seems to think its a router of some type. Possibly used for a tele-marketing company?

Doors and sky look the same as here; so does the crowd !

Only difference is the gravel instead of concrete.  ;D

Heh, yea I noticed that too. This was one of those mom and pop storage. On Tuesday we have a company (American Flag Storage) that has 10 or so facilities across town. All day auction baby!

Went to my first weekend auction today, 50+ people. Never like that on the weekdays. 10 units up for sell, cheapest went for 50, top 650. The top unit had alot of nice clothes and over-all a really clean unit. Looked like a soldiers who got deployed and didnt keep up with the rent.
