Garage Sales / Re: First Garage Sale of the Season!
« on: April 09, 2011, 11:13:53 PM »
Well, wrapped up the first garage sale of the season today (calling for lots of rain tomorrow, in fact, it started raining 10 minutes after we closed it today!)

All in all I feel it was quite the success.  We did a little over $1400 for today between the group.  I'll probably do it again toward the end of May.  It was actually kind of fun.  People were pretty friendly and excited to be out in the nice weather and to be able to get out and buy stuff after a long crappy winter!

Garage Sales / First Garage Sale of the Season!
« on: April 08, 2011, 10:05:02 PM »
We had a nice day forecast for today, so I decided to have the first garage sale of the season.  I started getting ready for it earlier in the week.  I set it up in my shop, and I let a couple of fellow auction buyers come over and set some of their stuff up too.  I put an ad in the newspaper that will/did run Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and picked up a few more garage sale signs from Lowe's.  Also ran a large ad on CL last night.

This morning, we got there early and put a lot of larger stuff outside and had the rest of the shop set up really well.  We put out about 7 garage sale signs (only had one stolen by the end of the day!) and the people were rolling in all day.

So, at the end of the first day, we did a little over $1800 between all of us.  We still have tomorrow to go, but we probably won't do it on Sunday.  So far, so good!

It's an alright deal, however, many storage facilities offer the first month for free, with no administration fees and fine print.

Some do, but some of those also make you stay for a minimum amount of time, and if you get the first month free and have to stay for three months, it doesn't pencil out.

I just bought a bunch of oak cabinets from a business that shut down.  I ended up pulling out six trailer loads of stuff (7x14 extended height trailer) so after dumping a couple off in my shop, I rented a "dollar special" at Public Storage.  Well, the "dollar special" used to actually cost $23 for the month but then they started making you buy insurance to get the special.  So, by the time you got the special, it was actually running $31 for the month.  But this time, it came out to a little over $40!  Now, to get the dollar special, you have to buy the insurance AND their cylinder lock!  I'm hoping that once I vacate this one and keep the lock that they won't make me buy a lock every single time I do the special!

Still a good deal......where else can you get a 10x30 for 40 bucks for a month?  Just don't want to keep the stuff there longer than that......it's discounted to $191 for the next three months, and then a little over $210 after that!  Dollar specials are a great tool if you just use it for the first month!

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Stolen Property
« on: April 05, 2011, 12:17:27 AM »
I bought a unit that turned out to have a bunch of stolen clothes in it.  I would have never known, but I took them in to a consignment store I do business with to sell them, and she pointed out where they had small slits where somebody had cut the ink tags off.  She wouldn't buy them (she knows what I do and she knew I didn't do it, but she doesn't want that crap in her store) so they all ended up at Goodwill.

That's an A**HOLE thing to do!  Almost as bad as the douche bag that passed off some counterfeit 20's to the girl scouts up here selling their cookies.   Glad you caught it, that could have been an expensive "favor"!

Well, somebody needs to start some threads around here.  For as many members as we have, we should have many more new postings to read every day.  Someone out there must have something to say?! ???

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Got a cheap locker today!
« on: March 31, 2011, 10:11:07 PM »
Went to another auction today with three lockers being sold.  First two were small and owned by the same person.  Metal framing was in the first unit, and the shelf material was in the second unit, and they were bought by two different buyers.  That's planning ahead!  I hope they exchanged numbers at least or they both have something they won't be able to use!

Anyway, the last unit was calling my name, until they opened the door!  It was a 10x25, and it was STUFFED!  But, it was weird......I kept looking and looking and there was nothing of any real value that you could see.  It was just a bunch of junk stacked up.  Sure, there could have been something valuable hidden in the back somewhere, but I couldn't identify a single thing that I could make my money back on.  Also, I was next to one of the "old timer's" wife, and I pointed my flashlight into this basket about five feet in, and there was a pretty freshly dead looking rat flopped on it's back!  I told her she should buy it, her husband would be very proud of her!  She didn't buy it (the unit or my bull****!) and some lucky winner picked it up for a mere $575.00!

And, following last nights post, after the auction I went and picked up the rest of the cabinets and stuff I bought yesterday, and the guy sold me 10 more display cabinets for another $200.  So now I have to go pick those up tomorrow.  I just got my warehouse cleaned out too!  Dang it!

This never happens!  After yesterdays fiasco where I couldn't even get a unit for $1600, it was nice to go to a facility that had fewer bidders and decent prices.  I got a unit on a silent bid at a smaller facility for $50.  It had a nice Sealy Posturepedic King Size Mattress in it (I know a lot of you guys don't like them, but it's money in the bank!), a small sofa, a very nice 12 drawer light oak dresser (not particle board), some pots and pans and small kitchen appliances, a leather chair, some jumper cables and a few tools (haven't looked in the boxes much yet, just saw those laying on top) and some other misc. stuff.  Not going to be a home run (unless I find some Rhino horn in one of the bags!) but I'll make an easy few hundred.  Took 10 minutes to load it up, everything small was in a box or a bag and easy to move.

In other events, I picked up around 30 tables, split between round and square (used in a food court type setting), over 100 various chairs, six office desks, including a nice executive HON with a return, HON lateral filing cabinet, six steel cabinets, a really cool WA Husky/Miller Light beer sign (about 7' wide!), five wood and glass display cases with locking glass doors above and storage underneath (about 7' tall), a couple of other cases, two magazine racks with lights, and some other misc. cabinets and some small appliances and other stuff.  Got all this from a store that was closing down.  Picked EVERYTHING up for $300!  Who needs storage units?  LOL!

I'd say the BOMB was $375 from what I can see (crap + crowd)
and I'd guess $130 for the dump (what brand was the bike?)

Another thing about this show is that when the "expert" throws out a price range (say $150-$300), their little on screen total always jumps by the largest amount.  Trying to make it just that much more profitable I guess.

Then, when they show him auctioning off the ivory at the end, he says the stuff sold for $2400 instead of $2000.  Okay, but what about the 35% - 40% that the auction house gets?  Sure, he made money, but if you take even 35% off of $2400, that only leaves you with a little over $1500.

As far as Barry throwing the crap outside........I can't believe that there isn't some salable items in that pile!  I know he is looking for the "big score", but what does happen to the rest of that stuff?  He would be better off trying to at least get some of his money back by selling it cheap to Jarrod and Brandi.

Lot's of questions, where's the answers?

Went on the Public run today.  It's a sad day when I bid $1600 on a locker, and I'm THIRD Bidder!  Ouch.  Ended up going for $1900.

Bid $1100 on another one, and I was FOURTH on that one, it went for $1750!

Even the small one I bid on and thought I had for $500 ended up going for $550!  It just wasn't meant to be today I guess.

Lot's of auctions tomorrow, so I'm going to try to go to one off the beaten path and hope for the best.

Crowds are still large, although I think they have peaked and are starting to drop some.  Still too many, but at least there is some hope!  Prices are still way high on most of the units though.
