General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Personal items
« on: February 23, 2014, 03:18:49 PM »
I hear from a lot of employees at the storage places that probably 90% of that stuff just sits there for 6 months or so and just gets thrown away.......very few people actually come back and pick up their personals.

That being said, I always try to return the pictures and photo albums and diplomas, child support orders, wage garnishments, divorce papers, criminal restitution papers, etc.  And of course any cremains in case they decide they don't want grandma to get tossed in the dump.

eBay / Re: Have you ever left negative feedback on another seller?
« on: February 21, 2014, 06:48:08 PM »
I bought a construction laser on ebay.  The guy had a picture of it in the case.  Said it worked fine.  I got it for like $325 including shipping.  Shows up and I open the box and it's in like five pieces.  He took the picture with it in the case and made it look like it was in good condition.  I immediately contacted him and he said that it would work fine if I put it together.  I said that you told me it worked.  He said that was my problem and he wasn't going to do anything for me.  I opened a case with ebay.  This was quite awhile ago, and the rules were a lot different then.  I ended up getting somewhere around $120 back out of ebay and was out the rest.  It was stupid.  I left the guy a bad feedback and of course he left me a retaliatory one.  I went back and commented on his (I don't think that ebay would let you get away with this now) that before you buy anything from this crook, contact me and I'll tell you about his business practices.  After a while, he wasn't even a registered user anymore.  But he had a definite pattern in his feedback.   He would sell a bunch of $20.00 items and ship them out and get good feedback.  Then he would sell a $300-$400 item and get a negative feedback because it was broken and then tell the people to get bent when they tried to get their money back!  Total scammer!

Craigslist / Re: cList....is dead!

Just checking......anybody see their craigslist pick up yet?  Up here in my area, it died about two weeks into January, and except for an occasional item here and there, it is still dead!  I've been hearing that from other regulars around the area too....

There are a bunch of sold items, but most seem to average between $15 - $30 with a few higher priced items interspersed.  I am really not that impressed......if that is all it takes to get a tv show, sign me up!

Seems like they accept quite a few "best offers" also.

I haven't seen the show......are they selling in their own store or something too?  I don't see them making a living just on what is selling on ebay recently.......

eBay / Re: eBay Wants to Use Pictures We Take in THEIR catalog
« on: February 12, 2014, 10:29:02 AM »
I personally hate it when someone uses a stock photo.  Anybody can Google something and see a stock picture.....I want to see a picture of the item I am buying that shows it's true condition and any potential flaws BEFORE I spend my money.

Now just hope it works better than mine does.  I bought one of  those no name brand Chinese replacement power supplies for my Toshiba laptop instead of spending the extra to get a genuine Toshiba one, and it get's super hot to the touch.....not just warm, but really, really hot.

I've had it for awhile now and should have sent it back right after I got it, but it's too late now.  Since then, whenever I have needed something like that, I spend a little more for the genuine one.....I know there are a lot of good knockoffs, but there are a lot of junk ones too.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: It's raining! Time for one big sale.
« on: February 07, 2014, 09:40:07 PM »
That was a nice score!  I'm all about moving stuff quick, but when I get something I know has the value, I'll hold out for the bigger bucks.......no sense in giving something away if you don't need the money at the moment.

I had a big sign this guy wanted.  He comes down totally unprepared.  I spend two hours messing with this guy and it just flat wasn't going to go in his truck.  I was going to sell it to him for a thousand.  I told him if he came back to pick it up it was going to be $1200 for all the time I wasted.......I didn't care if he came back, I knew it was worth more.

Long story short, he flaked and two weeks later I sold it to someone else for $1500.....he actually made me more money by being a jerk.....lol.

Went to another auction today....I'm on a roll!  Didn't buy anything again though.....

So are people getting their tax refunds already?  There was about 60 people today....more than I've seen at any auction in quite awhile now.  About five were regulars who I know have been doing this since way before the shows ever started.......a couple I recognized as newer bidders that have stuck around, and everybody else was new.

Best locker of the day had lot of broken and scratched up furniture and junk in it........myself and a couple of other regulars were talking about it and I figured it would go about $600 and pretty much we all agreed between $600-$800 is probably what it would sell for.  I would have been interested at $350-$400.  Anyway, the hammer dropped at $1250!  As it was climbing in price, we looked back in there to see what we missed.......I just didn't see it.......I see a lot of work to either break even or possibly even lose a little money on that one! we

Most of the lockers were typical junk...there was one more that I was interested in that had some boxes in it.  I thought maybe I had a chance......5'x5' about half full.....but a couple of new guys got into it and it was at $250 when i walked off to the next locker, so not sure what it ended up at.......I wouldn't have gone $100 on it......and then I see the episode of Auction Hunters where they bought a $5 locker and walked away with over 5K after finding a taser and a spear and some other stuff.........boy, did I make a mistake! :-[

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Where have "all" the posters gone ?
« on: February 06, 2014, 11:45:27 PM »
The last 4 days or so the "only" people posting are Travis and I.

What's happened to HGP, RFR, Cobia, Teacher, Alloro, Calcoastgal....geez, that's a pretty small group to keep this thing going.

Edit:

I looked back through the last 50 posts (through part of Feb 4, 2014) and of those posts, 44 or so were made by Travis and I. BWD made one and Luke had a few. Alloro had a couple.

You're slipping!  I made one on the 4th.....went to an auction and posted about it.....you missed!

Went to auction today with four lockers left for sale by auction time.  First one had a chair and an end table and some garbage....went for $5.  Second one had a few decent things.......refrigerator, flat screen tv, and lots of junk....I was seeing a big dump run in there.  It sold for $625.  Third one was a 5x10....I figured it was good for about $100.....sold for $325!  Last one had an old sewing machine and nothing else really interesting.......and not even that full......and it sold for $425!

What was interesting about this particular auction to me, was that there were only 18 people at the auction, but out of the 18 there were only three of us that were regulars.  Lot of new people spending stupid money.

eBay / Re: Everything you want to know about eBay..
« on: February 02, 2014, 11:26:54 AM »
Who buys paper?  I'm sitting on around 7000 sheets found in lockers!

However, I bought another color ink cartridge yesterday for 47 bucks..... :-[

Great idea on the thermal printer....I keep thinking about it but it's one of those things you just keep putting off looking into so you never get around to it.  New goal for the next couple of weeks, I want to get one of those set up in the shipping area!

Any suggestions for brands?  And is it any harder to print postage through ebay than it is now?  Does it print out a receipt too?
