The Treasure Chest / Re: Bought six lockers last week and found

I don't need 'proof'.  I happen to be into Harley's and love to see the things dude.  The majority wind up partially customized, and I think it's cool to see what is going on in the world of personalization.

Yeah but its pretty much Irrelevant now that its not in the unit anymore. I didnt  take a photo of bike in the shed. So any photo is basically Irrelevant.

That's like saying you slept with Jennifer Anniston but since it wasn't in the back of a limo it doesn't really count.

Anybody know a place that fixes laptops?
I got a pretty new one the other day but dont have a power cord so i dont know if it works or not.

Depending on the model, you can get a power cord relatively cheaply.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=laptop+power+cords&_sacat=See-All-Categories

Before I took it to a shop to get it fixed I'd order the power cord and see if it works or not.  Repair costs on laptops can get pretty pricey, so make sure you need it before you do it.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Antique Dollhouse
« on: September 20, 2011, 01:39:01 PM »
Google doll house museums/collectors in your area and see if they might be interested.  Find an 'expert' in them, and take a chance and take it to them to see if they'll 'appraise it'.
Reason I recommend that?  If they're as addicted as some collectors (read, all of us)l, there's a chance they may buy it from you on the spot for more money.
If not that, contact some specialty auctioneers and see what they recommend.

I am an Asian(From Hong Kong) if you drink some of it, it will make you better on having sex, but if you drink too much in short period, you will be ending up in the Hospital.... ;D

I'd rather take my chances with duct tape and Popsicle sticks than sucking down snake juice.

I laughed also on Hester's 'I grossed over one million dollars last year', like that should immediately have them build him an alter and begin worshiping him, until Daryl pointed out the reality that gross doesn't mean anything, and asked how much he netted.  Hester never answered that.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Was this a one time deal? or my noob mistake?

Agree with both above.  Each seller (remember, not all are auctioneer's), is unique and has differing ways to do things.  Some will call two hundred, two hundred, two hundred sold for 175, others will do the going once, twice (I've rarely seen that).

Damn. That is nice.  If I ever meet you in person, I'm dragging you to the lottery sales office in the area and rubbing your head until I win the damn thing.  You hit a homer.

I have a very low tolerance for idiots and almost no patience in general (bad combo, yes?). I'd probably lose it with people like that in probably 2 minutes (and that's just being optimistic).

Although I am a newbie to the auctions, having gotten away from it for years, one thing I did enjoy on my last 'caravan' was one jackass kept bidding on every locker, jacking the price up.  He didn't win any, but on the second to the last stop (after he'd already bid up where I dropped on a couple of lockers I liked) one of the old hands changed his bidding habits to the 'gold mine' routine, where he was bidding as fast as jackass raised him...then, rather than hesitating (I had no idea what he was bidding on.  He was already two or three hundred beyond what I would have optimistically paid for it), he simply stopped bidding.
Jackass had the high bid (about 800 bucks), and this stunned expression.  You could tell he'd been doing the bidding just to play Dave Hester and screw people out of their money.
The old timer just walked by him after the auctioneer called 'sold' and pointed at him, and he simply said 'you **** people, you get ****ed.  Bid if your serious.  Otherwise watch your goddamned tv show and play the lottery.'
I thought that was brilliant.  The jackass just disappeared after that.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: At what point do you throw it away???
« on: September 15, 2011, 02:46:15 PM »
I would say that this is more than hobby, yet less than a full time business.  I spend about 90% of my off time dealing with craigs/ebay.  I still work about 55 hours per week at my "real job", but am using this to support play money/retirement and what not.  Its a 7 day per week thing, but only may be for 1-2 hours at night wrapping sold items or listing others that haven't sold.  I hit up the auctions 3-4 days per week, and buy what is "my style" of locker i.e. nice smalls.  I just seem to have a ton of clothes at this point in time.
I treat it as a business in the sense that I am not going to make a poor decision on the usage of funds.  I am certainly not in it for the "treasure hunt" that all to many people are getting caught up in.  Everything has a value to someone, its finding that someone without losing money that seems to be the issue.

I'd also, if you've got those types of nice clothing items that aren't moving, go to a local thrift store and see if they'll give you a bit of cash for the items.  Yeah, you may only get fifty cents for each, but if you have a bunch, that could still be fifty or sixty dollars, and I'd rather have cash than a tax deduction!

I wouldn't list the motorcycle dude for under $75.00.  Yeah, it's high, but it appears to be trench art, and folksy looking, which does have a following.  You would be surprised at what art collectors/fans will pay for something like that.
That includes bikers. If it doesn't sell at that price, then I'd drop it to about $50.00, but I'd be surprised if you don't get an offer on it for that range to begin with.  It's funky, and funky sells.

That ROI looks about right to me, but a word of caution for the new folks, that does'nt take out all the expenses (fuel, labor, dump run, sales fees, etc.) or income taxes.

Or buying a locker just to buy it.  These guys are pretty good at finding decent units.  There's a lot of losers out there, as well.
I appreciated the comment about all the work involved in doing these units.

my most recent 10x20 was stuffed with good, yet old electronics and things.  A LOT of 1-5 dollar items that I don't want to throw out, but its a pain to organize everything and get it prepared for sale on ebay/craigs.  My community only has 1 more garage sale scheduled for the year and its in the middle of october.  I guess we will see what happens.

Not being a smart ass, but, although you are correct in that 'all things have value to someone', at what point does it become more fiscally responsible to heave their 'treasure', because it has become your trash?
If you're renting a storage unit at $100.00 a month, how much material is in it, and, every month that you sit on it you add to the deficit, how much more profit does it now need to generate just to break even?
Spending a dollar to save a dime is not a wise business decision, as I'm sure you're well aware of as a business owner, J.
Would it not be more beneficial to dump it off on  'curio shops, thrift stores, second hand stores and, if worse comes to to worse, the land fill, than to sit on it, draining $100.00 a month from your pocket, unless you have other things in the unit and need that much space?
