Online Storage Auctions / Online Auctions Reach Central Texas
« on: April 05, 2012, 01:41:09 PM »
From the sealed online bids site:

sealedonlinebids (dot) com

This seems to be the first and only auction listed in the Central Texas area.

I could see it being a popular alternative here due to the outrageous summer heat, but we all know how distrusting auction buyers are!!   ;)

I'll be watching it just to see where it ends. If you want to throw out your guesses, please chime in!!

Stories about Storage Auctions / Auction Scene #3...March, 2012
« on: March 01, 2012, 10:45:06 AM »
I think the short month screwed up MovieMan's usual starting of the Auction Scene thread.  ;)

March is here and it brings a new round of auctions. Let's get those field reports coming and hopefully most of them will have a positive outcome for our boardies!!

General Storage Auction Talk / Researching Tenants
« on: January 24, 2012, 05:45:33 PM »
I know we've had discussions here on the boards about researching the defaulting tenants, but I had never bothered.

Well, I was reviewing a legal notice for an auction I plan on attending on Thursday and decided to look up one of the names just to see what I could find.

I did find her. Name, address, age, relatives living with her.

She's 64 and living with two male relatives in there 70s. She lives about a mile from me, where she has lived for almost twenty years. I didn't learn anything about her career-wise.

But, I realized. I don't want to know. It hasn't given me any indication of what kind of value I will find in the locker. Fact is, I'll still have to wait with everyone else until that door is opened and determine what I will pay for what is in front of me. That said, I think the less personal it is, the better.

Anyhow, this is the monthly Public Storage auction, run by their district manager and only publicized in the legal notice, so normally a manageable crowd. Will report in the Auction Scene thread.

eBay / Joe Paterno
« on: January 24, 2012, 01:29:14 AM »
You all may or may not have heard that the legendary college football coach Joe Paterno died.

I hate to sound like a heartless bastard, but all the Paterno stuff listed on ebay seems to be getting bid up pretty strong. If you guys have anything Paterno or Penn State related, you may want to list it on e-bay now.

I suppose it's something we should all keep in the back of our minds as we sort through our celebrity memorabilia items. It might suck, but death sells.

Picker's Paradise / Estate Sales
« on: January 03, 2012, 01:37:13 AM »
I was checking out listings for upcoming estate sales and I thought I should get some opinions, as this would be my first time.

The company I was looking at tends to mostly do 3-day sales over a weekend, where they charge full price on Friday, 25% off Saturday and 50% off Sunday. This seems fairly typical.

For resale purposes, we obvioulsy want to buy as low as possible, but I'm curious what kind of selection is left come Sunday.

Has anyone had success shopping the final day of an estate sale? I'd also love to hear any general advice or stories you may have from your prior experiences.

Picker's Paradise / Your Favorite Non-Storage Source For Product?

I guess it's my fault that this forum exists, so I might as well kick things off.  :P

Suggestion Center / New Forum For "The Marketplace"
« on: December 10, 2011, 02:50:50 PM »
Thought I'd throw this out there.

We already have an area for "Other forms of Selling." Any thoughts on adding an "Other Forms of Buying" section?

I know a lot of the forum members have multiple means of acquiring product in addition to storage auctions and thought it might be a good idea to have a specific place for us to discuss picking/estate sales and so forth.

Let me know what you think!!

Flea Markets / Liability Insurance?
« on: December 09, 2011, 01:34:20 PM »
Saw an ad for a new flea opening in my area in January. The ad stated that they require sellers to have a resale permit (expected) and liability insurance. I've never heard of this, but thought I'd see if anyone else has run into something like this.

I'm assuming that the operators are trying to keep their own costs low and pass that responsibility on to the vendors.

And how much would liability insurance be for a flea booth??

Whole thing just seems like an odd PITA to me.

Flea Markets / Black Friday Results??
« on: November 26, 2011, 11:36:16 AM »
We had a bit of talk about selling on black friday, so I'm curious to see peoples results.

Did you sell on black friday? How did you go about it (flea, etc)? Most important, how well did you do?

The Lounge / Glendon's Squandered Opportunity
« on: November 23, 2011, 08:23:54 PM »
Post is kinda long-winded. Just thought I'd warn you.

The first time I ever heard of Glendon Cameron was here on these boards in the behemoth of a thread in the newbie section. By the time I got to reading it there were already over 100 posts and I kept putting it off, but wondered what was so fascinating that it got that much attention.

So, I start reading the thread and it seems to be your typical debate about the pros and cons of Mr. Cameron's products and I figured I should check this stuff out on my own at some point and make up my own mind.

Then something interesting happened. Glendon Cameron joined the boards and jumped into the discussion. My first thought was, "Cool. We get to hear from the man himself." But when he came out of the gates calling everyone b****** and threatening to sue a half-dozen different people, I was completely turned off.

The rest of the thread was similarly filled with defensive posts by Mr. Cameron and by the end I was somewhat surprised by what had gone down. But, there hadn't been any posts in a while and I figured that was the end of that and whatever.

Lo and behold, today,  a challenge is issued. I'm sure most of you have read it. If you haven't it's in the General Auction Talk section.

General Storage Auction Talk / Handbag Authentication
« on: November 14, 2011, 11:38:19 PM »
Does anyone have a good source for determining the authenticity of designer handbags?

I may have found a near-endless source of second-hand designer bags, but if 90% of them are counterfeit, then it doesn't help me.

Any suggestions out there?

Welcome to the Online Storage Auctions Forum / No Longer in the Shadows
« on: November 07, 2011, 02:54:12 PM »
Hey, everybody. Been lurking in these forums and decided to join in.

I am a total newb to storage auctions, but have been out of work for a few months, so it should at least keep me busy while I look for a job.

Will be attending my first auctions next week. May bid, may not, depends on what is available. I do have a plan in place, based on budget and logistical considerations.

All that said, I have already learned a ton from reading everyone's posts and truly appreciate all of your willingness to share information.
