The Lounge / Re: So what's everyone been up to?
« on: April 28, 2015, 06:27:38 PM »
Bought those 20 storage pods.  Got a lot of antiques and a black powder pistol and a bunch of Hummels, Waterford Crystal, etc......still have five I haven't even looked at yet.  Got a fighter pilot helmet that sold for $512 on eBay a few days ago.  Got a high end stereo from 30 years ago that is worth around 1200....everything is used but was repacked in the original boxes and it was in storage for almost 30 years and is in mint condition.  Good money in these but a lot of work to move that volume and go through it all.

General Storage Auction Talk / Biggest Buy I've Made Yet!
« on: April 12, 2015, 11:41:38 PM »
So it seems like nobody is talking about any of their purchases much anymore.....is anybody on here buying any lockers at all?

I went to a storage vault auction at a moving and storage company last week.  I bought 20 vaults, every one of them professionally wrapped and boxed.

Ended up with multiple sets of boxes belonging to the same people.  One of 11, one of 5, one of 3, and a single.

So far, all I know is I did get some nice antiques, which I don't normally get very excited about, but I see three or four pieces which should get my money back on the entire lot.

So to move all this, it took one 26' Freightliner box truck, one Chevy cargo van load, and three loads in a Chevy diesel truck and 20' box trailer.  And of course a warehouse to cram it all in.

I'll be going through it starting this week....I probably have 300 sealed boxes and I haven't looked in any of them yet!  With the quality of some of the furniture I have seen, I am hoping they had some good stuff in the boxes too.  Anyway, kind of excited to see what I got......if I find any golden statues I'll let you know....:-)

I think you hit that right on the head.  So many people jumped into this thinking there was going to be a golden Buddha statue hidden in every locker and they were just going to haul all the money they were making to the bank by the wheelbarrow full!

Turns out not every one is cut out to deal with rat and mice turds, dirty clothes, used personal toys, garbage, cat pee, and broken furniture.  It is very hard work and the people that make the money are the ones that can sell the normal and mundane household items......it's not glamorous and you do not get rich quick!

I did end up with two today.  One had seven 22" rims and tires.....one complete set of four 22" x 9.5" rims that are in decent shape and four good tires so one good complete set and three more rims that have a lot of road rash and don't match.

Same locker also had a 46" lcd and a smaller lcd.

Other locker had an oak table with leaf and chairs, and a sofa, and a little bit of money and some garbage boxes.  Ended up paying $169.00 for both.  Should do okay on those two.

General Storage Auction Talk / Is ANYONE Out There Still Buying Lockers?
« on: December 28, 2014, 10:13:36 PM »
Just wondered if anyone on here is actually buying lockers anymore?  I have an auction in the morning but there hasn't been much talk about anybody getting new units.  Everybody change professions now?

Storage Auctions "In The News" / Buyer Wins Unit with Two Kids Inside
« on: December 19, 2014, 01:25:21 PM »
COLFAX, Calif. (AP) — Authorities in Northern California are investigating how the bodies of two infants or fetuses ended up in a storage unit.

The Placer County sheriff's office says a woman called authorities Nov. 25 to report an odor coming from the abandoned storage space in the city of Colfax, about 40 miles northeast of Sacramento. She had just purchased the contents of the storage unit at auction.

The Sacramento Bee reports deputies found the decomposing remains of a fetus or infant in a container, and a deputy coroner confirmed the remains were human. Later, a second fetus or infant was discovered in the container.

Sheriff's officials say detectives have interviewed a woman believed to be the mother. They're waiting for the results of forensic and toxicology tests before determining how to proceed.

The Lounge / Public Storage Burns in Ferguson!
« on: November 25, 2014, 01:30:19 AM »
So while some went shopping and looting, others started fires.  I was watching Public Storage burn on the news, the office and managers apartment were burning to the ground.  I hope they got out okay or weren't home!

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: How do you get a title to a motorcycle?
« on: October 17, 2014, 12:11:43 AM »
Just bought a locker two weeks ago and got a Dodge van, a Chevy Cavalier, and a small enclosed cargo trailer, along with lots of other stuff.  Got paperwork for all three, transferred no problem.

Got a motorcycle a while back, got paperwork with it too, no problem.  Side note to that one...I had some of the stuff for sale at the swap meet that came out of the same locker.  Kid says "hey, that looks like my moms Christmas stuff......he brought me the key and some other stuff for the motorcycle, and I gave him all his moms Christmas stuff...worked out great!

I just went to an auction two weeks ago.....this guy was outside the fence yelling at the crowd, but he didn't come in through the gate.  He was screaming that his entire life was in those lockers and it's not fair that he should lose his entire life because he couldn't pay.  The facility owner told him to leave and he kept yelling and the police showed up and talked to him and he left.  I bought one of his lockers.....wish I would have bought the other one too!

I haven't been able to stand that show for a couple of seasons now.....just to "over the top" for me.  I'm really surprised that it is still around.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Consignment & Auction Houses?
« on: August 28, 2014, 10:17:37 PM »
I use the little local auction house for certain items......I have done every thing from 5K plus tool sales to just boxes of yarn that weren't selling on craigslist and actually went for decent money at the auction house.  Just depends on what it is and if I just want to get rid of some stuff.  The auctions are good for getting rid of a lot of stuff fast, but not necessarily for top dollar.  But sometimes the stuff just needs to go to make room....end of garage sale season is coming up and I'm going to purge a lot of stuff at the end of September.......some of it at the auction house.

Never a hydroponic one, but I have come across a few.  I have found charcoal filters, tons of fans, tons of lights from 400-1000 watt...MH and HPS......with ballasts, the little grow rooms (4'x8' and 4'x6') and all kinds of hoods and set ups.....some professional and some just pieced together home made set ups.  It all sells though!

Bought one last week that had a front load Samsung washer and dryer showing along with some other good stuff.  But, it had a shaved ice machine in the locker and they had left some syrups in the front and there were some sugar ants in the front of the locker.  It was the last unit of the day, and every body was fixated on the ants and nobody wanted to bid much.  I got it for $109.00 and sold $700.00 worth out of it the next day.  Ended up doing very well on that locker already and still have a lot left.

Oh, and immediately after the auction, the facility manager grabbed the syrup and threw it in his dumpster and sprayed for the ants.  I went back to unload the next day and there was no ant problem........ :93:

The Treasure Chest / Re: Bought 12 Lockers Yesterday at One Auction!

Did they charge you a cleaning deposit for each of the 12 units?

There is normally a $100 a unit deposit, but since the auctioneer knows me and I always clean my stuff out, he only charged me $200 total, and I got the rest of them cleaned out today and got my deposit back.

I will let the stuff sit in the truck until Tuesday and then unload, so probably won't find out much more until then.

Short update for now.....took a Chevy duramax diesel crew cab, and three helpers and myself.  Behind that was a 20 foot enclosed trailer.  We busted our butts all day long, but I got 9 lockers cleaned out completely and one almost done......so have two small lockers and a partial to go.....I'm just going to take the van down in the morning (I have a 2012 Chevy cargo van) and finish getting the rest of the stuff out.

I plan on moving it into a new shop I'm getting on Tuesday, so then I will be able to sort it all and figure out where it all goes....ebay, craigslist, garage sale, auction house......wherever I think it will sell best and for the best profit.

I will update a little more on anything good I find......there was some furniture and three twin beds that were all like new, and a nice antique secretary desk.....lots of tools, grinders, all kinds of painting stuff  (think maybe one of the guys was a professional house painter) and I got a bunch of arrows with broadheads, lots of kitchen stuff, and a bunch of it is new in boxes...some with receipts so I may even be able to return some for cash or store credit.

There were also way too many books, and a bunch of clothes, a wine refrigerator, pictures, old fishing poles, a nice fiberglass step ladder, a futon ( I hate those things) lots of toys and kids stuff, a bunch of remote control airplanes, most of which have never been assembled and are still in the boxes, and a couple that have been.  I know there is at least one remote for the r/c planes also!   Anyway, I haven't dug into these things in detail by any means, these are just some of the items I remember seeing when we were loading up.

I'm happy, but exhausted!
