New to Storage Auctions? / Flipping a Unit
« on: April 08, 2012, 11:28:30 AM »
Hi and Happy Holidays.  I am fairly new to the business.  Have gone to numerous auctions and finally purchased a 10x30 unit in March.  It's a great unit with a lot of collectible items ranging from dolls to old magazines, pepsi glasses, sports memorabilia, etc.

I live in Cumming, GA and don't have a "guy".  Other than Ebay and Craigs list, I don't know where to go or who to contact to show/get appraisals on some of these valuable items.

Does anyone have a list for the Atlanta area of people who collect, purchase collectible miscellaneous items.

Thanks in advance for all that you do.

Thanks StorMe.  I have an auction house already scheduled with alot of my stuff.  But I still have many collectible items here that I was hoping to find a "guy" to bring them to, especially for future units with odds and ends.

Ohhh, I forgot to mention. The wooden box that looked like a jewelry box turned out to be a handpainted Asian Kingdom Chinese Chess Set.  Other people who have this are selling this particular chess set for approximately $150 and their box is not as in good condition as mine.   :)

Stories about Storage Auctions / MY RAT UNIT
« on: March 24, 2012, 10:32:38 AM »
Well, after kissing a lot of frogs I finally purchased/won my first unit on March 7, 2012.  It was a 10x30.  That's an awfully big unit for a first one so I suppose you could say I got a crash course on storage locker buying.  When the door opened up the first few things I saw were some antique pieces of furniture, a baseball card collection and something that looked like a wooden jewelry box.  I didn't expect the jewelry box to have anything of value in it though since it was right out in front....Voluminous amount of boxes and then plenty of things I couldn't see past that.  I set a price of $500.  I got the locker for $475.  Once I paid and got inside the locker, it took about one minute before I realized this locker was rat infested.  I moved one box of the baseball collection and I all I could see was rat droppings EVERYWHERE.  Not to mention the smell of rat urine.  I wanted to die right then and there.  Long story short, it took me 2 1/2 days to process this unit, mostly because most of the items had to be set aside for trash because of the urine smell. Quite sad because a lot of those items were resellable.  The unit was partially commercial and partially household.  The facility manager acknowledged knowing they had a rat problem with several units in that row so they allowed us extra time to clean it out without extra charge.  So thoughtful of them.  Well, by now, the 24th of March, I have completed cleaning, sanitizing, and sorting the items from the unit.  I gave most of the items to an auctioneer who also has an auction house and I believe I will triple my money.

In the locker were collectible dolls which I have on Ebay and not selling.  I also have an amazing collection of vintage Pepsi glasses.  As a new seller on Ebay, noone is buying from me, so thats a problem.  Oh, in the unit was also two spa bathtubs.  I have those on craigs list.

Here is my question and i'm going to post this elsewhere to.  ANYONE FROM THE ATLANTA, GA AREA?  I do not have a "guy".  I DON'T KNOW ANYONE WHO BUYS COLLECTIBLES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER IT'S SPORTS MEMORABILIA OR THINGS LIKE THE PEPSI GLASSES I HAVE.  I PREFER NOT USING EBAY.  THERE MUST BE SOMEONE OUT THERE THAT WE CAN TAKE ITEMS TO, TO SELL.  ANY IDEAS????

Welcome to the Online Storage Auctions Forum / Re: Hello all from Duluth GA

Good morning Duluth, GA
I'm from Cumming, GA.  Absolutely read everything you can get your hands on.  Even though they are reality shows, I've learned sooo much from watching Auction Hunters, Storage Wars and Storage Hunters.  You can learn how to bid, how to profile a unit, etc.,, from watching and reading.  DON'T QUIT YOUR JOB, lol.  I work full time as well but i'm hoping this will work out so that one day I can retire and just do this full time.  It's a blast.

Good luck and keep us posted on the auctions you attend and units you buy.

Good luck Buffalo.  Definitely return to the forum and let us know how you did and how the auction was run.  I've been to a few and the cool thing is, every single one was run differently so I'm getting a wealth of experience all at once.

Can't wait to hear!!

The "Other" Job / Challenges of Working Full Time
« on: February 06, 2012, 04:20:10 PM »
The biggest challenge i'm finding is that I do have a full time job as a writer for Social Security.  I basically can only attend auctions on Saturdays. I'm finding there are a lot more auctions during the week.

Have any of you, who go to auctions during the week and on Saturdays, a difference?  Would you say there are more or less attendees on Saturdays?

Thank you Cobia.  Your response brings me to another question. Although I have attended a couple of auctions, I have not purchased a locker yet.  If you do, do you have to pay sales tax on it?

I am hoping to start buying lockers within a week or two..... 8)

New to Storage Auctions? / Resale License

Good morning and good Monday,
Do you need a resale license to be a regular seller on Ebay or a regular seller at local thrift stores/flea markets, etc.?

So, tell me how you really really feel about pawn shops.  Just kidding.  Thanks for the advice guys. I appreciate it.  I only thought of the pawn shop because it's local but i'd rather get the most money, obviously....

Do you think consignment shops are good places to sell some things?  I have a kids shop and a mens and womens clothing consignment nearby and was wondering if that would be a good place to sell things.  Also, what about pawn shops to sell used power tools?  I have a pawn shop right near my house as well and would like to devleop relationships with these store owners, but only if it would pay off.  It's nice, local and convenient.

Thanks....
