Picker's Paradise / Shopping for a Living
« on: January 11, 2017, 11:39:56 AM »
I hit a lot of thrift stores and pawn shops (at least I did before the surgery) but I recall thinking that I could make a living as a professional shopper just cherry picking the jems and incredible deals and reselling them for a profit. is anyone else doing this?

This may be old news to some of you, but it looks like Storage Treasures was bought out by OpenTech Alliance, Inc. about 9 months ago.

The Lounge / How's everyone doing?
« on: June 04, 2016, 04:27:11 AM »
How's everyone doing? It's been a while.

Last time I was here, it was like a one / two punch. One, sites got hacked. Two, diagnosed with a gigantic tumor on my spine moving into my brain. Scheduled for Neurosurgery in a couple months. Lord willing, everything will go well.

So what's been going on on the forum lately? Any spam need to be deleted?

Anything interesting been happening in the world of storage auctions?

Any good scores lately?

The Lounge / Houston, We've Got a Problem!
« on: July 17, 2015, 10:51:20 PM »
Or perhaps "London, We've Got a Problem!" would be more appropriate.

Some of you may have noticed that our server went down several times today. I couldn't figure out how that was possible because we've never been knocked offline, even under some extreme loads.

Well, the server took a beating from the British today. Over the past year, we've been getting a lot of global traffic and this afternoon we had a spike unlike anything we've ever seen before. I'll just show you the numbers and leave it at that.

Storage Auctions "In The News" / Storage unit buyers find meth lab
« on: July 17, 2015, 04:56:15 PM »
So these guys uncover meth lab equipment with a batch of meth still inside a beaker, then call the cops. They come in HAZMAT suits.  :-[

Funny thing is, the buyers look like the type that would instantly recognize the product.   :72:

Company News / We're moving back to Cloudflare
« on: July 16, 2015, 03:52:39 PM »
We're moving the site back to Cloudflare this evening (07/16/15)

We're tightening security and improving the site's performance, but we did have some issues with this service in the past that have since been resolved.

Hopefully there will be no issues, but just in case, here is an alternate way to reach us to report any issues.  http://auctionstx.com/contact-us/

Came across this news story from 2013: http://www.local8now.com/home/headlines/Man-turns-to-police-after-strange-storage-unit-find--230601411.html

So what do you think? Some sick fetish, or just someone's twisted Halloween decorations?

The Lounge / Miami Vice Ferrari Goes Up For Auction
« on: July 10, 2015, 01:58:09 AM »
Okay, this is just a cool story. As a child, I loved Miami Vice. I wanted to be Don Johnson. At 8 years old, I went out and bought a white suit just like his. It's quite embarrassing to think about now, but not quite as bad as the red leather zipper pants and jacket I owned during my Michael Jackson phase...but that's a whole different story.  :67:

Anyway, it looks like ol' Crockett's white Ferrari Testarossa is up for auction. It's estimated to fetch $600,000 to $800,000. The average Testarossa is selling in the $60,000 to $80,000 range, so that's quite a premium for 80's nostalgia. At least it's a V12.

Reality Shows about Storage Auctions / Dave Hester / Dan Dotson Fight
« on: July 05, 2015, 11:27:17 AM »
A few weeks ago, I heard that Dan Dotson & Dave Hester got into a fight. Didn't really have time to read the article. Does anyone know what happened? Did they air the episode yet?

Be sure to vote in the poll above.

Last week, a competitor of ours and I got into a debate over what the most appropriate term was for our industry. Ironically, he argued that "online storage auctions" was the most appropriate term, while I argued that "online self-storage auctions" was the correct term.

My reason for selecting "online self-storage auctions," is simple. Our industry doesn't cater to the storage industry, it caters to the self-storage industry. The term "storage" is too broad. There are all types of storage industries eg. data storage, organizational storage, oil & gas storage, etc. This is most likely why the self-storage industry chose the more specific term self-storage.

Self-storage, self-storage auctions, online self-storage auctions. It's a natural progression.

Another thing to consider is that the term "storage auction" is a misnomer. The auction isn't for "storage," it's for the contents of the storage unit. Perhaps the term "online self-storage lien sales" is more appropriate.

So what do you guys think? Does one term make more sense than another? If so, why?

The Lounge / Meet the newest member of our family
« on: June 28, 2015, 05:38:56 PM »
Meet Bo, my daughter's new Palomino. (You have to be logged in to see the photo.) They're both 5 years old. Man, they grow up quick don't they? Next, she'll be asking for some ponies under the hood. And I'm the sucker who always falls for those big blue eyes and will inevitably say  :72: Aren't her boots cute?   ???  Never thought I'd hear myself say those words out loud.

South West / AuctionsTX.com Upgrade Underway
« on: June 22, 2015, 03:32:07 AM »
Up late tonight getting ready for tomorrow's upgrade. Wish I was  :a012:

We're launching some awesome new features on AuctionsTX.com. For the past 5 years we've provided the most comprehensive storage auction schedule for the 5 largest cities in Texas, but I have to admit, up until now, the actual schedule was pretty basic. Just a spreadsheet converted to a PDF. Despite it's simplicity, it has a great following. Plus, we have the best advertising team that money can't buy.... our loyal members!

That being said, we're improving the site by adding some great new features for our members like a calendar view, integrating Google maps and beginning the next week, auctions will be added to the calendar as we locate them. This will give members the ability to view auctions up to a month in advance. We're also considering adding a few other features like content descriptions, additional facility details, and turn by turn directions.

The changes will be implemented this evening and hopefully everything will go smoothly so we can finally get our beauty sleep.  :bedtime2:

Does this remind you of anyone? Yourself perhaps?

Gas isn't cheap these days and if you can make it home safely in one trip...keep stacking!

We used to pack our box trucks the same way, floor to ceiling, every space got filled.

Storage Hunters UK just launched a game. Looks pretty similar to the Storage Wars version that was released last year.

eBay / Does anyone else find the commercials on eBay annoying?
« on: May 19, 2015, 05:15:17 PM »
The last couple of times I've visited eBay, I've noticed that they're displaying 30 second long commercials. There is no "skip ad" button, so you're basically forced to sit through it. Has anyone else had this happen to them?
