When the Storage mgmt and its employees reserve the right to bid. This is what you got on your paper after siging in. Why you ask do  not like this it because I think they have personally go in into the units and have see a better look then the rest of the people bidding at auction. They know what units are junk and have picked through the units .

General Storage Auction Talk / What do you think this unit sells for
« on: August 09, 2012, 04:34:55 PM »
I bet it goes for way high price Cause I'm going to bid 600 out the gate and bidders will take it to 800 to 900  due to people hate to loose and they love to over pay for these units for some reason

Here is the think. URL no longer active. My max I would bid on this unit is 380.00

Went to an auction today and like the last few the bid starts off on what is owed on the units and then taken from there. Are you seeing this in your area as well?

YOU HAVE!!--The Sherman Act of 1890 and "bid rigging".

Bid rigging is the result of a conspiracy between two or more participants entered into for the purpose of artificially affecting auction prices. The parties' agreement to the scheme is the necessary keystone to establish a violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act. Here are two important points about bid rigging that are not commonly known.First, a violation of the Sherman Act does not occur when a rigged bid is executed in an auction. The law is broken at the moment the conspiracy was formed by the co-conspirators. The Sherman Act outlaws a conspiracy made "in restraint of trade or commerce." The statute is triggered upon the parties' making an agreement to do what is impermissible, and it does not require execution of the plan.

Second, it is not necessary for the conspiracy to succeed for the Sherman Act to be violated. Again, the violation occurs immediately upon the parties making an agreement that is prohibited by law. If two or more would-be bidders conspire to depress bidding in an auction, they have violated the act even if their plan fails. Likewise, if an auctioneer and a shill, or a seller and an accomplice, conspire to artificially boost prices in an auction, a violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act has occurred regardless of whether they gain a higher selling price.

Upon conviction, the statute provides for a "fine not exceeding $100,000,000 if a corporation, or, if any other person, $1,000,000, or by imprisonment not exceeding 10 years.

The Sherman Act is clearly broken in one episode where hosts Allen Haff and Clinton "Ton" Jones use the phrase "Drop the unit on him", where they deliberately inflate the unit's price to $950.00 and then stop bidding.

As employee's of Spike TV, Allen Haff and Clinton "Ton" Jones are not liable, however Spike TV is guilty of breaking The Sherman Antitrust Act as the corporation that hired and promoted the activity. Spike TV should be getting a 100 million dollar fine.  Wait!  It's fake remember, so Spike will never see such a fine, proving this show is nothing more than a "show" and not reality.

Why use the A-team intro for Storage Wars. A-teams work together and there is no  work together on that show. What a sell out! They have taken this show way to deep from what it started out to be. I know the producer have an obligation to the ad companys to make the show watchable and entertaining but this is way too much. Here is the link http://www.aetv.com/storage-wars/?paidlink=1&cmpid=PaidSearch_Google_tune_AETV_storage%2Bwars_storage%2Bwar&utm_source=google_tune&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=storage%20wars&utm_term=storage%20war

« on: May 22, 2012, 02:24:35 PM »
I was watching the online bids and was wondering why all these great units that end this Friday and Sat. are priced so low! Then it hit me the auction tv show buyers take holiday weekends off due to there not the serious buyers.  So bet prices will be low for the upcoming Memriol day holiday.

General Storage Auction Talk / The REALITY of Storage Unit Auctions
« on: April 27, 2012, 03:10:37 PM »
Would you disagree with this article or more agree on this?  I agree on this part of the article 100% " People are using the last of their money to buy up units hoping to find that one miracle item only to find they have now thrown away their cash on a unit full of trash and are worse off then when they started. "

The REALITY of Storage Unit Auctions
Being that I have been to many of these auctions myself prior to this show being aired, there are some things that the shows producers choose not to show you.

Yes it is a great that one unit in a few thousand (if your lucky) has that great turn over item in it, in all reality, you are lucky to break even on most units.  By the time you pay for the unit, clean out it our or pay the clean out fee, transport the stuff to your location, invest the time and money into the items you found to clean them, sort them and sell them, you are luck enough to not be in the red when it is all said and done.  Unless you have an outlet to already sell or auction these items off, to randomly purchase units is only going to loose you money.

What the show needs to show you is the units where the furniture is tarped and looks like new, only to finally be able to get into the paid unit to find pieces are actually busted-up, vermin/insect infested or water/smoke damaged.  Boxes full of junk that cost you more to dispose of them to buy the unit.

Another key point is the illegal issues of some of the items you find.  Stolen items, drugs, fire arms, etc are all over the place in many of these units and if you as the buyer does not know what to do about them can end up with yourself in a lot of hot water.

Finally, while this makes competition hard for those who are actually established in the industry, my concern is more for the people who are watching the show and being mislead into believing there is a quick buck to be made in these storage units.  People are using the last of their money to buy up units hoping to find that one miracle item only to find they have now thrown away their cash on a unit full of trash and are worse off then when they started.  These storage unit shows are making these units out to be pots of gold sitting at the end of rainbows when in reality most are filled with personal memorabilia that is worthless to those who didn't own it originally or boxes and bags of trash that the owner decided wasn't worth paying on anymore.

P.S. For those of you concerned about the personal items like tax papers and baby pictures, a lot of the people who do this for a living and have for years do make an honest effort to contact original owners whenever possible.  These items are of no use to the buyers and they would rather see you get your grandma's wedding picture back then throw it in a dumpster.

A little short on reality, but fun
As a former storage manager, I enjoy watching this, but for those who want to try to make a quick buck, this is what I found out:

Don't always believe what you see.   Maybe I was just unfortunate to manage (aka be an underpaid employee of)   two facilities - one in So. Cal, one in No. Cal. -  all that ceremonial lock-cutting may not be what it seems.

The first facility I worked for would go into the unit after hours and remove anything of real value.  Once there was just a hot-tub (value around $5000) and they were stuck with auction, but had a shill bidder there who outbid everyone on purpose.  The facility owner then paid the auctioneer his cut and got back the remaining bid amount.  And the hot tub was his to install at his house.

The second facility would also go into the units beforehand and shuffle contents around, making one or two high-end units out of five or six smaller ones, and let the amateurs bid on the remaining junk units that had been pilfered.

It would be fun if the facility owners can be trusted, but better ask around.  The storage laws are too easily broken, and even though in a lot of states the owners can only keep the rental amount due and the expenses of auction, who is going to argue about whether this or that object was really in the unit or not?   The cops/district attorneys have better things to do.

Due to people way over bidding and making sure the storage companys are always in the plus year after year , now is the time to invest in certain storage companys. The companys have to be making huge profits and no loses. Why blow 1200.00 when I person could invest that in stock and make a profit?

General Storage Auction Talk / With the new auction show comming out
« on: April 11, 2012, 10:08:43 AM »
in which I called last year Baggage battles on bidding on people lost luggage hopefully the people that starting going to storage auctions due to the tv shows can divert there way over to baggage auctions. Let the airports deal with the big crowds. Im sure this show will have huge finds worth thousands and thousands of dollars. Hope the show makes it look like this auction is the one  to be at. Like I said monkey see monkey do. Wonder if every airport will be holding auctions?
