Garage Sales / Online Yard Sale (Pick-up on Saturday)??
« on: March 04, 2013, 12:09:23 PM »
We have a new trend for our area it seems.  Don't know about other cities / locations.  People are doing I assume Facebook online yardsale of items.  Then every saturday morning everyone meets up at the Walmart parking lot.  I saw this a week or so ago and had thought it was a school type "trunk" sale.  One of the customers came in the store saturday and told me it was the online yardsale swap spot.  Anyone done this?

Garage Sales / My first sort of yard sale.
« on: July 01, 2012, 02:42:07 PM »
I purchased 3 units and my daughter 2 in the month of June.  So I was a very inventory rich person when I added all of the units to our yard sales picking.  So I decided on monday I'd try and sell this weekend as most people in our area were getting paid friday the 29th.  However, like many others we saw record temps friday with forcast of even hotter temps Saturday.  So I debated about going to the flea or not.  Instead, I took a page out of our regular posters here.  My friend has a thrift store that I've helped out at, sold a few things to/thru, etc.  I asked them if they would mind me setting up Saturday as a yard sale in the corner of the parking area.  She said sure - so I gave them $15 and wrote up a contract to cover them in case the tax man came around.  Wanted to make it clear there was a distenction between the store / my stuff.  Figure if there was no customers or just very slow I could duck into the store to cool off.  No AC really but they have a portable unit that works great.  As it turns out I and the store were very busy.  I have many items the store didn't and even brought in people who had not stopped at the store before.  My only advertisement was a CL post at 8 or so friday night.  After expenses I made $390, daughter $51, and then another $40 in shared sales w/ the store (my items they sell and we split 50/50).  So it was a great if extremely hot day.

If they go for it again I may just pick one weekend a month and sell at the thrift of Saturday and flea on Sunday.  I made a bunch more at the thrift.  Don't know if it was just the certain items I had or what.  I do know some of it was due to less competetion.  Even sold many items that had not sold at the flea.

Flea Markets / First weekend of the month.
« on: May 04, 2012, 06:40:12 PM »
So who all are hitting up the flea this weekend?  I'm going to try something new and hit the twice a year yard sale/flea market at our local army fort.  I will either make a good amount of money or be flat broke.  Fee was $45 for a drive-up spot.  They have 320 spots for sale and I think they are sold out.  I'll be doing some picking I'm sure while I'm there.

Flea Markets / Military Post Flea Market
« on: March 20, 2012, 06:35:22 AM »
Has anyone tried the semi-annual flea market that most military post have each spring / fall?  Just saw advertisement for the one near me.  Cost is much higher then normal flea but I wonder if traffic is higher also.  10x10 spot, corner spot is $55, outside drive-up and park $45 (one I'd get), and inside isle spot is $30.

I remember doing this one year when I was young and father was in the army.  So I know the crowds can be large.  Plus it's the first weekend of the month - so military will be paid.

General Storage Auction Talk / Always check those trash bags out!
« on: March 17, 2012, 12:55:33 PM »
Was a nice day today and the auctions were over way to quick.  So I decided to put up the sun shade and work on cleaning out my sorting area shed.  I had piled trash bags upon bags up underneath my sorting table.  I knew it was cloths/linens that I just didn't feel like messing with at the time.  Some of these bags have been sitting there for months.

Found a bunch of trash, 2 totes worth of jeans / kids-cloths to keep and sale.  In the mix was 4 boxes of cloths to donate to Goodwill.  At the bottom of some of the bags I'd pull out a few pennies, letters, or some trash.  However, I also found in my next to last bag a herringbone necklace.  It's only .925 sterling silver but is worth $27 at current spot price.

If I had just figured all junky, moldy cloths I'd of been tossing out money.

Willow Tufano is only 14, but she's already accomplished something many adults dream of. She's a homeowner! She got her start selling things she found on Craigslist and worked her way up to being able to buy a house!

This yahoo article made me think of you MovieMan.  Guy made $10,000 on eBay by doing the same things MovieMan and I'm sure others of us here do.  Looking for cheap items to re-sell on ebay.

The Lounge / No auction place is safe.
« on: February 11, 2012, 07:29:46 AM »
Was just doing some other auction searches since was up early before the caravan today.  I came upon two new auction shows.  These are for unclaimed baggage at airports.  I had known about these types of auctions from father working a contract with TSA.  Had never been to one since closest major airport for me is Atlanta.  The airports normally send the luggage to a distribution center.  Sort of the same thing like what they do with all the confisicated items.  Anyways - I saw a "Baggage Wars" article on one of the storage auction sites.  Then I came upon this article for baggage battles: http://tvpressfeed.com/2012/02/baggage-battles-to-premiere-april-11-on-travel-channel/.

Flea Markets / Weekend Sales (1-28-12)
« on: January 28, 2012, 05:20:34 PM »
Since I'm going to be out of town next weekend and not able to sell I figured I would give this weekend at the flea a try.  Weather was going to be mid 60s, sunny, with wind of 5-10 mph.  Only had a few times with wind, and temp was nice.  Crowds were heavier then I expected.  I ended up with my 2nd best single day.  Didn't get rid of a ton of new inventory but got rid of some odd shape items that don't fit in totes well.

Big hits were:

.25 bucket
.50 bucket
world coins

Also traded 2 items that hadn't sold in 3 months for some brand new gas stove grates.  These things are heavy cast iron and worth scrap if can't sell them.  Bout to check fleabay.

Picker's Paradise / GovDeals.com
« on: January 19, 2012, 10:15:15 AM »
Well I've switched up some and decided to try for some local gov surplus auctions in my area.  Just put in a $30 bid on the following 10 bikes.  If don't win for the $30 not bidding any higher.  Just tossing a "feeler" out to see if can get something cheap.  Even needing repair can get both parts, scrap, and good about 3-5 good bikes out of that lot.

You are bidding on an assortment of bicycles in various conditions (from poor to fair condition)with 1- 26" NEXT, 1-Huffy-Sea Star (20"), 1-20" Ambush (gold), 1-Giant, Yukon 26", 1-Nemesis 20", 1- 26" Roadmaster, 1- 24" Ozone, 1-Huffy 26", 1-26" Giant Simple Cruiser, and 1-26" Schwinn-Meridian. All bikes are in need of repairs and some may only be good for parts. The winning bidder gets all bikes. We do not know the working condition of these bikes so they are sold as is and where is. Bidders are encouraged to inspect this lot.

Wish was up in Atlanta - see a few good auctions up there.  $12 for 3 good size AV carts.  Those do well for showing off items at the flea and vendors love them to move things in and out of their shop for display.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Digging in locker story time.
« on: January 18, 2012, 07:23:30 AM »
Since we have so many new members to the board (again).  I figured I'd share some of my discoveries of late.  I was cleaning out my sheds of boxes from units that I bought and just tossed here and there.  Plus, cleaning out my latest purchase.  Here are some of the things I have for my trouble.

1) Trailer full of trash, not counting the 2 boxsprings and 2 matress ($20 to dump)
2) Sold particle board dresser w/ gash on side (they didn't want the mirror) - $50
3) New unit has lots of kitchen items - full drawer of forks, knives, spoons.  Block w/ knives, etc.
4) George Formen Grill, Iron
5) Glasses and Tupperware
6) Knick nacks and figurines
7) Box of same from above wrapped in bubble wrap, tissue, etc.  Get all excited and find they are the dollar tree crap.  Who wraps up $1 ceramic figurines.
8) 2002 Class Ring - no stone.  Got all excited when first saw the ring.  However, it's not stamped 10k or anything and is a poor school.  So 98% sure it is nickel-chromium aka Josten's Lustrium.  Keep getting close to jewelry but still a no-go for me.
9) 4 napkin rings that look to be sterling-silver.  Need to have these checked.
10) Cloths, cloths, and more cloths
11) Curtins, blinds, and some other odds and ends.
12) Glass table top and 4 matching chairs  -- this will be what pays for the unit or not.

That is about it for my first two weeks of the new year.  Most of the cloths are set to be donated to Goodwill.  Just put all the glass and kitchen stuff up till March.

So what all have ya'll found so far this month????

Flea Markets / First weekend of the year
« on: January 06, 2012, 12:08:39 PM »
Well I just reserved a booth at the flea market for Saturday.  Kept waffeling back and forth if should go.  Weather has been in the 30s - 40s but is suppose to be in upper 60s, almost 70 with 5-10 mph winds and 20% chance of rain.  My luck it will rain all dang day.

Anyone sold at the flea at start of a new year right after xmas?  Will report back Saturday night on how well did or didn't do.

Place wasn't sold out so this may be a lost cause.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Year End Report - 2011
« on: December 31, 2011, 07:02:09 PM »
Well as the end of 2011 gets closer and closer I decided to finish up my last calculations.  Only purchased 1 unit this month for $150 ($160.50 w/ tax).  Sold a vehicle AC freon draw-down system or what ever it's called to him for $200.  Still have a car part that guy bidding against me wanted and few other items from the locker.  So will make some money.  However, one big mistake wipes out everything for the year.

16 Units Purchased for the yar.
$1964.50 spent
$1239.73 items sold / cash / same-as-cash items (gift cards, stamps, etc.)

So ($724.77) in the red.

Kept just under $400 worth of stuff for myself, kids, family.  Have a bunch of inventory still for spring flea market.  Not counted all the items I took to Goodwill for the tax write-off.  So not a great first year for this auction buyer.  Looking forward to 2012.

Have a Happy New Years Ya'll!!!!!!

eBay / Ebay Buyers to Beware???
« on: December 09, 2011, 06:10:08 PM »
Many sites have a section or thread of buyers / sellers to be watchful of due to bad practice, bad expierence, or such.  So I figured it was time to start one here.  For all you sellers out there - have you run into a buyer that is jacking you just because they can do it?

Other Forms of Selling / Taking Credit Card Payments
« on: November 22, 2011, 07:57:09 PM »
Was looking at the black friday ads and saw the credit card reader plugin & app for sale for 9.99.  Has anyone ever thought about accepting CCs at a yard sale or flea market to increase sales?  Even with the % the company takes for themselves would it be worth it?

I'm gun shy about something like this.  Just to afraid people would buy the items and then dispute the charge later.  Even with signatures and maybe a picture of the transaction I would think it's more trouble then worth.

thoughts?
