New to Storage Auctions? / Research research research
« on: November 15, 2011, 10:29:39 AM »
I've been doing storage lockers since June and still consider myself a noob.  There is just so much that I don't know.  A good example is a locker that had a ton of cloths in.  I've not even started to sort the 4 huge boxes and multiple bags of cloths that I have.  I did quickly pull out a bunch of silk ties to try and sale at the flea for $1 each.  I may could of made a huge mistake.  Today I did some research via google and ebay on a couple of the ties / name brand.  One is by a company called Next Exit.  The tie is currently sitting on ebay for $18.98.  I didn't think ties would sale but this seller has sold 1000s of them in pre-owned condition.  So if I can take the exact same tie and sell it for $10 I've already made $9 more then I was going to at the flea.

Name brands that I have in this box are: Rene Chagal, Eagovalle, Next Exit, and Aries.  There are more that I've not looked at yet.  Some of the ties are in bad shape with the stitching coming out with others still in great shape.

So word of advice to other noobs from an older noob.  Take the time to research each item that you find and don't know much about.  Even if you think it is only a $1 item you may be surprised.

Garage Sales / Yard Sale Prices
« on: October 22, 2011, 06:34:18 PM »
My daughter should be done with soccer and everything else on the weekends at the end of the month.  So I'm hoping to do our first yard sale to unload all the inventory I've gotten in the last two months.  I have a ton of cloths, books, music items (Cds, tapes, and records), VHS tapes and DVDs, and all sorts of odds and ends.  I was wondering what some of you price your stuff at?  I was thinking for myself in a town outside of a city next to a military base I'd use the following:

older paperback books - $.50
newer paperback books - $1
VHS / tapes / records - $.25
CDs - $1
DVDs - $1 - $5
baby cloths - $.50
kids cloths - $1
adult cloths (shrits) - $2
adult cloths (pants) - $4

Just some general ideas.  Figure if I can come up with a general price list it would save me time from trying to mark everything w/ a price.  Things like the furniture, weapons, and such I'd price seperate.  Figure if I make $200 I'm doing great, $400 would put me back in the black even after keeping a ton of stuff.

The Lounge / Beckett Online Price Guide
« on: September 26, 2011, 07:30:42 PM »
Does anyone use the beckett online price guide subscription service?  I have a ton of old baseball and racing cards in my own collection.  Then have found a number of comic, baseball, basketball, and various other cards in a unit.  I have no clue what is good and what is not.  So thought about getting a listing together and checking online.

Big question is can you export your "organize" list from beckett with prices?  Do you think it's worth the $31 a month for total access?  Can you do any uploads?

Stories about Storage Auctions / Unit #3 & #4 down (pics)
« on: September 25, 2011, 02:49:52 PM »
This was a week of a few first in my short storage auction buying so far.
My first true bust it looks like.
My first doing a recover property report with the police.  (found 4 SSN cards and 3 debit type cards all with different names and such from the person that owned the locker).
My first on-site deal to make some cash back after a sale.

This past Monday found myself and daughter heading to one of the two caravan auctions each month in my area.  I love this guy as he holds his auctions later in the day after I get off work so it's easy for me to attend.  The afternoon started off bad.  On way to the auction we both watched a SUV loose control and cut into the median from the other side of the devided highway and roll.  Very nasty wreck, everyone stop to help, and think the lady lived.  Once police and EMS got on the scene I got back in my truck to hurry to the auction.

First facility had 13 units listed in the paper and was down to 5.  Crowd was about normal for this place with mostly regulars.  A few newer faces but still only about 20 people in all.  Prices were fair for the units seen.  Then we get to the last unit for this location.
MondayAAA004

I bid up to $300 for the unit and stopped.  Just wasn't sure if any more then that was worth the gamble.  Unit finally sold for $480 or so I think.  Will have to check my notes.

Second facility was more of the same as the first.  A few $10 units.  Once my daughter said she would of bid on and I said go ahead but you must do the work to clean, sort, etc.  Thinking of all the cloths in this unit (could only see cloths in a 5x5) she passed.  Another unit like that first 5x5 went for $75.  A bunch of the regulars were going "did we miss something" as they were teasing my daughter that unit was for her.

The third and last facility of the caravan is where purchased my third and fourth unit.  Got outbid on a few others I had bid on as they went past my max.  Anyways - the first unit I purchased didn't look like much.  Had a old computer, tv, table, odds and ends, and a juicer in the box.  Also had a bike with no seat and 3 scooters.  I opened the bid for $10, lady that was new bid $20, our resident DH...aka Mr. Five bid his "five" for $25, and I jumped it to $35.  No one else wanted it so got the unit for cheap.
ThirtyFiveUnit

Doing a quick search we found a N64 with all the controllers and cables (no games).  Also, various medical devices such as a nebulizer, new diabetic testing strips, and 3 testing devices.  No idea what I'm going to do with that stuff.  Though with a new tube and such the nebulizer does work.  I put the juicer up on CL at $75 to start.  It's retial was $189 from the home shopping network.  If get even $35 for it I'll of broken even and be happy.  Kids kept the two good scooters.  Other one is going to my scrap pile.  Bike I'm waiting to see if can find a seat in next month or so to sell around Christmas.

We see a few more units but nothing that catches my eye till the last unit of the day.
MondayAAA022
MondayAAA021

This unit was old looking.  I saw lots of spider webs, dust, etc.  I also saw a fridge (been looking for a godo 2nd one for house), a vac, a steam vac (also need), mid size TV, DVD/VCR combo, some cloths, and other boxes.  So I was interested in this unit.  Bid starts out at $50 and I jump in with $75.  It gets to $175 and the lady bows out.  Then Mr. Five comes in and starts to bid.  We get to $220 when it dawns on me I know what Mr. Five wants.  He wants the furniture and I hate furniture for the most part.  While I have the room to store it I don't mess with it right now due to time and such.  So I turn around and ask "You wanting the furniture right?  $50 and it's yours".  Mr. Five is a regular and has seen me these last few months around.  Him and I have talked and bantered in the past in a friendly way.  So he was a little surprised but said ok.  I was a little surprised as he gave me the $50 right then and there w/o a truck and such.  I cleaned out the locker and stopped at the thrift store he buys for to drop of a copy of my key.  So he stopped bidding on the locker, I made a quick $50 so the unit cost me $180, and we both were happy.

This unit however is going to be my first true lost I think.  The large tv worked but the top edge of screen makes everyone look like eggheads.  The vac has a bunch of busted and cracked hoses.  Not tried to turn it or the steam vac on yet.  Was mostly interested in the fridge and boxes, and why I was going to bid up to $250 for the unit.  Found out the boxes are ALL cloths.  The outside of the unit to me looked like an apartment type unit or downsize.  I was wrong.  It seems while I was right the unit was old (Sept 2005 newspaper) the people had a major fire or something.  The fridge doesn't seem to work.  Found a 150 watt 4 channell amp and 3-way crossover but they are from like 1997 and don't know if they work.  Most everything else is cloths.  So unless I can sell $180 in cloths this will be my first real loss.  Some of the cloths are nice, however much they are wrinkles.  Many are too far stained and such to be worth anything.  Oh well, hope to have better luck next week or month.

Stories about Storage Auctions / First Lockers Purchased (w/ pics)
« on: September 12, 2011, 08:37:20 PM »
Thursday Sept 8th found my wife and I out and about at a 7 facility 30 listed unit auction.  The starting crowd was moderate with many of the regulars from both sides of the river.  Only had a few newbies at the first site.  As the day progressed we had more and more newbies and a few of the regulars dropped out.  One had a doctor appointment, another quit as it was time for lunch, etc.  Most of the regulars are retired and do this as a means to keep busy, etc.  Only one of the store owner regulars stayed with us.  Prices were moderate, with only one high price due to a 10 x 20 packed full to the rafters with stuff.  This was a whole family type unit and sold for $910.

Today was also the day I popped my cherry and won not one but two units.  I also learned a few things about my wife.  First she enjoyed herself dispite my fears.  The second is she is the reason I purchased the second unit and lost a third :).  We had bid on a unit that was full, had a dirt devil and bissel vac showing, lots of boxes, and a side by side fridge.  I had just been outbid at $250 when she nuddged me.  I thought that meant to stop...when in fact it was to keep going.  Go figure.  Later in the day I saw a unit I was interested in that she stopped me on at $160.  Didn't feel bad at getting outbid as the guy was pretty cool and we talked about the unit afterwards.  He is going to tell me how it goes later next week.

The first unit we won we wanted it due to the major item it had in it.  This is something that our daughter has been wanting and retails for $200-300.  I should of gotten the unit for $50 but got bid up by one of the newbies that I called Gypsy.  She even tried to claim at the end that she had the high bid since we were side by side in the hall in front of the unit.  The auctioneer knew better and so raised my bid by $10 more.  I was pissed at the lady and not the auctioneer since it was still below my max.  Later in the day she asked me "Where do you find all these auctions" and my answer was Google being a smart ass.  One of the regulars was even more general and just said the internet.

Guitar
Guitar2
Guitar3

So this unit cost me $185.  The guitar in the picture retailed for $250-$275 new.  I only found one used on ebay for $150.  So I think it was a good buy.  My wife also kept a short-sword that sort of looks like a ninja sword.  My daughter pulled out a pair of mid-heel leater boots that she liked.  The owner was a pot head.  Other then the smell of some of the boxes I also found the arrest warrent, property evidence paper, etc. from the police.  So the unit contained a number of lighters and ashtrays.  Also found in the unit was a blue lightning sphere buddah, 2GB Ipod Nano, leather blackjack, brass knuckles, S&W .40 clip (father got), ton of burned music CDS, some legally purchased CDs, playstation games, etc.  So I have a number of $1 - $5 items for a yard sale or flea market.  If the items I put up on craigslist actually sale I'll break even just from that.  Time will tell.

The second unit we won was all furniture except for a few boxes in the inside corner with cloths and a lock box in the back corner.  In the pictures you see it on the china cabnit top but it was actually in the back left corner.

furniture2
furniture3
furniture4
furniture5

I paid $170 for this unit.  My wife liked this unit for those chairs/table in the back.  I normally stay away from furniture units.  However, I saw the furniture was "Rockingham" stuff, and thus solid wood.  So I figured I could sale the table, two chairs, and china cabinet for $200 or more easy.  In fact one of the regulars that took off to another auction asked me how much I wanted for the furniture Friday when was telling him about it.  While I could of made some money I didn't.  My mother loved the china cabinet and my father liked the table.  He is going to sand and re-finish it.  The metal table and chairs went to my wife of course.  The rocking chair and particle board desk (very heavy) went to my kids for furniture in their play room.  The only thing I have to sale out of the unit are the cloths, pillows, and a few pairs of shoes.  So those are in my yard sale bin currently.

As for the lock box.  Like 80% of them it only had papers in it.  While they are important papers they do me no good and thus was returned to the facility.

Overall it was a long but fun day.  I hope for some better lockers in my price range next week when hit a three facility caravan on Monday 19th.

eBay / Ebay Shipping via USPS Flat Rate
« on: September 02, 2011, 04:53:53 PM »
Ok - maybe I'm just being dense here so come to ask for help.  I was going to try and sale some unopened software I have (WOW BC Collector's Edition).  In the past I've always used priority shipping.  Started to work on the listing and got to the shipping part.  Did flat rate - Priority mail med box.  The max ebay will let me charge for shipping is $4.00.  WTH is that?  Is there a setting or something I need to change since not done ebay in years?  Cost for a flat rate box is 10.95.

Was going to do the calculate shipping but then depending on where buyer is at the rate would be different.  I wanted it to be a flat rate.

Suggestions or hints from ya'll that do Ebay all the time?

Stories about Storage Auctions / Auction #2 and 1st Caravan
« on: August 23, 2011, 01:14:10 PM »
Well monday has come and gone and I have another auction under my belt.  This was a 3 facility caravan with a heavy mix of regulars.  When I first arrive there is only a few trucks waiting around.  About 10 mins before the auction everyone else shows up.  All the regulars quickly form a circle in the shade joking around and such.  So I go over and say hello and to get a feel for the crowd.  I asked was I the only noob here and was told no, looks like about 4 new people today.  Most of these guys are retired and older.  I was the young guy being in my late 30s.  While talking and listening I learned who the high roller was.  Of course him driving up in a escalade also pointed to it.  So 4pm hits and the owner of the facility is ready to get started.  He had us noobs sign-in but that was all.

Rules at this facility are simple.  Cash only, and clean the unit completly or don't bother coming back.  No deposit required.  He takes offers to start the bid.  A few things surprised me.  The first was how laid back everything was.  Everyone joking around and such.  Even when bidding against each other.  Second was the ability to go in the lockers and really look around.  The third was I was the only one with a large flashlight.  Most of the regulars didn't have one or a few had small 3 LED lights.  In one of the units I allowed a few of the vets to use mine.  Here is the break down of units / bids.

First and second unit was mostly empty with a couch, matress, and a few containers.  Both went for $25 each.  Third unit had 3 toolboxes, some speakers, a truck toolbox, etc.  One of the best units we saw so far.  It sold for $155.  The fourth unit surprised me.  It was a big 10 X 20 or more, but mostly empty.  The owner told us to come in and look behind the furniture and such.  This is where the good stuff was hidden.  A nice guitar, keyboard, and a few other things.  I bid up to $150, but the unit sold at $165.  The last unit at this facility went for $5.  It was a large unit but was very disorganized and looked like a ton of work for nothing.  I saw a few item that would of sold but like the veterans I wasn't up to the amount of work for the little profit (if any after dump fees) I saw.

The second facility had some units on paper I was really interested in.  The first two were closet size units.  The first went for $220 and had a single snare drum showing and alot of other junk.  The second unit with I was interested in sold for $350.  It had a guitar, a violen, and after it sold found out a clarinett (spelling) all in the unit.  The first large packed unit we came to sold for $550 to a young guy with some deep pockets.  Found out he has a thrift store or something and is always looking for furniture, etc.  Last unit at this facility sold for $45.  It had a little heater, headboard with mirror and a window AC unit.

Last facility of the day had a little larger crowd.  A few of the guys from the Army base showed up to also bid.  The bids at the last facility were either high or low.  First unit went for $320, the second for $100.  Here again we ran into a large unit filled with stuff.  Had a washer, dryer, tv, fridge, etc.  It sold for $550 also to the same guy as above.  The fourth unit we called the scrapyard special.  It was trashed.  It had a matress & boxspring with a huge hole in the middle.  A stove that was 1/2 stripped, some wire hangers, and a object that caused all sorts of jokes....a kitchen sink.  This unit went for $10.  People just didn't want to hassle with it, even for the scrap.  The next unit was filled with furniture and a box of DVDs.  None of the regulars wanted it.  Open bid was $10, I said $20, army said $30 and I was like have it.  I had to laugh when his buddy was like "WTF did you just buy...look at all that stuff".  Last unit of the day was nice.  Had a Dale Jr. cardboard cutout, tools, etc.  Was a man's locker.  It sold for $420.

Storage Auctions "In The News" / Auction Hunters Season 3
« on: August 16, 2011, 05:13:21 PM »
I'm more then a month and half late but found out there will be a season 3.  Is suppose to also have a "LIVE" episode.  Now that one will be interesting if it really is live and not edited like normal.  I thought interest in these shows was going down.

26
Went to my first auction today with my daughter and father.  While I checked out the unit my daughter would take notes of the winning bids, etc.  I figured with a saturday it would be packed and I was right.  There were 100+ people there and over 60+ registred bidders.  Only about a dozen people actually placed any bids.  I would say there were 5-8 regulars.  One guy bought 6 of the lockers.  He also knew a few of the other guys that were there.

This was the first time this place has had an auction.  It's also the first time the auctioneer had done a storage locker and it showed.  First 4 auctions everyone crowded around the door insted of making a line.  Finally the owner I guess he was told everyone if they don't form a line he wasn't going to open another door.  Things got straightened out little more then.

Here is a picture of part of the crowd.
Auction Crowd" width="500" height="375
There were 18 lockers that went up for sale this morning.  A few of the units that were in the paper were paid off and pulled.  Including the one I was really interested in with outdoor equipment and tools.  Here is a look at the first locker B046 a 10x20.
Locker" width="500" height="375
Locker" width="500" height="375

The units went for fair prices I think.  The one pictured above went for $47.

This unit with the boots went for $80.

The highest priced unit was this packed one near the end of the day.  This unit fetched $310.

Locker" width="500" height="375

Breakdown of all the lockers was like this:
B029 Teeter-W/D, Outdoor Equipment, Tools  ---- paid up and pulled
B046 Morris-Furn., Boxes, Ice Chest, Stuff Animals --- $47
C073 Foster-Boxes, Furniture, Baby Supplies  --- $275
C077 Horsby-Boxes, Furniture  ---- paid up and pulled
E165 Carpenter-Boxes, Furniture, Jewelry  ---- $115  (this one looked staged.  table, few others items up front with a jewelry box and all the costume jewelry laying out.  Empty boxes behind.
F195 Corley-Furniture, Crafts, Books  -- $80
F196 Thomas-Mattresses -- $1  (was twin box spring / matress in bad shape)
F199 Callahan-Clothes, Boxes, Mis. Goods  -- $100
F201 Stannford-Mattress, TV, Boxes, Storage Tub -- $210  - had a 40inch TV, 3 matresses, few totes, and a number of trash bags.
G300 Tony-Boxes, Carpet, Suitcase -- $90
G309 Jones-Clothes, Chairs, Books -- $35  - piled high w/ nothing but cloths that you could see.  One fuse box like for a AC unit in corner.  Think this one was a steal for the regular that got it.
G315 Jones-Clothes, Furniture, Mis. -- $310
H368 Blake-Furniture, Microwave -- $80

The additional units went for 60, 80, 65, 45, 65.  Daughter may of missed one or two I'm not sure.  One unit had a gun case in it but it was cracked open so could see nothing was in it.  Another unit had a blue fire box which I bid up to $60 bucks on but went for like $80.  Didn't really feel like gambling just for a empty fire box and was an hour away from the house.  So would of had to make a return trip to yank all the crap particle board and matress that was also in there.

I know this was my first auction but I had a number of people asking me questions.  It's like none of them did any homework.  They wanted to know why I had a flashlight, how I got the listing of contents, etc.  Was a little strange.  Also, this place would let you leave and hit the ATM if you purchased a unit and was short which I thought was strange.  You had till midnight to settle up your account.

For more pictures you can check out the ones I loaded up to flicr.

New to Storage Auctions? / Beware or Not???
« on: August 12, 2011, 04:26:00 PM »
Ok, plan to hit a storage auction that is about an hours drive from me.  From reading their local paper they have the following:
B029 Teeter-W/D, Outdoor Equipment, Tools
B046 Morris-Furn., Boxes, Ice Chest, Stuff Animals
C073 Foster-Boxes, Furniture, Baby Supplies
C077 Horsby-Boxes, Furniture
E165 Carpenter-Boxes, Furniture, Jewelry
F195 Corley-Furniture, Crafts, Books
F196 Thomas-Mattresses
F199 Callahan-Clothes, Boxes, Mis. Goods
F201 Stannford-Mattress, TV, Boxes, Storage Tub
G300 Tony-Boxes, Carpet, Suitcase
G309 Jones-Clothes, Chairs, Books
G315 Jones-Clothes, Furniture, Mis.
H368 Blake-Furniture, Microwave

However, when I just called them to check to see how many units they were down to she said they had 18.  They added a few of their own.  So now I'm like....hmm did they just stage a bunch of units or what is the deal.  The place was recently purchased and the name changed.

New to Storage Auctions? / Washer / Dryer and other scrap metal
« on: August 10, 2011, 04:30:27 PM »
I know scrap yards will take copper, steel, and the like.  But do they pay for washer / dryers and the like?  Keep trying to call my local scrap yard but never get an answer.  Do you get more money as a unit or if you take them apart.

Anyone have any luck at this?  I've read many threads where people find washer/dryers and such.  If they don't work what do you do with them?
