In my area it's "swept clean".  I have a big industrial push broom that I use.  My buddy has a battery powered blower that he uses.  Now - there is one place that charges a deposit and then wants not just the unit "dust free" but then tries to have you clean the front walk of the unit.  Saying you just pushed out all the dust into the drive path that they now have to clean.

I suspect another 2-4 season, so year half - 2 years.  Even as the ratings fall unless they have something else in the wings they will squeeze out another season or two.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: What is it about Fridays?

Friday's are also a major auction day in my area.  Plus, on friday I'm ready for the weekend and not surfing the web at work as much ;)

A flat 10% fee will make calculating the fee simple enough...

Even with the increase there are some things I can sell on ebay for more then local even with free shipping and all the fees.  Example was a Korea War era BAR magazine belt.  Multiple people wanted it but not for more then $5 as one pouch had a tear.  I sold it on ebay for $40.  Even after shipping, ebay and paypal fee I'll have made 4x what they offered local.

We have many people that come into my buddies store that re-purpose, re-finish, etc. things.  We have sold busted furniture for $50 - $100 that they redo and re-sale for 2-3x the money.  People love us as we have fair prices and don't get mad if you buy from us and re-sale for more profit.  There are even a few thrift stores that buy stuff from us.  Now - these types people don't get any discount.  What you see on the sticker is what you pay.  But they can still turn some profit.

Any solid wood stuff moves easy - no matter the condition.
Old wood skies (not fiberglass) we have been asked for several times.
Any old plow parts sale well.

I just sold a small dresser w/ a big hole in side where someone kicked it for $10.  Lady just needed a cheap dresser for some kids cloths.

I've not heard of someone that has not paid for a unit they won in my area.  Most of the units go to regulars who stay in budget.

As for the "abandoned" type units - most of the time those get combined with other units and sold.  Now, I have won 4 units before and offered to clean out the 2 no-sales since I was already at the location anyways to build up some good relations.  Normally all of the trash units sale for $1 or $5 to someone who is already there.  Then the associated cost is low.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Got "stung" picking today

I've been stung like that a few times last year at yard sales.  Yes - that weed eater works I just don't have any gas.  $15 later and gas in tank...pull...pull...pull - spark plug...pull...pull...pull  -  well crap.

Is nice when you have the reverse of that.  Lady sold me a mower that wouldn't work for $10.  Clean filter, put in a new spark plug, gas - wham $150 sale later - we have lunch money.

I've learned to try and test everything on the spot.  Don't care how many bibles you swear on.  Is why we test before bring things in the store, and before it leaves.  Have had a few items (like vcr, dvd player, etc) that worked when tested it.  To crap out on us and look bad when we are about to sale it.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Has anyone made any good picks lately?

Had my first good yard sale pick of the year.  Found a small silver jewelry box.  About 4x3x1 inches in size.  Figured it was silver plated.  Asked how much and lady said $.50.  I couldn't pay her fast enough.

Get in the truck and take a better look.  Is a silver-nickle plate like I thought.  Is the Poole Silver Co out of Mass.  Year - 1894.  Yes - I just found a antique item for $.50.  Quick check on ebay finds simular boxes with complete bids over $100.

Wife of course called dibs on it when got back to the house.  It's now on the "history desk" with her megladon teeth, fossiles, etc.

I am kicking myself now as the lady had some flatware just tossed in it's case.  I figured it was plated and she would want $50+ for it.  Specially since she had told a lady $45 for a doll she had in her hands.  Now I'm wondering how old that flatware would of been, if it was pure silver, or what.  Should of asked.

Ya Movieman - I have 3 main auctions I like to attend.  The 7 facility thursday one, 3 facility saturday, and 3 location monday one.  This month is just not going to be my month.  The 7 facility was a complete bust for me as far as buying.  Saturday you know about already.  The monday 25th I'm going to have to skip.  Wife has a PT appointment that day so I'll have to get the kids.  Then rain this saturday so a good yard sale picking day out the window.  Plus side - gives me more time to clean out old inventory / get organized....ya right.

I still have a few decent days with my DVDs but not like I did even last year.  Most people have gone to blueray since the price of those players are so cheap.  Not finding many movies in that format yet, but am starting to see a few signs.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Don't make the classic Newbie mistake!

Well I know that I do try and check everything.  However, if I see a "made in china", etc. type mark it just goes into X pile quickly.  Those items that look old, unique, glassware is heavy, have specific logo, etc. do get checked.

The coffee cups I'd miss as 80% of the time they just go into some pile quickly.  The few I've looked up to see if are worth anything are selling on ebay for under $5 with free shipping.  So they go in the shop for $1.99 or less.

Saved my buddy the other day with some liquor glasses he had.  Saw the crown royal logo on them and looked them up.  Ebay was $8+ sold items.  He put them in the store for $5.99 instead of just $.99 each.

Lol - I started this a few weeks ago when a Sunday found a light breeze and low 70s.  Found a few boxes in the back fo the shed that I hadn't sorted yet.  Found a old metal desk that I sold the next day for $10.  A few other odds and ends.  Working on a nice big trash pile now - will be time to hit the dump next week.

Rain all this weekend so may just sit in the shed and sort / scrap some more.  I prob have $100 or more in electronic scrap I need to send out.  Getting a nice size stack of clean copper, alum heatsinks, etc.  All of this is part of my rainy day fund when low on money or want to take a vacation.

Already done one trip to Goodwill and have another truck/trailer full I'm sure of stuff.  Once done with that shed, I have 3 others and the house to do.

Well today was a complete bust.  23 units in the paper for my 3 facility auction.  Get there and we have 1 unit - and it was so/so.  1/2 empty with a washer covered up, small night stand, and a few boxes.  I didn't stick around as I knew my $53.01 bid wasn't going to win.

Well the feeding frenzy is here.  Thursday I took off from work for the 7 facility auction.  Something told me not to waste my day.  Anyways - 6 units at first location, 1 at second, 3 (was 4 at check in) at 3rd, and then single units the rest of the day.  We had a good 40+ people, with a few newbies mixed in.  Big newbie was this family (father, mother, twin boys, and another boy).  The "kids" were bidding on everything and just driven up the price.  They didn't win anything but can tell they had been watching the shows.  One of the twins even had a lock on either side of his zipper on jeans.

Anyways - prices were out of this world.  Only other drama we really had was one of the new regulars who has a store 30+ miles or so away.  One of the older returning regulars paid $600 for a unit, was told had a sister unit.  In the sister unit was the drawers for the chest, etc. and some boxes of toys in back.  I figured $50 and I'd give drawers to guy (semi-friends).  This newer guy jumps bid to $100 quickly and keeps going to a tune of $180.  Most of the regulars were pissed.  This is the same guy who last month bid up my daughter on a trash unit no one wanted just to "mess with her".  His stated purpose is to keep everyone "honest".  Think he is more pissed off that he doesn't win units and hauls his big truck and trailer 30+ miles each auction.  After these stunts he is going to get shut out IMO.

Buddy bought a inside 10x10 for $725.  Thought we had it at $500 until another newbie started to get in on the bidding.  He should still do well - I counted $1k easy if not more.  Just $250 or so profit vs a $500+ one.

Another auction on Saturday - silent.  Will see if my luck changes.  Yard sales are doing better for me.  $90 last week for a drop leaf table, 2 chairs, decorative water pitcher, and a hutch.  Sold the table/chairs that day for $90.  So the rest is profit.
