Craigslist / Re: Texting late at night.
« on: March 12, 2013, 07:02:55 AM »
I myself use the email method.  I can check it from phone, etc.  I get a bunch of "Is it still for sale".  Most of these are then auto-replied with some sob story or the other trying to get me to buy something, check this link, etc.  All of those get auto-trash.  If they respond again and it sounds like a real person then I'll setup a meet and give them my cell #.

Never really had a problem with spam.  I just turn on some specific keyword filters and never see the emails.  May have a false posative that gets deleted but oh well.  That is the risk I'm willing to take.

Most places around here don't.  However, every now and then one of the ladies will make cookies, a pound cake, etc. and put it on the counter for when we check-in.  I have bought a coke/water for 3 of the young ladies that run one of the saturday auctions.  For the most part the auctions don't last long enough to bother.  The caravan auctions we all sort of stop at the same gas station for coke/snacks and is the unoffical "break point" during the run.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: How do you sell art?
« on: March 12, 2013, 06:51:34 AM »
I wish you luck but I'm of no help to you.  Have yet to find any real "art work" in a unit.  Only painting I have now is of some sunflowers in a vase or something.  The painting is 4' square with a small round hole (3-4 mm).  Even at only $20 no one wants the dam thing.

I have found 1 other unit that had a oil painting in it by some artist I couldn't read.  That unit I bought just for the painting to put up in my house.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Jackpot ! Jackpot in the Safe ?

First I saw the title and was thinking - that is a blast from the past thread.  Then I did have to laugh Movieman when first started to read the post.  I got to a "just paid $1k for a lkr" and was like - huh....I missed that thread.  Then saw it was from 2011.

Still waiting for my major score like this.  Maybe in another 7 years and 350+ units to go I will.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: A TRUE "Mystery" Locker !
« on: March 11, 2013, 02:17:28 PM »
Yep - the bear didn't get me fully last month on my mystery unit but it took a good chunk of hide.  $315 spent for a 5 x 15 - could only see the matress blocking the view, dust, table legs sticking up, and nothing else.  Dust and cobwebs like this normally equals to a unit that has not been touched.  We were right on that and wrong on the "quality".  Will make 100-$150 of the money back but most of it was trash.  Once again I just had to shake my head at what people pay good money to "store".

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Cost of doing business
« on: March 11, 2013, 10:00:29 AM »
This is why I hate seeing low end / marginal (under $50) units at the start of an auction.  I only want those units when I already am coming to that location for a "real unit".  Then there is really very little associated cost with the marginal units.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #3...March, 2013

Missed the first auciton of the month today due to work.  Why people are starting to schedule meetings at lunch time is lunacy.  Do have my 7 facility auction next week.  Can't wait for it.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Storage Lockers Break-Ins
« on: March 08, 2013, 11:10:10 AM »
We will have a single unit break-in every now and then.  Last year we had one facility get hit by a group of thiefs, with over 60 units being hit.  In oct they sold out to U-haul.  Talked with the U-haul auction guy and he said their security was bad.  The door locks could just be jiggled loose with the lock still on them to open.  Everyone else is starting to "upgrade" security.

At the Barnyard, where I sell it is not a common thing.  Big reason is they have a patrolman that walks every booth.  Now, the other flea a mile up the road.  They are always getting busted there.  The rules there are very slim, no cop, no oversight, etc.  Pirated music, movies, porn to minors, etc. is always going on up there.  Barnyard table spaces are higher but they bring in larger crowds, more buyers, etc.

Flea Markets / Re: Do people at your flea market come before sunrise?
« on: March 08, 2013, 11:02:45 AM »
The buyers at dark / before open are mostly other dealers at my flea.  I know most of them and they always hit me up first thing in the morning.  I have no problem selling my stuff to them for my price.  If they want to jack it up more and re-sell it that is cool.  Had a few people get huffy when I wouldn't negotiate with them at 6:30 in the morning.

71
Nope - never around here.  If they did people would quickly leave the place.  Both buyers and sellers.  At our flea they make a mint from the table rent and the food sales.

72
Both of the flea's in my area are open Sat / Sunday.  One says they are open on Friday but it's normally only dealers stocking up getting ready for Saturday.  Customers are not really there except for on Sat/Sun.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Two Picks...Two Ships via U-Ship
« on: March 07, 2013, 09:30:24 AM »
Of course it is staged.  I looked at the website when the show first came on.  I do find it interesting to watch anyways.

Nice to hear this story MovieMan.  I've stayed away from large items due to shipping.  Since I'm near I-20 I wonder how some of my larger items would sell if did u-ship.  May have to look into it.

Other then some MJ seeds and unit smelling like it I've never gotten any illegal drugs so far (knock on wood).  Now - prescription drugs....if it was legal to re-sale those I'd of made a mint a few times now.  Sucks to toss out ashtma medicine that can cost $5 to $250 in the trash.  Just not worth the liability to give it away, and illegal to sale it.
