Flea Markets / Flea market prices
« on: January 20, 2012, 10:11:53 AM »
I m not here to complain or instigate an issue with you flea market booth owners or leasee.

Why is it every time I go into the flea market, the prices are full blown retail where i can get most of it new at the stores?

I dont get it.   ::)

If i do come across old stuff (appears old) but its reproduction and still at full blown retail?

that goes all over me.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Selling jewelry tip
« on: January 13, 2012, 12:46:47 PM »
okay,

rule of the thumb.
do not sell gold or silver to those people unless your in need of hard cash in a hurry.
You can sell your gold and silver in a one day listing.

what i ll do first,  invest in testing kits.

Get a silver testing kid (scratch and liquid tester) and same thing for gold.  Get all kinds of liquid tester for gold.

invest in a led lighted jewelry magnifying glass

then invest in a dwt/ounce scale.

I say 50 bucks for all of it from the bay.
when you sell your jewelry, you can appraise it yourself and describe it on ebay.  You will get 100% spot sometimes you ll go over to 125% spot instead of getting 65% spot from the jewelry stores or those buy gold/silver places.

trust me, it works.

for example.  I have a gold ring with ruby stone in it.

I weigh it, i put my weight down on paper.   I use the magnifying glass to see what kind of gold it is.  I see 14K.  then i go to this website - lets say the ring weighs 3 grams or 1.93 DWT

thats 91.75
goldcalc.com

throw it on ebay and say you can expect 80.00 for sure and it will stop at 80 or continue on after the 80.00 mark.

You also have to tell them that the weight is only gold, not ruby, thats excluded and is a bonus.

make it sound enticing and they sometimes will bid way over 80.00 because it has a ruby with it.

If you want to go overboard on your testing kit,  you might as well get a ring sizer so you can really decribe the ring in details.

Dave!!!   so he threw the inflatable doll in the trash bag he had lying around and moves up to the back and finds a box that is marked sterling, he opens it up and whole bunch of silver glimmer hit his eyes!   He says whoa!!  Score!!!!   then he humps his leg over a bunch of junk and walks to the truck in excitement.

me and my wife was at 2nd auction and i was fixing to bid on this 200 dollar locker, had deep freezer and among other things.  I couldnt tell if it was any good or not.  Looks borderline okay and junk.

my wife pointed out Mission of (my town)  which is a charity house in our town - magnet on the freezer and sticker on the chairs.  I finally see them and determined it was a junk buy (dumpster bound locker).

I waited till the guy paid and I asked him if i can look.  He was gracious enough and let me look deeper in the locker,  I couldnt find nothing that is worth mentioning.

I told him, good luck and was nice to him prior leaving.

Didnt even say its a junk locker or anything.  kept my mouth shut.

when i got in the car, i thanked my wife for noticing that magnetic sign and stickers.  that was a give away.

oh pardon me.  ;D

tell you the truth, im learning about antique furniture and beds.  I m going to come across a bunch of them from here on out.

I have a good solid background but still a little rough around the edges (clueless when it comes to antiques and furniture)  I have to learn what and how to spot good stuff from the bad.

this forum is awesome to bounce ideas around.

Welcome to this forum!

wait. wait.  dont go down to the scrap yard because they price it lower than anything to make it move.

trust me, I always go to my local scrap yard to pick up bmx bikes.  Out of 4 years, I paid maybe 100.00 and made 4k.

if you want to check prices, check ebay first.  If its not there, go into the front page, you ll see advanced, click on that and put what your looking for and find a box that says completed auction, check that.  Sometimes you ll get your idea of value.

if still cant find it,  go into google and type it up, on the left side, under everthing, click on image,  match up the pic with yours and if you find it, then click on the picture, sometimes it will take you to the site and show you what has been sold for.

dont be scared of the internet,  its your best friend.

The Lounge / Re: Real Deal TV Show (what the heck ?)

i watched 2 episode and I thought.  Man, this show is poorly written and its like watching those bend over for the dealers.

I couldnt stand watching it.

If it was me, I say, you pay me 2000 and if you dont like my price, then I ll take it somewhere else.

I wouldnt take it to an auction unless its buy it now on ebay.  I can wait and hold out for cash.

Its usually by research and years of experience in selling things.

When I was selling bmx bikes, I got to a point where I was selling parts at market prices.  I also did little bit of everything.

Dryers, Washers, dish washers, and wholly appliances.

I also sold silver, gold,  and materials.

I have made a rule of the thumb. -  if you dont know how much you ll sell it for, then dont touch it till you get a price background on it.

In texas,  Washers and dryers usually goes for 50-75 a pc.  but you dont know if its working or not.

Usually in storage, always count the items to be broken or incomplete.

for example.

an auctioneer opens a door and you see 4 sets of washer and dryers.

Now you quickly think in your head.  okay, i can sell each set for 150 (matching set) thats $600.00

but you dont know if it works or not.  keep in mind to keep your bid around 200.00 and stop there.

you have to give yourself maybe 150.00 in parts/labor to repair all of them.

thats 350.00 in appliances and repairs.

You ll make 250.00 if you hold your ground and dont let them lowball you.

like i said,  you have to have some experience in selling more than one item.

My family has been in the auctioneer business (storage and car auctions) all of their lives and they introduced me into this life when I was 6.

2 months ago, i just decided to jump heads in and go for it.  If you can see my signature, I think im doing good - So far  (knock on wood)

okay, back..

just cleaned it out.  what a long day.

I have 17  (50 lb) boxes of Lincoln Tig Welding rods.   (whew, that was heavy after 5 boxes and pulled a muscle in my back behind my lungs)  (i think i need to go work out -   :-X ) I looked it up on ebay,  80 dollars plus shipping per box.

Thats 1360.00 just for the welding rods.   :o  ;D

I have a Lincoln diesel Gas operated truck bed Welder / pipeliner cover -  i wish i have the whole thing,  its value is $16k

just have the cover and muffler.  Probably sell it for 250?   I cant get a value till i see one for sale.

$1500.00  ohhh nice..  that is what i paid last time, I paid 40.00 and got 1300.00.

I love making that kinda money.

 ;D

In the paper, it keeps saying baby clothes and baby chairs.  After a quick assement after winning the auction,  only one baby car booster seat.  thats it.

 ::)

but I think i ll do okay on this $60 dollar locker.

Loved your story movieman!   ;D

General Storage Auction Talk / small locker but scored a little
« on: December 30, 2011, 10:32:58 PM »
Went to my 4th auction today,

Right on Friday, 5 pm,  no one shows.   :o

I thought, yeah. Im gonna get this locker cheap cheap cheap.

Storage manager walks up and says, thats it - you and me.

he opens it and I look from the door line. hmm  I started the bid,  $25.  he looked at me and said, im going to bid too, he says $45, I say $60.  (fixing to walk away from it)

I was like.  (thinking in my head)  :o   can they bid on their own lockers?

got me reeling in and said again outloud , 60.00 and looked at him and said.  thats it.  im walking away,  he turned to me and said, sold for 60 dollars.

what the heck is what i said.

Is it legal for him to bid against me?  Then again, this auction was my first with lots of no show but me   ;D

anyways, got the locker but have not scoured through it yet.  Stay tuned for tomorrow.

I ll give you a hint.  a Krause multimatic ladder  $125 is what i can sell it for

a $300 dollar pancake air compressor.    :o  ;D

whole bunch of tin cans with filler welding tig rods (6 or 7 of them - full of new ones)  I can sell those for $25.00 5 lbs parcel.

maybe get $100 dollars out of it.

Dish/Direct tv boxes, satellites and couplers - ?  (real old)

huge, i mean huge extension cord.  the thickness of the cord was as big as my garden hose.   :o

I might can get $25-50 out of that.

but as far as small stuff, i have to go through it and see if i ll find something.
