eBay / Re: More eBay fees?????
« on: February 04, 2012, 10:36:49 AM »
I always end up with bigger stuff that doesn't manage to fit in any regular size box :)  I think I am going to have to start adding to the shipping as well.

Oh, if you are looking for good boxes, don't forget to check your local nursing homes! They have nice boxes with handles and some odd sizes that come in handy.

Craigs- I know you deal in coins, but can you give me any tips on finding out what medals are made of?  I have 4 Special Olympics medals from about 1985 or earlier. They are heavy, 3 are silver and one gold and a magnet does not stick to it.  I cleaned the silver ones with silver polish, and the rag turned black (but I have noticed it will do that on almost any medal). Any insight??

The strange part is this is the first time I have been charged this fee, I checked my listings for Dec and Nov.  I am still up in the air about the free shipping. I had something listed for $12 with free shipping. Watchers but no sale. So I relisted, dropped the price to $10 and calculated shipping. Item sold in the first day.

I am trying not to complain about the fees, as I know I can't get those prices anywhere else.

As I buyer I normally opt for Priority shipping.  I put different options in my listings, cheapest first. I am noticing many are choosing the priority anyway, too.  I also have to add .19 to the shipping if I list parcel post because of the extra fee for delivery confirmation.  One of these days I will figure it out..LOL

I am slowly but surely getting things listed. Oh how I wish I had more space so my dining room and front porch doesn't look like a hoarders house!!!

eBay / More eBay fees?????

I just checked my eBay seller account. Since when is there a fee on shipping costs???  Fee of  $1.62 on $14.77 shipping. Anyone else notice this? Sold the item for $35, which was an additional $3.85.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #2...February, 2012
« on: February 02, 2012, 08:02:15 AM »
There are absolutely no auctions in my area :(  In one local paper, there is a facility with listings almost every week about defaulted units. No current contact information for the facility, so I had to do a little digging. I end up calling the paper to see if they have any contact info and that I might know a defaulted renter. Lo and behold the owner calls me back. She tells me that they rarely sell off units, but takes my name and says "I can call you if we do decide to do anything with them". Even though the ads say "lockers up for public sale on such and such a date". I have even contacted facilities that state items will be disposed of on such and such a date, no luck.

All the auctions advertised are for like one or two lockers over an hour away. I cannot wait for spring!!

Anyone have any ideas on selling this? I did take off the duct taped label and cleaned it up a bit. I found one similar on eBay (1930's army foot locker, sold for $70). Mine only has one side handle, but everything is intact, even the inside shelf. Should I polish up the brass, etc or just leave it be??

The packaging and weighing I hate the most!!! I don't use flat rate though, maybe I should check into it.  I sell a lot of board games, so I got a package of the flat rate game boxes from the post office. I couldn't believe they were over $14 to ship!!! I haven't used one yet!

I made my fair share of shipping mistakes. One I did over Christmas and got burned because I forgot to check the "large package" box! Even though I had the weight and dimensions right, the calculator was messed up. The almighty eBay rating system made me suck it up and ship at a $20 loss. And to top it off, haven't received feedback for the item!!!

I have also been doing free shipping. Of course the price is added into the item, but I hate getting a lower star rating for shipping price when I am not the Post Office!!

I am in the process of listing stuff .... ugh, I look around and think where the hell do I start!!!

Craigs...the Breyer horses almost always sell on eBay. I had over 100 when I was a kid, wish I would have kept them.  Even if they are scratched or flawed, you can sell them. They "custom" paint them or warm them up and re-mold them.

Here's an example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/CM-Breyer-G1-SM-Stablemate-Dapple-Grey-MULE-CUSTOM-Made-OOAK-RESCULPT-/170754437622?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27c1c1f1f6#ht_500wt_1261   This is one of the small horses, not the traditional size.

Great idea Cobia. The husband can't seem to ever catch any fish, so I will just throw his stuff in...lol.  In doing more research, I am finding the stuff I didn't think would sell, is actually worth something. For instance, one of those floor to ceiling tension rod plant holders and wooden plant shelving unit. Those I am going to start at .99 and let them go.  Funny, all that crap I remember my mom having growing up is "vintage" and worth something. There were some pretty good books that would sell, unfortunately they stink like mildew. I put them in a bin with some of those rock things that absorb odor.  Hopefully that will work (the books are dry and in good shape otherwise).

There are a few other things I thought of throwing on "for parts".  After looking up some stuff, it gives me a whole set of new ideas as to what to look for at garage sales, etc!

Donations & Taxes / Re: Anyone been to Goodwill auctions?
« on: January 30, 2012, 08:35:11 AM »
I'm not sure how other areas are run...but in our Goodwills, the employees are not able to buy anything unless its been on a shelf for over a week. That doesn't stop them from having someone come in and buy it for them.  I remember once seeing an employee "hiding" things...couldn't figure out what the hell she was doing. Now I know  :-\

Tried looking up auctions around me, but our Goodwill stores only do the online auction. All the good stuff goes online (depending what you consider the good stuff is) but check this out:  http://www.nbc15.com/newsyoucanuse/headlines/Goodwills_Auction_Site_Tops_1_Million_Mark_In_Sales_138253929.html

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Returning personal items
« on: January 30, 2012, 08:30:08 AM »
Thanks for the input :) Seeing I have to return the pictures anyway, I am going to take ALL the paperwork too.  It would take me time to have it burned/shredded and I have spent far too much time the way it is.

The storage manager was pretty funny about it. She said "oh don't make a special trip to get it back here. Just bring it when we have our next auction". LOL

General Storage Auction Talk / Returning personal items
« on: January 29, 2012, 09:50:04 PM »
So I just got done going through everything out of the unit we bought.  Its a given that I am going to return all the pictures (ended up being a large suitcase, and 5 boxes full), college degrees, baby books, etc.

Here is my dilemma: How much do you really need to give back? I went through about 30 boxes of personal crap. These boxes looked as though they were damaged in a basement and then taken to storage. All the boxes were junk (and the smell was horrendous).  This lady had this storage locker since 2002. She relinquished the locker to the storage facility. conditions were pictures, personal items and some ceramic tree be returned. Found the tree (of course broken because it was just thrown into the locker, found it in the back under a bunch of crap) but it will be returned.

Personal items included all of her kids homework, artwork, etc. Mostly ruined. Receipts dating back to 1990.  I am going to burn all papers that have any SS#, and real personal info.  If I return ALL of the personal item, I pretty much paid for her back rent, cleaned out the locker and put all her crap in new boxes. To me, that is too much. I would need the truck to take it all back. The storage manager is pissed that the owner agreed to give back anything at all as the woman hasn't been in there in at least 2-3 years.

I think after all is said and done we will at least break even. Of course all those water damaged, disgusting boxes were first in the locker, so no way to see them on bidding. That's the chance you take.

There are taxes and stuff in there, ruined and stinking...but none later than 2001. So its beyond the 7 years you need to keep something. I think if the stuff meant that much, she wouldve come up with the money to get it out.

Am I wrong about not returning EVERYTHING personal? Most of the photo albums are junk because of water damage, but I am still returning them and the broken tree  ???
