Some people just get weird that way.  I think its a cool idea and your making a profit so all is good. Is she still selling them or just not to you?

Way to go, though!!!

Does anyone know about Special Olympic Medals? I have about 5 out of our last locker (I am still amazed at what was left in that locker).  These are probably 20+ years old and I can't figure out what they are made out of.

I did see a set of 3 listed on ebay for 19.99 that sold, but I cannot find any information about them.

Somethings I really hate to sell (memories, stories behind items, etc), but that's why we do it right?

Donations & Taxes / Re: Anyone been to Goodwill auctions?
« on: January 29, 2012, 10:38:14 AM »
How did you find out about the Goodwill auctions? I don't think they have them around here, at least not that I have seen.  I did see somewhere that there is like a headquarter store in some states that put everything in those wire bins and its pretty cheap. They sell by the piece or the pound.

Goodwill is bringing in some good stuff for me too. Ours finally has a policy that if something electrical doesn't work you can bring it back.

Do you have a St. Vincent De Paul store near you? Their prices seem to stay really low.  I don't buy clothes for resale, but they do have sportswear name brand jackets for $4. Another plus is they always check the electronic and electric things, so you know they work. There is one close to me that I almost always score some good things that make money.

Our SA are getting pretty pricey. They opened a bigger one not too far away, but I found it to be dirty and quite expensive.

Goodwill is one of my favorites, but you have to know when to go. I am on the line between 2 different "franchises". One gives you points with so much you spend that you can use for discounts. The other stores has Sunday and Mondays, certain sticker prices are 50% off. I like to go either when they first open in the morning (as they bring out new stuff right before) or closer to closing.  It is harder to find good things in certain ones because they go up for auction on shopgoodwill.com  Now if I could only get the prices they bring in on that website!

The Lounge / Re: Reality TV Goes In All Directions....Add One Here !

I saw that one. One brother goes dumpster diving and gives stuff to his other brother to turn into something cool. The only thing I ever saw that was kind of cool was an old typewriter. I can't remember what they did to it, but I could see someone buying it. Other than that, the show was kinda blah.

Garage Sales / Re: Winter Yard Sales in Southeast

If I would have the space, I would have a garage sale now. those that are die hard rummagers can't wait for them to start up. I find the best time is in spring, being one of the first sales of the season. another is right after the kids go back to school.

eBay / Ebay items from storage lockers
« on: January 28, 2012, 04:02:23 PM »
I have been selling on eBay for a few years now. Most of my items come from garage sales, resale stores, etc. So I know what I paid and what I need to get out of something for profit.

Here's my question. What is the best way to list things from a locker? I was pretty lucky to find some vintage things that are valuable, but what about the ones that my not be? I can't just throw it out or donate it, because even at a buck or two, its better than nothing. For instance, I have 2 small tackle boxes that are like brand new. Im thinking at $5 a piece I can move them on eBay. But I am hesitant to start listings at 99 cents. If it sells for that, I am in the hole by the time fees come out.

How many of you do the auctions vs buy it now? What is everyone's thoughts on this? I can't have a garage sale now (winter with snow here) and flea markets are pretty much the same til spring.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: For the newbies
« on: January 28, 2012, 03:48:09 PM »
I am definitely a newbie!  But we went in with our eyes wide open.  Hard work is not the only aspect of cleaning lockers.  The unit we bought was about 45 minutes away. We rented the locker for the rest of the month (cost of $10) and went a few days later to do the clean out. We loaded everything from the unit into the trailer and brought it home.

So...this is where I am. My house looks like a hoarders house. (and unfortunately a lot of our boxes were in a wet basement before being put into storage. The locker itself didn't smell but some of the boxes are horrible). So one more thing to be aware of. This unit was full of empty boxes (good thing recycling cardboard is free..but a pain to break down, not to mention I can't even re-use any of them for eBay). I am looking at everything with new eyes. Most things I would donate or just throw out, I need to try to re-sell (ok junk is junk and needs to be pitched, but my profit is going to come from vintage canning supplies and jars I normally wouldn't even look at). I can't throw anything out until I go through all the boxes (one piece of something in one box, another piece of it may be in another).

All in all, we are going to profit on it...but not by just going in, buying and reselling. Now comes the sorting, clean up, listing on eBay, possibly saving for a garage sale (can't have one now, its winter here). Taking crap to the dump (this lady even saved the styrofoam that meat comes on!).

Flea Markets / Re: How do you price clothing at flea markets?
« on: January 27, 2012, 08:47:38 AM »
Have you guys tried selling clothes on CL? In my area, I see totes full of certain sizes for $30-40. I'm not sure about adult clothes, but it may be worth a shot.

eBay / Re: What have I been waiting for?!?!
« on: January 27, 2012, 07:57:43 AM »
When eBay had all their outrageous fees for extra pictures and stuff, I started using Auctiva. It costs me an extra $9.95 a month, but I have become so used to using it. I also get the discounted insurance rates, which helps as the post office prices keep going up.

When you guys list on eBay, do you package everything up when you post? I normally do, and then put one of those sticky notes on the box. I have also gone to using shredded newspaper for packaging. Over Christmas, I got most of my presents from eBay (my kids are into stuff that I just can't go into the store and buy). I was really surprised how crappy some of my stuff was packaged.

We cleaned out our first locker yesterday. Now today, I get to go and sort everything and find out what I need to get listed. Oh how I wish it was like SW, buy the unit and someone else gets paid to do all the work!

eBay / Re: What have I been waiting for?!?!
« on: January 25, 2012, 09:52:50 PM »
Congrats Rockin!! eBay can be a real pain. I got lucky and pulled in about $1900 in December. Fees figured out to about 20%, but in all reality, I can't get those prices anywhere else.  Fiber optic decorations pull in the most for me (especially snowman ones). I find them for less than $5 (usually because the light bulb is burned out) but fix the bulb and can get anywhere from $50-100 for them (check out Hallmark Mitford around Christmas). Avon Halloween and Christmas scene ones do very well too, and easy to pick up at yard sales cheap.

I also find that if I put something on auction, to have it end on a Sunday night (anywhere between 8pm and 11pm). My Buy it Now items seem to do really well on Sat/Sun mornings.

Good luck!!!!  now...if I could only find the motivation to get my stuff pictured/listed......
