Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Human Cremains
« on: February 03, 2013, 10:33:04 AM »
Only cremains I have found so far were cats. There is no way I would dump out someones ashes and sell the urn.....ok well maybe if it was solid gold or something but generally no, I would find a way to get them back to the owner. If the storage facility refused to take them I'd abandon them anonomously at a funeral home or something. Maybe if the urn was valuable I'd dump the ashes in the ocean. People pay lots of money to have their ashes scattered in the ocean so that wouldn't be too disrespectful. I don't know, I guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

eBay / Re: USPS Parcel Post Dilema
« on: February 03, 2013, 09:45:43 AM »
Thanks for the info about using Priority mail Regional A & B. I had never even thought about that. Looks like they might be a good option for some of my items. Still not big enough for a lot of things but definitely would work for some.

Just a follow up. I did get  paid for my $600 item and all is well. I have a few more items sitting unpaid now. Two have contacted me with reasons why they haven't paid with promises to "transfer money to their paypal account so they can pay on Monday". Well, it's Tuesday......grrrrr. They're both pretty small purchases so not really worried about it. I do have one item that I have listed about 5 times with no interest and finally sold it and then....nothing. Nine days ago! The person does have over 100 feedbacks and just won't respond to me. Seriously? I'm never going to sell that thing. It's a vase. If it doesn't sell this time I'm gonna use it for target practice.

One of the items finally got paid for on Wednesday. Yay. The other guy emailed me to say he doesn't have any money, sorry! Nice. As for the vase still no response...gonna have to shoot it!

eBay / USPS Parcel Post Dilema
« on: February 02, 2013, 11:13:12 AM »
Is anyone else out there suffering with the recent USPS pricing change and the loss of "Parcel Post"? What a pain. It was just so convenient to use parcel post, print the label on Ebay and go drop it on the counter at the post office. Now I have to put a label on the package, go to the post office and stand in line to buy Standard Post (which is not yet available online and is more expensive than Parcel Post was). I've had to switch to Fedex for heavier stuff but the nearest Fedex office is 16 miles away and you can't put Fedex ground in those drop boxes. I got lucky yesterday and received a package from Fedex and the driver was willing to take my outgoing package. He said I can call and they will pick up, just leave it on my doorstep. Not sure if they charge for that but will be checking.  I have been comparing prices on most of my packages and it seems that most smaller stuff is ok at the post office but anything larger needs to go Fedex. USP is always the most expensive (so far). Just really frustrated! I don't like change....

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Fingerprints

In answer to the question, no never thought about it. Haven't sold firearms though. I do laugh sometimes when shipping items when I notice I have left visable fingerprints on the sticky side of packing tape. Too many years of watching CSI I guess.

Craigslist / Re: Do you deliver?
« on: February 02, 2013, 09:41:59 AM »
Sometimes, depending on the persons location and whether or not they fail the attitude test. Sometimes if it is a bulky item and I am having trouble selling it I will say "delivery may be available depending on location" in the ad and then suddenly there is interest. I guess lots of people want stuff but just don't have access to a truck to pick it up.

I have returned lots of boxes of photos and documents. I've only had one storage facility refuse to take stuff. They said the owners don't want it back and I think it was probably true since the unit was owned by the brother of the person who owned the actual photos and documents and some of it was bulky. Many facilities do look surprised when I walk in with a box of stuff so I am guessing most buyers of units don't bother to return stuff. I do my best to return stuff that is not easily replaceable like baby books and wedding albums, photos in general. Papers that were stored in an organized manner and appeared to be important to the people get returned but haphazard stacks and bags of paper that were obviously just tossed in a unit get discarded. Pretty much I return it if I find it before leaving the facility. If I find it later and the facility is not close to home it better look pretty important to make a trip back or it gets discarded or sometimes just set aside until the next time I go back to that location.

I agree that multiple cut locks may mean owner has had ample opportunity to remove any valuables but it depends on what the contents of the unit look like. Some packed units seem like there is just no way the owner could have reached anything other than the stuff up front. On those units I would look at the multiple locks as a sign that there could be stuff they really wanted to keep. Otherwise yes I would assume the owners have taken all the goods.

Other signs I look for would be boxes that they had to pay for as opposed to produce boxes they picked up free behind the supermarket. I hate when I see the stolen white post office boxes and the flip top boxes with store names on them (although I do like to use those boxes since they are really strong and stack well when empty). I like small boxes as opposed to large boxes. Bought a unit once with about 6 really large plastic bins. Couldn't wait to get to those bin. Never saw so many stuffed animals in my life. New rule, large bins mean light weight stuff and not too much valuable light weight stuff so I avoid large bins. I look at brand names on things like vacuums and electronics. Dyson good! Dirt Devil, not so good. Clothes and shoes labels, designer brands good! Target and Walmart brands, not so good. I look at mattresses. Decent mattresses that aren't dirty are acceptable (even though they will be most likely taken to the dump anyway) and obviously filthy and shabby mattresses, bad. TV's and computers, newer good, old bad.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: $$rate of unit vs contents

I don't really think about the cost of the unit specifically but do consider the quality of the storage facility and what it charges compared to other ones in the same area. I Try to avoid really crappy storage facilities or at lease think twice before bidding.

I would reply with something like: "Tracking shows the package was delivered on ..... It has been over 60 days since your package was delivered. I apologize that I can not be of further assistance."       You are not responsible at this point so just leave it at that. Most likely he did receive it and misplaced it and if he didn't then he should have asked sooner.

This question is really hard to answer. Off the top of my head I would say 1 in 10 is good (large gain $1000 profit+), 1 in 10 is bad (a loss) and the other 8 range from so so to pretty good. That being said I am pretty picky and tend to only buy units that show a lot of promise and don't buy units full of trash bags.

eBay / Ebay zero feedback buyers that don't pay and are NOT new accounts
« on: January 18, 2013, 05:07:35 PM »
I've had my fair share of non payers on Ebay. Usually they are brand new accounts but lately I've had a few that are many years old and still have zero feedback and don't pay. I don't get it. What's their angle. There has to be a reason for it other than annoying me. I just sold a $600.00 item (yay!!) and just looked and there it is, zero feedback, account open since 2009. I'm jumping the gun a bit because it just sold today but I have that sinking feeling. Now if I'm right and they don't pay I'm stuck waiting a week then opening a case then waiting another week to resolve it so I can relist the item. It occured to me that the plan is to get my item off the market so someone will buy his item but I checked and there is not another item like mine listed. Any other ideas?

Hopefully he will pay and I'm in the clear but it has happened a few times so I was just wondering.

I never knew about the ink cartridge recycle. I just looked it up and it looks like both Staples and Office Depot give $3.00 credit per cartridge and up to 10/month at Staples and 20/month at Office Depot, payable in the form of a rewards check sent out a month to 6 weeks later.  I'm in! Boy the things we can learn on this forum.

eBay / Re: Have you ever been dinged by negative feedback?
« on: January 13, 2013, 10:35:15 AM »
Had one a couple years ago - sold a large lot of Mary Kay. Buyer was overseas but shipping address was Florida, I think. Several weeks later I get bad feedback saying items were not in boxes as advertised and also get a message from the buyer saying essentially the same thing. After several messages back and forth it seems the buyer used someone in the US to buy the lot and then they forwarded to him in Vietnam. I sent it all in original boxes as pictures but the nearest I can figure is the recipient in Florida removed the boxes, I presume to make the very large lot fit in a smaller box for overseas shipping. Bummer but not my fault. The bad feedback was there for a year but I don't think it hurt me at all.
