Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: things that suck
« on: March 04, 2012, 08:34:19 PM »
My two year old to the auctions with me. She is my 'business advisor' and I love having her along. Of course she isn't the typical American spoiled self entitled brat - of course she is two so she has her moments. I don't see what the problem is with the family spending time together...

The lack of parenting is a different issue than people doing things as a family.

Flea Markets / Re: flea market rantings ravings and perhaps a tip or 2
« on: March 04, 2012, 08:22:20 PM »
Funny to hear you guys complain... I love and HATE the flea market. In Denver there is really only one decent one. 1/2 is the 'marketplace' with cheap Chinese junk of all kinds (two stalls at least of each). 1/4 of the drive up booths are more cheap Chinese junk from full time sellers. And then finally... 1/4 are more the garage seller type. I love shopping those 1/4 and looking for something good. Anyways, I HATE the dirtball cheap skates. Last time I was there, I had a brand new dishwasher with warranty card and receipt - bought on sale for $250 - came with our house when we bought it. It was the last of the new appliances I had to sell. I was asking $125 - about a 1/3 of the normal retail price. I can't tell you how many people couldn't believe my nerve asking that... Had all the 'regular' guys with appliance shops offering me $50 or less. I had one get particularly rude with me that when I was walking around passed his stall. He had the EXACT model used and nasty for $200. He didn't appreciate it when I told some people around his stall about my dishwasher I had for sell. Liked it even less when they came and cleaned out all my appliances (3 microwaves, 2 convection ovens, 1 stove all used and the new dishwasher) in 15 minutes...

Anyways - it's those people that want to pay $1-2 for EVERYTHING that really irritate me.

The Lounge / Re: Money over friendship?
« on: March 04, 2012, 01:31:36 PM »
I have been in similar situations... I have always gone with friendship over money. But that means my $1,000 car I would sell to a friend for $1,200 to cover all my costs. I make my money from strangers not friends or family. Payments are a horrible idea - regardless of who...

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #3...March, 2012

Well heading to an auction tomorrow... An estate with 170 lots of western art, Indian decor, log furniture, tools, and electronics. Am hoping to get ~50-60 of the lots. I put my name on the waiting lists at the 2 biggest antique malls so need to start stocking the small inventory for the booth.

I bought my first units going 50/50 with a friend. It has worked out great for us so far...

My phone with unlimited data and talk... Nothing like showing up for any type of auction and being able to google instant pricing and info. I also use it to phone a friend if I am looking at tools, construction equipment, anything to do with snakes/lizards, etc... I also use it to post to Craigslist and most recently eBay. It is also my primary camera for reselling even though I have several super nice cameras with lenses/lighting. I honestly don't think I could do what I do without it...

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Silverware
« on: March 01, 2012, 11:06:11 PM »
Guess I wasn't clear. I am talking about Silver Plated silverware from ~1915-1948 give or take. Not kitchen utensils bought from your big box store. I have done some preliminary research and it 'retails' for $5-15.00 on several websites depending on the collection they came from. My question dewalt was if I should clean all the tarnish off and get them sparkling.

Based on some additional research, I have decided to clean them up. Cleaning them (assuming you don't use drano) doesn't hurt the value.

I think I am going to put them up for auction locally and hope someone bids stupidly ;)

Other Forms of Selling / Silverware

So as I am getting into the boxes from my lockers I am coming across stuff that I would't have with my previous reselling... So I intend to ask lots of questions. If you care to help, great. If not, great :)

I have ~30 pieces of silverware - silver plate. They are all discolored and dull. My question is do you clean them before attempting to sale or leave as is? I was planning on putting on eBay if that affects the decision at all.

You can only get 'bid up' if you are too proud to stop bidding. I think the whole idea of 'bidding someone up' is funny... Like people who don't win the auction trying to make themselves feel better :)

I would love to pick your brain about the day to day operations - if you don't mind.

Reality Shows about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Hunters is FAKE!!!
« on: February 29, 2012, 10:24:05 PM »
Of course some of it is staged... Just like American picker and every other 'reality' show... My father-in-law sold something from his shop in Indiana to a producer of one of these shows that then was 'picked' from a barn... Had to sign a NDA but got 3X what he was asking...

Silly people think reality tv is real...

It is funny to watch SW and read your posts... If you do this as a business, you should never pay more than you can make money reselling and the same goes for the other guy... There is no such thing as bidding someone up - just bidding what your willing to pay. I am relatively new to the storage auction scene but have been doing auctions and reselling for a decade. The auction houses love me because I will bid on ANYTHING I can make money on. And I bid until I can't make money. I don't care if I am bidding against a 'regular,' a 'whale," or the pregnant widow of 5 children.  If you want it, you have to be willing to pay more than I am...

Sam

PS - I love when someone gets the idea of 'bidding me up.' I don't have any problem with staying at an auction all day bidding 100 times and walking away with nothing while those 'bidding me up' walk out with a substantial bill.

Personal sales are legal in Colorado. I am not a dealer so no need for background checks. I double checked all of that. Just don't know the best way to find the person who will pay the most.
