I found what sells best for me in my area are bedroom furniture, especially full sets.  All other kinds of furniture like desks, cabinets, end and  coffee tables, etc.  Also, I find people jump all over bed frames and headboard/footboard sets.  I have also had excellent results selling printers. I have sold everyone I listed.  I get immediate calls and interest in all of the stuff above.  I won two units, both full of someone house contents, listed all of the furniture and all but a piece or two sold by the end of the day, and I didnt have to show 10 different people.  Most of the stuff sold on the first or second visit.

I wish I could respond as you do, which is a lot nicer than my way.  I am generally a very nice person by nature, but some things get under my skin, like this, and I have no problem standing up for myself and telling where they can put it.

I hear what you are saying Movie Man.  Believe it or not, I think I have worked on the issue a little bit since my last auction.  I am sure there are many others similar to me, mostly newbies.  It is something I respect you veterans for.  I also respect the knowledge you guys have about what is  worth what and figuring out how high to go.  It is really cool when someone looks into the unit and says I can get that for this much, and that is worth this much, etc.  I have spent a ton of money buying value guides on all types of items.  Toys, electronics, books, antiques, collectibles, etc.  You name it I have a value guide on it.  I try and spend at least a half an hour reading through them and trying to learn that way.  There is nothing like experience, but when you are new, that isnt an option and something you can rely on.  It will take me quite a while to be able to do what you guys do, so for now I have to try and learn all I can to cut down on overvalueing.  I can thank my ADHD for this problem.  I try to remember to take an extra Aderall before an auction.

I live in Massachusetts, in Western mass to be exact.  I just spent my day creating a calendar of the upcoming auctions and planned out my days.  Did this instead of doing the work I need to do to continue to run my business.  I am reaching junkie status.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Hot Wheels Anyone?
« on: May 03, 2013, 04:46:23 PM »
I can tell you from a personal experience that dealing with hotwheels and matchboxes is miserable, that is if they arent brand new in the package.  I got a huge bin from a clean out and have sold only a few.  I went through every single car (at least a hundred) and separated them into whether they are hw or mb and then by year.  I have OCD and have researched them over and over again.  I bought value guides for both and study each car one at a time.  I have several red lines and other cars that have a value, but cannot get through my thick head that they are only valuable if they are like new and/or in original package.  I hate these cars! One of my biggest problems, with all my items, is that if I think it might be valuable, I hang on to it til I absolutely know whether the answer is yes or no.  The problem with this is I never find out! I have the mindset that I am looking for that diamond in the ruff and dont want to be someone who sells something for pennies that becomes a diamond in the ruff for someone else.  That would kill me.  I'm such an idiot  :-\

Got a question for you Cobia.  Do you follow the same thinking if you are bidding against a newbie who is not only serious about the auction business but clueless as to the value and happen to have a lot of money on them?  Or the bidder who either has no control and cannot think straight enough to stop bidding or the one who doesnt understand the value of a dollar, doesnt set a limit prior to bidding and obviously because of not setting a limit, will possibly keep bidding and bidding just to win the locker?

Craigslist / You know what I hate most about Craigslist?
« on: May 03, 2013, 04:18:53 PM »
What I hate most about CL are the sellers who have never spent a day selling on ebay, and want to get the same amount as you would on ebay.  They list what they want for it and justify by saying its going for X amount on ebay.  I cannot resist and have to respond with a big f u!  I tell them all the same thing:  You obviously have never sold a single item on ebay, cuz if you did, you would understand that you cannot get the same amount that one would get on ebay.  They do not take into consideration the hard work and time it takes to sell items on ebay.  First you research the value of the item, then you take a picture and load it into your computer, then you create the listing and attach the pics, then you have to respond to all questions in a timely manner, which involves checking many times a day, and finally you have to package and ship the item, also in a timely manner.  What makes them feel they are entitled to the same price?  I know the answer to my own question...ignorance!!

I love the bidding as a lesson in bidding, and getting to understand the bidding process (I believe if you are going to do something, learn as much as you can about it).  I get palpitations when it comes to digging in unit.  I love the units with lots of boxes. It feels like Xmas to me!  The only problem for me is once I have finished going through everything, I experience a real low.  Kinda similar to someone  who does drugs.  I actually get a little (and I mean a little) depressed that it is over and cant sit still til the next one.  I watch the show on tv and sometimes have to shut it off because I either get too excited about getting out there again or angry that they found such good stuff and wish it was me.

I have the passion.  I may be new to the storage auctions (never knew about them til a year ago) but I am not new to clean outs, estate auctions, estate sales and tag sales.  I have been doing cleanouts for the past 3 years and it never gets old.  You have to have passion to spend and entire weekend cleaning out an entire house by yourself.  I am a 5'5" 130 pound female but strong as an ox.  I move things by myself that most probably couldnt move by themselves.  I love it! My friends and family say I am crazy and a horse of a differnt color  ;)  I credit my ADHD to this success, especially having the ability to do a cleanout in a weekend when most would probably need an entire week.  I dont want to come off cocky, just wanted to explain to you why I think I have such passion.  I havent found anyone near me with the same interest that could work with me, but that wont stop me.  Please do remember me. I can promise you there are many many posts that will be pouring in from me.  If it takes that to prove I have passion than so be it.  I love a challenge  ;D

Thank you.  I have no desire to be spoon fed so please dont think that.  I have 2 small businesses I started by myself, one of them being one of the hardest businesses to start and run (elder home care) so I absolutely dont want to be spoon fed.  Plus, I respect those of you who have been in the business and would never think of taking your time.  I am totally capable of learning how to start one.  I wrote a 43 page business plan for my home care business and would never enjoy anything I didnt work hard for myself.  Grew up poor and it is really important to put in the hard work for anything I have.  Basically looking for a quick response as to how difficult and time consuming it was, before I started on the new venture.

Thank you.  Just joined forum about an hour ago and so excited to find people with the same passion as me.  Have so many questions and comments I have been stuck in general auction forum since I signed up. I will look for that forum.
