Craigslist / Re: Using Craigslist services section for labor
« on: September 03, 2013, 01:38:41 PM »
We use some professional movers to help load and unload bigger units that we found on CList.  We just have that factored into the price when we bid.  They are great and have been discounting us.  They have a truck and are more expensive then the guy and a truck but more reliable and have bought from us as well.

It was good to know how many of them were on a weekend.  The one I went to was not worth it because they wanted to much for their "designer" clothes.  It was a busy weekend so hopefully next week I can pick up some more items.

I am new but have kept a good number of the storage managers in my contact list.  I keep notes on them about their likes and dislike and make sure I chat them up between auctions not just on auction day.  I usually bring a favorite soft drink or a sonic drink when in the neighborhood.  A lot of times they are older retirees and love a little company.

I am beginning to keep a pretty extensive list of my buyers that have certain skills.  I recently met a propmaster for a TV show that shoots in Dallas and sometimes she is looking for a very specific item.  I try to steer her in the right direction if I don't have it.

I also have a friend that refurbishes furniture with a nice Facebook page and she has posted some items for me.  I just recently started my own Facebook page and will return the favor.

I have lived in Dallas for over 35 years and it has always been brutal in the summer.  I am new to Storage Auctions and the buyers here are pretty tough and leathery :)

Lately my partner and I have been able to pick up big units pretty cheaply because it is just to hot to move that much stuff.  Plus it is a good workout for me and cheaper than a gym membership.  God knows I need it.

Craigslist / If you woke up broke
« on: September 02, 2013, 06:56:45 PM »
I was reading a blog recommended on this forum call Recraigslist

http://recraigslist.com/2013/07/how-to-start-from-zero/

He posed a question and then went on to explain how he would do it
The question was what if tomorrow you woke up broke, how would you start over.
So here is the scenario

You are completely broke and in a new city.  No friends or family but you do have a car and a smart phone.
This is on the craigslist forum for two reasons
1. This month's contest :)
2. I would start by checking the free stuff on Clist.

I would love to hear your strategies and stories.

I have been checking out Clist this weekend there were some "to hot come make me an offer for everything"
Has anyone had any luck with those?

I am going to one in a bit.

Craigslist / Re: Top 10 Worst Craigslist For Sale Ads

Here is a great one.  My day job is the Food Manager for a Catholic Church and the their school.  Maybe I should put an ad like this one out there.

Here is a link to a better image

Wow accusations are flying.  I had nothing to do with the locker in question, I wish I did.  I really wanted to buy it but only under 3k.

I was hoping to get some advice and also clue some members of the forum to the unit.

My partner recently way overpaid for an online unit and the only thing we found except maybe a couple hundreds dollars of ok furniture was some worthless stock certificates.

My thoughts were that online units could easily be staged to make it look more appealing and because of its nature people overpay for the mystery of it.

My new online plan is to snipe at cheap units that I can move for small profits and load up for a flea market.

I read the original post and I think it was interesting that Travis posted on Clist before he had it.  I think that is pretty smart.  Curious to see what the rest of the community thinks.  As long as no money changes hands it should be a smart business practice.

That is interesting though I think in the thread Travis gave good information about the worth of the locker.  I think once a buyer always a buyer.
Also there might be something about shearing sheep and skinning them involved.  All businesses want good repeat business not someone who maybe felt ripped off.

The final price was ridiculous
Even at my uneducated inflated prices

Thanks for the input

Thanks for the info
It just feels that even if all that is true would it be worth it at $3k or less?
Quick math
2k for the forklift
3k for panels
and all the extra is cheese

I am way out of my depth but it looks so darn good.

This locker is out of both my price and work range but I really think you can make some money on it.

Hopefully someone on the forums can pick it up it is in the Dallas area.

Welcome to the Online Storage Auctions Forum / Another newbie
« on: August 29, 2013, 08:24:38 AM »
My name is Minh and I have just started buying lockers at storage auctions.  I made a good score on my very first unit for $170 with a nice Ninja commercial carpet a couple of Peavey speakers.  There were also a lot of nice little household items I was able to unload.  Like winning in Vegas for the first time, I was hooked.

Since then I have concentrated on small inexpensive units.  It has gone well but I have missed some good opportunities like a locker full of scaffolding and another contractor unit because I was either short on cash or just a little scared to move everything.

I now have a friend as a partner but I will have to rethink that as well after a disastrous online auction.  He is a stand up guy and works hard but we have to find a way to minimize mistakes.  I too have made my share but they have been because I have bought trashy units for little money not overpaid for good units.

It is still fun and I have met some great people.  Glad I have this forum to ask questions and troll.

What's it Worth?? / USPS Priority Boxes
« on: August 29, 2013, 08:03:11 AM »
We bought a locker recently that had hundreds of flat USPS Priority boxes of different sizes.  They have come in handy for various reason but was wondering if there is any resale value considering you can get them for free for USPS.  BTW I really appreciate this community I was up late trolling some older post last night and it was great reading.
