Some online pics suck, but I have noticed that the storage facilities that take their time and take good pics, it always works out in their benefit. There is a place in the Dallas/Fort Worth area that takes great pics so you can zoom in and different angles on all their units and they seem to get the best bids.  Some end up boing outrageous but thats another thread.

Update
Sold the painting for $2500 from a consignment shop that took 20%
Sold the West Elm office set for $250
Still have all the fabric.  Looking for the right place to sell.  There were some beautiful handwoven baskets and hand stitched pillowcases I need to find a good place to sell as well.

Bought another online unit and was surprised not to find a $2000 painting in it.

We are going to have some bad weather this Friday.  Do the auctions usually shut down for bad weather days?

Other Forms of Selling / Facebook site
« on: November 29, 2013, 07:19:19 AM »
Does anyone us their own created Facebook page to sell only their stuff?  I met a nice couple at auctions and they have built up a nice following via their facebook page
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1421818061374189/
I have one as well but not nearly as successful.  I am going to spend $50 on Facebook ads and see if that gets me anywhere starting Monday.  Mine is

Was just wondering if any of you have similar pages and if you used Facebook promote ads.  Thanks

The ironic thing is that as I was defending online auctions the SB site is down :(

And frankly I doubt these folks have any interest in this forum...they are too busy conducting business and apparently doing as well as they can at it considering there is little if any competition.

There is no doubt they monitor this forum because I received an email from them asking to publicize my recent find of the Rene Brochard painting from one of their auctions. I passed on the offer but this forum was the only place I showed both the picture from the auction and the link to the SB auction.

I hope there is more competition as it would be better for the business.

I am a member of a couple of the storage auction forums but this is the only one I post in because it is the most active. There is no reason why the Storage Treasure forum should be less active than this one but it is.  Even if it just a handful of posters that make it so this forum is more active and informative than any other storage auction site out there.  So there is hope for Travis and his site.  All it would take is an Uncle Bob or Public Storage to make that happen.  In an ideal consumer world VSA would get one and SB would get the other, like I said competition drives innovation.

Selling online is the most important tool many of us have and we are always looking for ways to improve on that and I believe buying online will be the future.

I think smalls claims court is like the Storage Wars the TV show onsite appraisal.  We all think it is easier than it is and after a ton of work and wasted time we are lucky to get half of what we think.

With photos and descriptions on online auctions, I am beginning to take Caveat emptor, let the buyer beware.  I have been fooled in both online and live auctions since I started late this summer.

We should fight for what is right but in the end you have to weigh the effort vs the reward.  When I look online I now use the description as a guide and do my best to cipher the photos.  Some facilities have great photos and some take awful ones.  Let the buyer beware!!!!

Interesting side note on the online auction.
I got an email from Storage Battles today about putting my great storage buy on their Facebook site.  It was a nice email but I told them Thanks but I want to stay under the radar.  The funny thing is how they knew.  They only place I posted any links to pics was this thread.  Also, though I still think it was a great buy I have yet to sell anything.  This unit will take a little time and research.

I have been at this for a couple of months and if I had one bit of advice it would this.
It's not about buying but about selling.
I love buying things and that is my biggest weakness as a storage auction buyer.

My little two cents to brand new buyers.
Sell everything that you can.  Look in your house, garage, and office for items that you can sell on Craigslist and sell it.
You will need to learn the ins and outs of selling on Craigslist.  There are some good guides out there and on this very forum.  I recommend
recraigslist(dot)com/
and
http://storageauctionforums.com/craigslist/

Then find all the small items and sell them at a garage sale.  Again there are some great guides out there on how to do this.
Then use that money to finance your first auction.  When you see a locker you want think about how to sell those items not just their value.  On Storage Wars it seems so easy to go get things appraised.  It is not that easy.
Anyway good luck selling and buying :)

How were you able to get the story?  Did they call you out of the blue or did you lobby some?  It really is a great piece of free advertising. :)

Stores / Woman's touch
« on: November 22, 2013, 10:28:17 AM »
Do you guys find that it is useful to have a woman's touch when it comes to setting up a store display or garage sale display?

My wife is too busy these days to help so I see my displays getting less attractive.  I have enlisted some female friends to help.  It could just be me.

It's a good setup but I forgot that I had deleted a part of my original post.  I am also paying rent on the space but it is very reasonable.  I didn't think it was a good idea to post all my business arrangements online.  She does have other venders.
But I am very happy :)
