General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Pods Horror Story
« on: December 19, 2014, 09:21:07 PM »
I won an auction this week and when I was on my third and last load I get this lady from the office steps out and says Im sorry to tell you but that pod was not for sale and was sold in error. We need you to return all the items and get a check in the mail plus $100 for your trouble. This was a 20' pod and it was to the roof full! I had 24 hours of processing that stuff and I told them to come bring a pod and pick the stuff up yourself. They didn't want to do that so here I sit with the biggest pile of household items waiting for someone that wont come to pick them up. I guess I will be keeping this stuff after all.

Once you pay the unit is yours.  They cannot demand it back, even if its sold in error.  Its their error, not yours.

This has happened to me a couple of times.  Luckily the best time was when I went over board on a room with a safe.  I took it back to the shop had a locksmith open it .. and of course empty ... got a call from the facility that they sold the wrong room and asked if I would be interested in selling the room back.  Asked for double, brought back the busted open safe and walked away happy.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Won my first auction, looking for advice

Let me guess, the wife didn't like that either?

nope ... thankfully.  going up for auction next month as well.  emeralds not the best quality so only expect $2k on it.

Found this one behind a drawer in a dresser.  Must have put it in there, fell behind it and just sat for years.

Hey everybody! So I won my first auction a few days ago, and I think I've caught the bug (time will tell I guess). I wanted to ask: what are items that I should look for in a storage auction? What are things that will always sell? No joke responses please (e.g. look out for diamonds encased in emeralds...) Thanks!

Got this out of a unit ... so I would say you should look out for emeralds encased in diamonds!  :13:

I'm sure and it only takes 5 mins to make a call. I was told that this person purchased another unit that day and put everything in it too sort threw. My unit and someone else to be exact. That theory made more sense as at least where my unit was concerned again a few hours he couldn't have been looking to recoup much. Those containers were deep. I packed most of them. Nevertheless contents clearly marked and packaged is not trash, but to him I'm sure it is. It is what it is.

He did purchase another unit and rents a room there that he uses to sort and store from other auctions.  Unless the stuff is in the back of this unit and its slipped his mine its most likely gone per our previous convo.  He is a good guy and does try to give back stuff but if needs the room its gone.

He is only one guy, getting on in years and has one truck so everything he does he does by himself which may have bought you some time.  I will probably see him on Monday for another auction so I will ask him again to double check.

this sounds very spammy but there is something about your name that I like so I'll just say congrats on the hit

Doesn't NY law require that he turn it over and not discard it?

Its up the individual facilities.  Extra Space and Public Storage in this area no longer keep any personal items.

This exact same thing happened to me in Coram 3 months ago.  The room was filled with wedding albums, urns, social security cards, baby pics ..etc.  I brought them up to the front and they didn't want it and told me to dispose of it.  I held it for a week as I usually do and then tossed it.  The previous owner contacted the facility who then contacted me 1.5 months later.

I was bummed on that one because I really wanted to get them there stuff back.

Its a shame if it was faster I could have gotten most back.  There are only 4 or 5 of us that buy there.

I also called the guy who bought it and he confirmed that it was gone.  I was hoping I could hook them up so there was a somewhat happy ending here.

In the tri state area they are going for way too much money.  people are bidding on complete mystery and/or junk double or triple what they would pay on a normal run.  This is going to bubble as the prices can't be supported and unlike regular storage auctions this format will have less people just pop in to buy and take a shot.

Right now its great for sellers but terrible for buyers.

Just saw ken french today.  He knows about the issue and the contact however the guy that bought the room has already discarded everything.

NY Lien law says you will get the overage but they deduct listing fees, certified letters, rent owed, late fees ..etc. so you most likely won't get much back if anything.

If you wrote sooner I could have helped out.  Thats my run.

I bought 3 rooms in coram that day but not yours but probably know the guy that did.  Sorry to hear about everything.

There is a small storage facility by my house that rents 15X45's for $100 a month. They only have about 7 units, the main gate uses a padlock and there are dirt floors and roads, but that's a lot of space for the money. Just goes to show you that the deals are out there if you look for them.

Thats bigger than most thrift stores in long island with rent at 2k+ a month.  Thats a great deal.

typical outdoor, non climate controlled 10x30 in long island ranges from $250-350 which isn't terrible overhead for someone just starting out.

If after a couple of months its full and you aren't making money throw it up for auction and call it a day.

44
I think everyone starts out bringing the stuff home, finding nooks for it then renting a storage unit, then maybe another one ...etc.

At one point I had 7 10x30's which was costing a small fortune in rent so I moved into a warehouse.  I have about 5,000 square feet at this point but thats not for everyone and I wouldn't suggest it unless you are planning to do this full time or have a partner or two.

Once you start getting into the heavy overheads is when you start to lose money.

Mine is a piece of art that is valued at around $50k.  A guy I know hit a piece for $220k.
