eBay / What items have you had -thrown off- eBay....if any?
« on: March 04, 2011, 09:36:40 AM »
It's happened to me a couple of times but the only one I remember is this one:

A protective (gas) mask....used US military with bag.

I see plenty of Israeli gas masks on there, but maybe because they're new.

The brief explanation was a gov regulation .... it wasn't strictly eBay doing it.

Anyone else have items thrown off eBay?  Not incidentally, this isn't an eBay bash and those who want to bash eBay can start their own thread on that topic.

THIS topic will help other eBay users to AVOID or sidestep (perhaps) trouble listing an item.

I'll come back later with my stories.

West / Got one today....7 pistol cases.....
« on: February 16, 2011, 09:39:58 PM »
Yep, you read it right 7 (count 'em 7) pistol cases....and all empty !

1 Ruger, 1 Colt, 1 S&W, 2 Glock, 2 non-name (Wal-Mart) and 2 pistol "rugs". I'll keep the rugs and sell the cases on eBay...they go from $10 to $20 or so depending on model. I also sell them in that range at the flea.

This was a 10 x 10 for $375; very clean looking with only 1 good mattress, no other furn. Lots of boxes, totes. Turns out the guy was a California Correctional Officer. One bag with his heavy jacket (with patch), pants, shirts, dress cap (with shield). Lots of black (thatch pattern) leather belts, baton holders, handcuff case (no cuffs), etc.
Did get a nice black baton (should be worth a few bucks).

Found a nice zippo (Harley Davidson) with HD black leather holder to go with it; all in a gift box. Other stuff of similar nature inluding two Bolo ties with silver and nice stone; $60 price tag on one.

On and on including boxes of papers, several boxes of criminology texts, 12 empty Nintendo DS game boxes.
I think this was a single dad with two daughters who visited, but kept the REAL goodies (like the DS box) with them when they went home to mom.

Wish the pistols had been there but....Happy with the locker  !

Nope, this wasn't the finale....it was a special with new footage and some "lessons" in how to be an auction hunter. Kind of like these forums ? !

I Tivo-ed this since I was out at live broadcast time and have worked my way through about the first hour. Not all that impressed, but some of the ideas I've used myself. My main thought is that the only REAL way to learn about this biz is to JUST DO IT.

You can't really give a lesson in how to read a locker, how to read the competition, etc. I think it just grows on you with time, success and error.

They're just getting ready to show some of the "failure" lockers they've bought in the past. That should be refreshing since the first 4 episodes a few months ago show a gun in each episode.

Their new season starts in April and they're going on the road....to Flordia.

So, the two series continue....

The Treasure Chest / Las Vegas bonanza...a real story of casino riches
« on: February 09, 2011, 11:10:49 PM »
Several years ago one of our local buyers made a BIG score but in a round-about way.

Auction buyer A bought a locker and found a casino chip in a box. I think it was a $1 chip as I recall.
Auction buyer B bought the chip from him for $5.

Auction buyer B put it on eBay and thought he would score a few bucks. It sold for $14,000 and change !

It was from the Landmark...one of the first old time casinos to be imploded.  The eBay buyer needed it to complete a collection...apparently there was more than one collector who wanted it.

******

Yep, this is a true story and all the local buyers saw it happen on eBay. Only one thing wrong with this story....it wasn't me !

Reality Shows about Storage Auctions / Storage Wars Las Vegas Episode 2
« on: February 09, 2011, 09:21:41 PM »
7:20 pm Pacific time...

Getting ready for Las Vegas 2nd episode...previews promise one of the 4 walking off with a fortune !

Who will it be?

Will come back later with comments.  ;D

******
Edit: 10 minutes into the show and I'm thinking (from the preview) that the married couple will get the big prize as Brandi digs in what looks like a plastic bag. Maybe it's a gambler's winnings being hidden from his wife then the locker was lost....you'd think if there was big cash in a locker they would find a way to bail it out.

Edit: 5 minutes before end of program. The couple the big winners as I thought.....happy for them....wish it was me ! In a few minutes they'll announce how everyone came out...the couple and Dave the biggies. Darrel may score big on his vase....reality would say not considering the junk furn that was wrapped up.

Edit: Unbelievable...not just lady luck...junk furn and 3 pricey vases?  That's entertainment !

Couple chips total out at:  $512  I can believe the chips...can't believe the vases.

These paragraphs are from Wiki.

At year-end 2009, a total of some 50,000 self storage facilities, owned by 30,235 companies, have been developed in the United States on industrial and commercial land parcels. There is more than 2.35 billion square feet of self storage in the U.S., or a land area equivalent to three times Manhattan Island under roof. The five large publicly traded storage operators (four REITs and U-Haul) own or operate approximately 9% of self storage facilities. More recently, in many metropolitan cities where competition among storage companies is fierce, better parcels of land near residential and commercial areas are being converted into self-storage once approved by zoning panels.

According to the "Self Storage Demand Study - 2007" (published by the SSA) one in ten U.S. households now rent a self storage unit. The growing demand for self storage in the U.S. is created by people moving (some 40 million Americans move each year according to U.S. Census data), and by various lifestyle transitions, such as marriage, divorce, retirement, a death in the family, etc.

The next time you get a personal jet in a locker you can hop aboard and go WAY out of state ! ;D

General Storage Auction Talk / Found another storage locker forum.....
« on: February 09, 2011, 06:16:11 AM »
....but you don't want to go there.

That one has NO running threads going and is as close to DEAD as you can get...IMHO.

At least here there are 10 or so people here willing to say Boo. You would be posting to a wilderness there.

General Storage Auction Talk / I wanna see that !
« on: February 09, 2011, 05:37:47 AM »
The opposite of a thread in another area.

What I wanna see are the gold bars.

In my area when we walk up to a person who has just bought a locker we sometimes start the conversation with "Any gold bars today?" or words to that effect.

I didn't see them, but a fellow I trust said a "doofus" kind of guy came to his home seeking advice. He literally had a small bucket with gold bricks in it. Remember, I trust this guy.  Others have verified that the "doofus" had bid on and won a locker that looked OK but nothing great.

Apparently the "doofus" and his "goofy" partner had tumbled on to the Real McCoy. They have both disappeared from the scene, but not before "goofy" stuck it to his partner by cleaning out the locker and taking it on the lam.

So yes, I wanna see that...gold bars.

Here are some of mine. Feel free to contribute.

"Remember, those photos you kept for 20 years? I have them"

"Nice thong, but the stretch marks are a turn off"

"You want to pay me HOW MUCH to return -your- stuff to you"

"When are you defaulting on your next locker? Give me a call"

"Don't call me when you default on your next locker!"

Happy Valentine's Day to those who have fallen on hard times...may the times get better !

General Storage Auction Talk / Fortune Cookies for Auction Buyers
« on: February 09, 2011, 05:10:04 AM »
I'll start it and I expect 900 contributions from 900 new members by the end of the month.

"You will find used diapers today. Wear gloves."

"Your fortune awaits you."

"Don't bid against Dave."

"Help! Trapped inside a 5x5 at Polk and Lex in Chicago."

"Free listings at this (deleted) web address"

Get the idea ?

I know this show is edited for the drama, and the four characters are probably encouraged to maintain a "type". Since I have recognized these "types" in my own area auctions, it certainly is easy to relate to.

Personally, I think Dave is a pest...I mean really...the CONSISTENT bidding up of the other buyers is to the extrme.
I like Barry...he isn't mean spirited at all and has a moderate approach to his buying.
Darrel seems reasonable enough...some of his finds REALLY seem staged by the show producers.
Jarred seems like a regular guy trying to make a living. His wife is not the total shrew she could be, and I have seen couples like this over the years.

750
We all know you can't go in a locker when the door goes up, but one auctioneer practically goes ballistic when your toes lap over the doorway opening !  Have you seen this and if so has there been any crowd reaction to the auctioneer's over-reaction?

I have also seen auctioneers (or the property manager) get bent out of shape when you lean over (at the waist) and the top part of your body bends into the locker. Is it just me, or does this kind of reaction seem out of line? Personally, I think these types are reaching out with their "power" to show how much control they have!
