Online Storage Auctions / Re: How many people buy online?
« on: February 17, 2014, 12:48:03 PM »
Recently, I've purchased many more units online than in person. However, I would never ever spend big money on a unit that's listed online.

How much is "big money" ?

As for shill bidding, that happens at in person auctions as well.

At least at regular auctions (depending on crowd size and your familiarity with the bidders) you can see who is bidding against you; strangers would stand out...if they keep bidding high and no one else with you knows them, dump it on them.

It might be worth it to you depending on your volume and what you are selling movieman . If your selling a lot and doing collectibles clothing and decorative items it might very well be worth the investment

Thanks for that link Fred !  Your example and the greater than 3 month window on Worthpoint makes sense for those kind of items.

Should I ever get deeper in items of that type of item I think you're right that WP might in fact be "worth" it.

These guys are actually (in some cases) talking about lockers being used for growing pot !

I ended up with a subscription to Worthpoint and I can say don't waste your money. It mostly gives you the price that an item sold on ebay for in the last five years. I don't use it very often.

That's what some of the reviewers said in the link above. Thanks for the confirmation.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Let's Play: "What Would You Pay?"

I think it would go $1000-$1200 pretty easily in my area. Maybe more. Those that said $200 really surprised me. People in my area pay $200 for a tiny locker filled with a few garbage bags.

That's the better part of California for sure.  It will be interesting to see what this actually went for.
It might have been a fluke that went in the $300 range, but if so that's just what it was..a fluke.

A little more info on the unit: It had been in storage for decades until the owner died.  And there was another visible tool chest towards the back.

Ten years ago I bought a similar looking locker though it had more mechanic's type stuff showing.
Another guy and I duked it out until I got it for $800. That was a lot of money then but the two Snap-On cabinets were part of the attraction.

When I got into them they were both EMPTY.....but, the guy had put all his SO and MAC tools into an old wiper blade cabinet and put the opening parts toward the wall at the back of the unit. Made out good on that despite the high price. Today a locker like that would easily go for $1500 to $2,000 in my area depending on the crowd.

True, true.

But I wouldn't think of your picks as Tchotchke.   I considered it more like cheap figurines and gaudy snow globes from Vegas casinos......

And you'd be right. The stuff I buy is anything but that. However, I see a lot of the stuff they're buying and am thinking I should take a flyer on some of it and try it out. If cheap enough it wouldn't be a big loss if it only broke even or even if it didn't sell.

The stickman they bought ($125 split between the two of them) is something I would buy if I saw if for $25 or so, but not at $125.

The bearded guy, Jason, has a house full of Tiki stuff himself so he KNOWS about values there. I wouldn't have a clue...just another thing to learn if I wanted to buy some.

Nope, I'll happily dole out $75 for a tool I know I can get $250 and up for. In another thread I talked about a used tool I bought at a ranch sale for $35 and sold for $250. At the same time I bought a brand new one of those for $75 and it sold for $1K on eBay (they sell new for $2,100. But, in the last two years I've only found 4 or 5 of those...don't get me wrong, that's great but there is a ton of the kind of stuff those thrift guys buy and if one can get a few in the $3 to $25 range and make $30 to $100 that's a good return too.

Just thinking about it that's all. Today I went in a thrift store and I still couldn't make myself go through all the shelves of stuff and the racks of clothes. Hard to turn to a new method.

In my area I couldn't get that locker for what I would pay for it, but I can tell you that someone here would pay about $750 or so just based on the toolbox let alone the mystery boxes and whatever could be seen if it were a "live" auction.

People here pay that much because the typical locker sells for about $250 and doesn't have even 1/3 of that much showing. That's why I got out of buying lockers; too much money for too little product.

This is the Yiddish spelling.....most of us spell it C-R-A-P.

But some of it sells!

Here is what I would call crap and a lot of this was found in storage lockers I bought over a 10 year period.

Used pots and pans, mattresses, clothing, shoes, paint, lumber, tools, you name it.

At least with picking you have a better chance at choosing what USED items you want to pay money for.

Today I bought four sealed models for $3 each. They will sell for around $20 each. I rarely found any new, unbuilt models in lockers.

I also bought a piece of electronic test equipment for $20 that should go for $75 to $150 depending on who is looking to buy. I did find a locker of similar stuff (8 years ago) and I did great on it; I never saw those particular items again in a locker but have bought half a dozen over the last couple of years by picking.

Time to try expanding a bit and getting out of the comfort zone for a while. At least at picking prices if they don't pay off one hasn't lost much in the investment.

I like that show. I think it's fun to see what they pick up. They definitely don't pick up the types of items I would but it does make me think about looking at different things.

That's true for me too.  I buy mostly tools, electronics and industrial items but I see plenty of the stuff they buy so I am thinking the best thing I have learned from the show is to expand my horizons.

If I can buy stuff cheaply enough and make some scores on even a few of them, it will pay off and the stuff that doesn't sell can be donated, sold at a flea market (maybe) or sold at a yard sale.

Still, like you, I am going to find it hard to buy a tie with paw-prints on it, or something of that sort.

My best toy pick was a Marx WWII era train set; army engine, cars (searchlight, tank carrier flat car with wind-up tank).  Paid $100 (years ago) sold for $400 on eBay.  Old toys are neat but I have bought Marx stuff that hasn't sold as well (that is, as well as I hoped !)

I really know next to nothing about this, but once in a while when I research something the item will pop up in a Worthpoint screen and of course it says something like "join to see what this item sold for"

I just did a search on reviews of Worthpoint and what I saw wasn't encouraging.

I haven't seen the show......are they selling in their own store or something too?  I don't see them making a living just on what is selling on ebay recently.......

I've watched 2 episodes of I think 3 available. So far no store of their own is shown. In the 2nd episode they went to Atlanta, GA to shop. Of course the airplane tickets, etc aren't shown in the expenses which take away from the profits.

If they spend $28.75 the "spent" tag pops up showing $28 and then the "projected" sale amount pops up with whatever they think they'll get...maybe $240 or something on the $28.  At least that is a little better than the Storage Wars renderings. Then when they sell the stuff (in a speeded up process on eBay) they break it out to the profit level too...I don't think Storage Wars really did that, and it was so faked up anyway it didn't matter.

So far I like this one because it has exposed me to a few new items I might look for or just run across.
I don't think I've really found a good buy in an antique mall and they pretty much didn't either. Generally those places are run by people who know what they've got and are looking to sell to the end buyer.

I and other pickers like the flea markets, thrift stores, garage sales, piece by piece auctions where the prices are better and the profit potential is higher.

This show is a step down (in several ways) from American Pickers, but still somewhat enjoyable...at least for a while. Who knows how long it will last. Doesn't have much of a cast, but then neither does American Pickers.

Here's the eBay offering of Mr. Skinny Bones (by Marx) as seen on episode 2 of Thrift Hunters.

I'm pretty sure this is the other featured player from the tv series but can't verify that yet. This seller is based in Las Vegas where the tv show actors are based.

Item had not sold as of 2/12/14 and was acquired sometime around May, 2013.

Edit:

Yep, looking at the last two pictures in the Mr. Skinny listing each of the two actors is shown with the doll. So, now we have the eBay sellers names on both these guys. If this show pans out it will be fun to watch their buys come and go on eBay.

The first two episodes I watched appear to have been taped in May, 2014 and first broadcast in January, 2014, about 8 to 9 months after being produced.
