Awesome look forward to checking it out. I been kind of a sporadic visitor lately but leaving my day job in the comming weeks so will have much more time on my hands and also planning on getting more into auctions

I almost did this one time when I saw a really great unit and was short on cash but decided against it. If it was a unit with one high dollar item I may consider it but otherwise just dealing with some stranger or even just a casual colleague you know from auctions I dont' have the trust to say okay lets split it and sell it and split the proceeds. If the other guy finds a gold necklace while searching I don't trust him not to pocket it. With so many small dollar items I just think its more hassle than its worth to have to try to sell them together or decide who gets what.

Back when I was heavy into auctions I was working with a smaller bankroll than I am today so I was tempted many times to do something like this however now I have enough money to buy any unit I would want to buy, anything over what I could afford would be more than I would ever want to lay out on an auction anyway.

My current business partner and I may get back into auctions to supplement our other ebay business and we'll have much deeper pockets together than I used to so in a sense I guess thats partnering but its with a friend I've known for 10 plus years.

I think in all the auctions I've ever been to I saw this happen only once. It was someone showed up and during the viewing and tried to take something out of the auction and the manager and auctioneer stepped in and put a stop to that real quick.

I think they are very concerned about liability of having people on their property which is why you have to sign in, somtimes show ID, etc. For that reason at least in my area they don't allow any confrontations between locker owners or even fellow bidders

What I really can't make any sense of is pretty much everyone feels ebay already heavily favors buyers to a fault. If you wanna keep the status quo fine go ahead and don't sway things to sellers but to go even heavier handed in buyers favor is absolutely ridiculous. They had to know many people already left because of this and people already felt strongly about this issue and they do this. I don't see anything positive comming from this, I think if anything the policy will be abused and it was totally an unecessary change to make

65
I got a policy update or notification the other day about buyer protection being extended from 45 days to 6 months. Really a half year? What could possibly go wrong with an item that you can't figure out in 45 days. I think 45 days is more than enough time to find glitches or errors in a product. Anything over 45 days let alone 6 months is user error or abuse if a product breaks. Who needs 6 months to decide if they like an item or want to keep it.

What do you guys think of this?

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Why do I have to sign in and show ID?
« on: October 09, 2014, 10:45:35 AM »
Singing in is pretty common, I don't believe I've ever had to show ID unless I actually purhcased a unit. Reason for it? Who knows its their place they make the rules but it is a controlled environment you can't go in unless you rent a unit or are there for an acution. If you are there for an auction they want to know who is on their property

eBay / Re: eBay & PayPal Splitting Up
« on: September 30, 2014, 02:58:23 PM »
I don't think this is really an issue that affects us users much if any, more probably for independent decision making to be made about each ocmpany as well as tax benefits possibly. Ebay and Paypal are wierd together. I love how they work together to ban you from ebay or to do the 21 day holds but hwen it comes to releasing those 21 day holds all the sudden they are not linked and you have to go manually enter tracking, call paypal up and go item by item telling them this item positive feedback was left for, this item tracking shows delivered 3 days ago. THey are linked when it suits them and not linked when they want to hold our money. :41:

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Storage Auctions & Identity Theft
« on: September 30, 2014, 02:55:56 PM »
If someone can't pay for a storage unit who wants their identity and credit history lol. I'm sure some people have done bad things with info they found. I know I routintely find years worth of tax returns, social security cards, credit card statemetns, etc. If they didn't have auctions storage facilities would just throw them away and they would be at risk that way, its not like a storage facility is going to sort and shred sensitive documents so I don't think it contributes anymore than a storage facility just tossing them would

Do you guys think there's an unspoken rule about once you have a few units under your belt for the day call it a day and go home or is it man with the biggest pockets takes it all? I used to be on kind of an auction circuit where the same auctioneer would do like 8 or 10 facilities per day. Generally not a ton of auctions maybe one at each facility maybe 2-3 but not a ton of auctions. Among us regulars there was kind of a rule once you've taken down two or 3 good units call it a day and go home. Occasionally some newbie would show up with deep pockets and who you could tell didn't really inspect units that well was just kind of throwing money around taking everything. We definately made him pay. I can definately see people saying its every man for himself if you got the cahs take every unit that comes up but among our group it was kind of a take a few and call it a day type atmosphere. You generally have to clear units out in a day maybe two max I don't even see how the guy could do all his units in that time and they generally aren't too generous with more time in my area unless your a regular.

Look up each of those on eBay and select completed listings. That will give you an idea of what people are willing to pay for them.

Yeah was trying to do that, was seeing things go for a pretty huge range, also some people put in more ram or a solid state or something and then that kinda affects price too. You think I'll be able to get ebay prices on cl since they are macs and lot of demand or think I'll get lowballed like everything else?

Same here, but in my case I always seem to find out about these auctions after they've been held.

Yeah thats always been my problem as well, I hear about it weeks or months after it took place so then like okay have to remember that for next year and so long in between next year always seems to pass me by. CHicago police have a great auction once a year that should be comming up soon, I'll have to look into that. ITs a bike lovers dream like 200 to 400 bicycles you have to sit through before they get to the rest of the stuff.

72
Yeah I would most definately go in person> I think anyone who has ever shopped for a used car can attest to the fact that some stuff you see online it's like wow that looks super nice wonder why its so cheap and you show up and yeah photograph definately hid cosmetic imperfections let alone you don't know anything mechanical from pics.

Yeah I used to go to some US Marshal auctions for cars that were run by the same guy who runs many storage auctions. I always seem to miss the city ones though. I imagine big city ones are good like for you Dallas and me CHicago but I wonder if one may have better luck at smaller burbs, less people know about them maybe. THe one I wanted to attend this morning was in a suburb about 45 min from Chicago of about 150k people. I could have gone to the viewing this mornning before work and sent my girl with the money but figured I"d rather be there for the whole thing if I'm gonna drop a few thousand. Disapointed I missed it though.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Sports Cards
« on: September 27, 2014, 10:01:53 AM »
Sports cards are such a headache to look through. 99% of what you find is gonna be mid to late 80's to mid 90's cards which are worth nothing as they were overproduced and sports cards just don't seem to have the popularity they did when I was a kid. THere are some gems ie error cards or like a Jordan baseball card or something but most are worth nothing. I used to buy upper deck sets 2 one to put in a binder and one to leave sealed thinkingone day they'd be worth something. I think I was getting like $9.99 for unopened full sets of like score and some others. They take up a lot of space but for the little they are worth I figure I'll save them for my kid someday

What's it Worth?? / Re: Cabbage Patch Kids Anyone?
« on: September 27, 2014, 09:59:33 AM »
I sold a Teddy Ruxpin or however its spelled the one with the tape inside that talks and mouth moves, got a decent buck for that a few years back. I'm was going through my basement looking to clear some stuff out and listed a few cabbage patch dolls on ebay for fairly low prices and non sold, I think relisted a few times and gave up.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Pickin thrift stores
« on: September 27, 2014, 09:38:19 AM »
I find hte best hidden gems at good will stores vs privately owned thrift shops. Though finds can be found at both, a store owned by a person its often an owner operator who though they don't know anything typically if they are successful will research items and be able to recognize items others may not realize have a lot of value. At good will its just people working a min wage job pricing items so they don't have that same vested interest a buisness owner may have and also may not know about whats good and whats not.

For any of you pet owners out there goodwill is a great place for couches and cushions. Dog beds cost a fortune like $20 to $40 for a decent one. I go to goodwill and can buy my dog his own couch for like $11. I keep the couch but if you didn't wanna take up that much space you could toss the couch and just use the couch cusions in place of a dog bed. Thats my little frugal tip for pets owners.
