Title: Storage Wars....Spring 2011...New Episodes
Post by: MovieMan on March 14, 2011, 01:55:05 PM
On Wednesday, March 16, 2011 the new Storage War episodes start with the same 4 guys duking it out
for the goodies! (A&E on Cable/satellite)

Meanwhile, not too much going on in the thread link below where the producers of Storage Wars are looking
to recruit what I think is new talent for auctions in the Florida area...THAT should be interesting as well given what TreasureHawk and some others have posted about Florida.

Here's the SW producer link.

Let em come to Houston, I know a few thrift store owners who recently went out of business that would love five minutes on camera. Perhaps they should do a special episode called "Storage Wars, the devastation and aftermath". :o

Storage Wars and Auction Hunters are a conundrum:  We hate them and love them at the same time.
Well, OK, some people just plain hate them.

Personally I watch them, enjoy them (on several levels) and meanwhile curse them for the crowds they have produced. Just have to live with it and as member-auctionninja-said, -up my game-  until they go away.

By the way auctionninja...where are you...lurking in a black suit in a storage auction hallway ?

New episode starts in about 15 minutes.....

I watched the preview on the network's website. Looks like business as usual as the boys
fight for some good lockers, tools, etc.

Edit: Half way through Darrel has gotten 2 lockers to fill up the big truck his son drove.
After the break coming back to a tool lkr with Dave, Jarrod and even Barry going for it. Barry likes
the duffel bag.

Edit 2: Barry starts throwing stuff out looking for a collectible and doesn't find it.

Darrel finds M-16 rounds and a pistol mag with hollow points....no guns...thank you for REALITY for a change.

Dave risks $60 and says "..if you can't risk $60 in this business you've got no business being here". He strikes out and gives stuff to Goodwill...apparently he did 30 days of community service in 2008 but he doesn't say why.

Not an exciting show, but a bit more realistic than usual.

He got stuck in a unit, to bad it was a 10x30, now he can't find his way out.

Did anybody notice when they took a shot of the crowds, the crowd size was triple what it was when they started the show?  I wonder if the money these guys are making off the show makes up for the extra money they are now spending on lockers?

I'm sure the non-disclosure clause is air-tight on what benefits they derive.

Can't argue with the success of the show (new cities is an indication of that) but too bad it negatively affects those of us who have been doing it for some time. Yes, I know...work harder, work smarter!

Meanwhile, I'm still waiting for them to show the dump run of one of the 4 guys. I would guess a benefit of being one of the 4 is that they don't haul away everything, and that dump runs are taken care of by a clean-up crew.  After all if they can have 3 or 4 cameramen covering it from any angles, they can hire some guys to go to the dump. Maybe some of the buyers who are attending and don't get a locker get to paw through the lefovers.

I have to admit, the Cadillac Barry pulled up in was pretty sweet. It must be a prop, I don't care how cool he appears to be for his age....People on social security don't have hydraulics.

Watched the new episode tonight.  This new season seems to be at least slightly more realistic.  They aren't making a ton of money, and are even losing some.  Plus, the crowds are a lot larger than they were last season, just like real life!

I missed the March 23 episode as I was out of town....have to find it on the internet....or a re-run on tv.  ;D

I spoke with one of the guys in production on these shows and they said the way they do it is they have the actual auctions before they start taping and then once all of the units are sold then they come back and "recreate" the auction using actual sales prices, etc. for TV.  So its mostly real, just jazzed up a little bit for TV.

I missed last week's episode, but tonight's (March 30, 2011) hitting the realism button again.

Too bad they didn't show the actual purchase prices on all six of the bag-lady lockers.

Dave hit it good (AGAIN) but when you come right down to it, this was a perfect example of JUST PLAIN LUCK being a big factor. You can't see everything of course and even when you do buy a quality locker for the furiture, electronics showing, there's no guarantee there will be good jewelery (gold/silver).

The locker I bought that yielded a Ruger 10-22 and a Ruger P89 only cost $169 and those two items were buried on the back wall. I bid what I wanted on the locker and JUST LUCKED OUT (not as big as Dave of course). By the way, this was months before the tv shows started.

Forgot to mention some of tonight's realism...and NOT realism.

In two of the last 3 episodes Barry has just TOSSED stuff out of the locker. This seems for effect to me as even a real collector would take a little more care.  The rest of that pile story I would like to see....I don't believe Barry hauls the crap away himself, nor do I believe he hires anyone. I still think the show's producers take care of all that. Could they come to my aid ?

So, the ivory sold at auction. What about the rhino horn items...they were supposed to add up to 5 or 6K if I remember correctly.

Just too many unanswered questions, and it wouldn't take that long to answer them.

Another thing about this show is that when the "expert" throws out a price range (say $150-$300), their little on screen total always jumps by the largest amount.  Trying to make it just that much more profitable I guess.

Then, when they show him auctioning off the ivory at the end, he says the stuff sold for $2400 instead of $2000.  Okay, but what about the 35% - 40% that the auction house gets?  Sure, he made money, but if you take even 35% off of $2400, that only leaves you with a little over $1500.

As far as Barry throwing the crap outside........I can't believe that there isn't some salable items in that pile!  I know he is looking for the "big score", but what does happen to the rest of that stuff?  He would be better off trying to at least get some of his money back by selling it cheap to Jarrod and Brandi.

Lot's of questions, where's the answers?

Last night's episode of Storage Wars left me feeling like the show is completely fabricated. The 6 units belonging to one lady certainly could happen, but they also had "one more interior unit"........   What are the chances that anyone would leave $12,000 bucks worth of jewelery in a storage unit? Just the way the box was inside that chest of drawers, so it could easily be found when whoever won it was going through the unit.... I don't know guys what did you think about it? I could totally see the show's producers renting out the locker and planting that stuff in there, it just didn't seem real to me. I have never questioned the show before, but last night just didn't seem real.

YoungGun....take a look at the video in reply #19 just above.

Looks like Darrell made a mistake selling it at a $200 loss. At end of video it shows how much they made.

Good job....follow him around each time and you'll be set !

Just started watching a new episode tonight, and Barry shows up and there is a huge crowd.  He's talking to one of the guys who says this is his first week and he's going "all in" and is going to quit his job!  He better wait and see what he's in for first!

Wednesday, April 13, 2011...

Dave and Darrell aren't in the running tonight so Barry and Jarrod go for it.....

so far, just bidding....but Jarrod is losing it to "Bill" for $2600.....Barry thinks the guy will lose his shirt..maybe break even...we'll never know. Jarrod should be glad he quit.

Oops....here comes Darrell !
Gets one at $1k.  Says..."that was expensive."

Jarrod gets to look at the lkr he lost....finds some stuff and gives the new owner an idea of value.

Bill said earlier he was quitting his job to do auction buying full time !

Barry looks in his trunk....finds....(a commercial)...and then....nothing in the trunk. Finds some furs...which
he gives to Dave!

Darrell paid a grand for a locker....nothing but trash and some old books...book guy says.....$4 for "The Sun Also Rises" and $200 for a Hemingway book...oh well, Darrell...can't win 'em all.

I give 5 stars to this episode for REALITY !  You go guys !

Storage Wars Marathon Sunday with a new episode at the end of the trek with Darrell and Dave getting into finger pointing and name-calling !

They are starting to pay for the show now!  I still wonder if what they get paid for doing the show outweighs how much more lockers are costing them and the hassle of the bigger crowds?  It's starting to look like they are negatively affected just like the rest of us!

Awesome episode. The winner is the one who didn't even show up. The highlight of the show in my opinion is the newbie is at his first auction and before it even starts he says he is going to quit his job and do this for a living. What a dumbass!

I guarantee he lost his ass paying $2600 for that unit..... that was probably his whole tax return lol

"Bill" is probobly the new caracter they are adding to the show. You will see more of him in the coming episodes.
Also most likely you will see less of Dave in the coming shows, as i think he is on it's way out of the show.

I have to give credit to Storage wars, they bring the reality to the table and show most sides of the business.

This is a sure thing for me every wedensday, cool show!

Well, "Bill" might be a new one in the lineup, but they were recruiting for Miami, New York and Dallas which to me says 12 weeks or so in each city with a new crew in each city...they need to keep it fresh.

The more honest approach at finds and values is refreshing....I'm still waiting to see a dump run though. That's what I suggested to their recruiter who looked for input here on these forums.

Encinitas, CA...beach town in southern LA.

Who will be the big winner tonight and with what item(s).

Dave Hester Jr. packs in $5,600 .... will he make an impression ?

**************

Barry looks like a green leprechaun.

*************

1st lkr....looks a bit sparse. Derrell wants to dump it on Dave.
Yeeeppp !

2nd lkr....nice red bag....small contents but neat. Barry likes it.
Will the leprechaun get it?
What the heck is the guy in orange doing?

To be continued....after the commercial.

3rd lkr....best of the day? They're all drooling !
First bid is $1k.  Sells for $5,550......Dave says "Even I'm nervous at that price".

Rest of show dedicated to the opening of goodies.
Winner of the $5K plus.....gets a couple of slot machines. Rolex box (empty).
Ball cards (good ones), good fishin' poles. Frame on an old oil painting...Dave says it's worth $700 plus.

Good stuff, but still...takes a lot of goodies to pay off the $5K plus "nut" before you start making profit.  ;D

Nice play by play!

Why the hell did Dave Jr. pay $5,550 for a storage unit with no real visable valuables. Has anyone here ever seen lockers go for prices like this???? The highest I have seen in my short career was $2200, over $5k is a bit ridiculous....

You can catch a re-run of the show and take a look at the locker. When they get that high it is scary. I have seen $2,900 (I got that one), $3,100 ( didn't get it...I was in at $3K)....I think those are the highest I've seen. Plenty of $1K to $2K though.

Florida hunters...be sure to let us know if/when the producers tell you which units you must bid on and win. I have friends who have been at this for decades, all of them think we're seeing staged units. A poster on the Storage Wars forum pointed out that some of the toys shown in one "find" (I think it was Jarrod) were so rare that he knows which collection they were borrowed from for the show.

I got a private message asking about the $2900 lkr I got. Actually, it wasn't a lkr, but the entire contents of a 3 bedroom house with 2 car garage and yard full of stuff. Details are here in this link:
