I was at a pawn shop in one of the Chicago burbs the other day, turns out they were filming pawn queens while I was there.

They obviously were't just filming random drop in's though, I had seen on CL a few weeks earlier a post about "Do you have something interesting you want to sell?" "Would you like to be on tv?" "A popular television show is looking..." blah blah blah so basically they had everything all set up prior to filming.

I'll stick with shows like American Restoration or Desert Car Kings. You just can't fake shows like these.

So your oppinion is that Pawn queens, American Jewelry (hardcore pawn), And Pawn Stars are fake?
Have you ever been to any of these stores? I have,  to American jewelry in Detroit, it is real as it gets.

Yes they edit things on the show, and they pic out the most crazy scenes, but still 100% real.
When they make show's like this, they film up to 3000 hours of film, then they go back to edit all of it. What they pick out and make a 30 min show out of is totally up to the production company. And of course based on what will bring the best ratings. It is all about entertainment value.

To hard to understand for some, i understand that.

All reality shows are fake and staged, desert cars and american restauration are no different.

I havn't watched much of the desert one but I do agree I prefer american restauranion. It's not that its not fake but at least the show actually revolves mainly around the actual business the show is about as opposed to a show like pawn queens that is more about the storyline and drama  between coworkers than it is about the pawn or resale business.

All these shows however if not completey fake are staged to show people who are characters, interseting things, etc because nobody wants to watch the boring normal daily goings on of a business. I do agree however that some do a better job of showing the actual busines the show is supposed to be about as opposed to some drama between characters on the show.

Here's a thread about how american restauration and pawn stars are fake.

Calling it fake is wrong. And i am sorry, but that link you posted is not to a serious place. It is a "forum" where people are talking about the shows after seeing it on tv. BRAVO for good source use rulesforrebels.  ::) come up with something better. Or even better, go to one of the stores and see for your self.

Mr. A. staged is essentially the same thing as fake. If it's not straight up filming the normal goings on of the business it is fake to an extent.

I didn't scour the web for a good source and I doubt the New York Times has done any stories about whether American Pickers is fake but just did a quick google search and that was the first thing that popped up, I know it was a forum and who's to say the one guy really did know someone who sold something to pawn stars.

Maybe I'll write up a post on my blog and actually do some research into how accurate these shows are.

Pretty much all these pawn type shows however are not just setting up cameras and filming normal everyday people bringing stuff in. They generally do some advertising looking for people who want to be on the show and who have interesting things to sell. Then the people selling things come on to a closed set at the store and sell their item in a staged setting.

It's not totally fake I agree. Its not like the pawn stars pawn shop is just a set and doesn't exist and its not like the characters are actors. It is staged and not an authentic situation though.

Like I said though, it's understandable because the normal everyday goings on of a pawn shop aren't going to be as exciting as people bringing in major pieces of history and one of a kind items.

A show that's fake was that black gold show about the oil guys. A buddy of mine moved down to Odessa and he said they were actually having casting calls for the show, bringing out guys hwo had never set foot on a rig, just looking for entertaining, good looking, etc guys. The whole show is fake.

So no pawn stars, storage wars, etc aren't fake like that but they are staged and staged isn't authentic and is kinda fake.

Staged is one thing, and can not be called fake.

Most of what you see on tv is staged because it is based on what have happend in the past.
Most show's are filmed after it happened, but to make that possible they have to stage it as it ones went down.
Sometimes they can't get a hold of the original seller, and then they use stand in's.

As for Hardcore pawn, i was there to look, this was way before the show started, and that place is very much like what you see on tv. Screaming people and people beeing escorted out by security. I was there for 35-40 min and saw 3 people go banasas and had to be escorted out.  On another note, the personal battle between sister and brothr i think is more for the show, to give itsome edge. Bu to call it fake is not right.

Thats like me calling your stories fake or a lie, just because you are telling me something that happened to you in the past. And as you are trying to tell me your story you add body language to make it more funny for other to listen to you. Are you fake then?? no. Same thing with the shows.

Mr. A were kinda playing semantics here with fake vs staged.

If I asked you how does the auctions as well as findings on shows like storage wars and auction hunters compare to the actual auctions you attend in terms of how they go, prices, and what they find in units, and asked you to rate it on a scale of 1-10 what would you say?

My guess would be below 3. This is why I say it's fake/staged, it's not an accurate representation of what auctions are like, what you find, etc.

Do i have units that are half way trash, yes.
Do i get units that are totally trash? no.

You said that all reality shows was fake, thats where you came from. And thats where i answerd you.  What do storage auctions find have to do with pwn stars and hardcore pawn??

I have to say, I am confused by your post #9 above, but that's OK you don't need to explain it to me. I will comment though on the last sentence "What do storage auction finds have to do with pwn stars and hardcore pawn??"

I think in general we talk about related subjects and the pawn shows are one of them....the thread is in the "stores" area and some people who buy storage auctions might take some of their items to a pawn for appraisal if nothing else. I think several people have said in a variety of threads that they probably would not sell a storage auction item to a pawn shop because as "resellers" we know that the best bet (profit wise) is for us to sell to the end-user. Sure, once in a while we will sell cheaper to another reseller to clear inventory (or BIG stuff in my case) but generally speaking most of us probably wouldn't sell to a pawn shop.

If nothing else, the pawn shows let us see a variety of merchandise and allow us to get "some" idea about worth.

I won't get into the "fake" or "stage" arena of this thread. I think we all have our ideas about this aspect of the tv shows whether they are pawn or storage related.

Mr. A. I find good stuff all the time too but my good stuff tends to be a flat panel tv worth $500 an antique piece of furniture worth maybe a grand, I do not however find one of a kind historical pieces, vases worth thousands of dollars, etc.

Don't get me wrong I have found some pretty unique and cool thigns and even some great collectibles but overall my good stuff tends to be flat panel tv's high end furniture, etc not one of a kind collectibles, rare historical pieces, etc which tends to be majority of the type of stuff they show on these shows.

Also, you dont have to justify yourself to me but I don't see what harm it does sharing a good find. What do you think were going to come after you for taxes or something? Just doesn't seem like any reason to "not spill your finds" assuming you've already found it and flipped it.

I can gurantee your not finding storage wars type finds on a regular basis unless your buiyhng like 500 units plus a month and even then its few and far between your just buying so much volume your going to come across that stuff more often.

Basically my bottom line is if you were asked if storagewars and auction hunters is an accurate representation of the busines and what you find in a tuypical unit the answer is no.

I just mention that i find good stuff all the time in units. i did that because we tend to call it fake when they find good stuff on tv.

What it all comes down to is, what do we consider good stuff?  I don't find guns in every locker like they do on tv. But i find other stuff that is good and in many cases more valuble then guns.

So just because they find and show good stuff on tv does not make it fake. We all find "good stuff" in our units. Does that make our units or findings fake?

So they film for 125 days for a 30min show that is really 22mins allowing time for commercials.
