Title: Son bought 3 lockers this morning
Post by: drbecker on August 30, 2011, 03:40:14 PM
I had to work today and sent my 21 year old son to the auctions at PS.  He is not an experienced auction goer and the last time he bid against himself running himself up to $1000 on a unit when the last other bid was at $600. Well today he bought 3 units at the first place. I have not seen them yet but I thought I would open a thread and try to post some pictures as we get into them. He claims they are all outside units and he paid about $300 for all 3.  Or as he told me $50 for one $175 for one and he can't remember the other one.  Not much detail what is in them he did say one had a lot of boxes and I love boxes.  I think he did okay as all the outside units at that place are at least 10X15 so they must be bigger units. Check later tonight for updates. Oh and it was my money so its my stuff he gets the scrap that is his only source of income as he is going to school.

Okay I worked till 9:30 tonight hauling stuff.

This locker was $150 a 10X15 outside unit. Hauled three huge loads and got it emptied. Best thing I have seen so far is a 3 ton garage jack.  Lots of boxes and bags to go through think i will make money.

The jack:

SOme nice rubber maid trash cans

Lot of big boxes these were hard to move.

What a load looks like the Expedition is cramed full inside as well. Hauled 4 of these tonight.,

Here is the unit he paid $175 for it is  a 10X10 packed better then the $150 unit. Have not started on it. Note the stolen rug Doctor in the front.  Have to find out where it was stolen from and return it.

The other unit a 10X15 we emptied in on e load and my camera had dead batteries. It was $50 very cluttered but it had a washer and dryer showing.  They will be scrap as the dryer had the back off.  It was a very good deal at $50 there was a nice looking aricompresser a Royal typwriter and a Cheap sewing machine.  Lot of stuff to go through yet I am sure that I will make money on this one the washer and dryer will scrap out at $20 to $30.

Looks like he did alright. Nothing super. But should generate a little profit.

On that rug doctor, what makes you think it was stolen? It is a commercial piece of equipment, but on the lower end. The tenant may even had a cleaning business. My father in-law use to own one when the family was cleaning commercial buildings.

He did very well.  That first unit would of gone $200 easy down here.  The second unit would prob of done the same.  With the yard tools, trash cans w/ coaster wheels, gas can, etc. people would of figured lawn cutting buisness or such and bid up the price.

Ahh gotcha, didnt mention that before :)..

Personally though, I would contact them, and see if they are going to give you anything in return for it, if not Id sell it to someone else. May be morally wrong, not sure on the legalities on it. But that is what I would do.

Well that would set me up for a possesion/sale of stolen property the way the law reads in WA not worth it I will just give it back. have returned a lot of UHAUL stuff in the past like carts and blankets normally new looking that says right on it not for sale.

I'd at least steam clean the carpet first if you need to.  ROFL.  But I agree, it builds good will with the store and the manager.
Not worth the potential liability to turn it for $100 or whatever.

Some times you can purchase those used units from stores. And if they did just steal it from the store I'm sure the store billed them for it.

Update: finished moving all the stuff.  As we were cleaning uot the last unit found out from the manager that it was a old woman who had hiring professional movers to mover her stuff in.  Only rented about 4 month. Found one of those chairs that pushes you up and it looks pretty nice.  Furniture was all junk got about 40 boxes and 20 bags to go through yet. Always a good ding when pros moved it in means she still had money when it went into storage. Hoping her jewlery box is in there full of gold.  It took tow very full loads to empty the unit.  That is a lot of stuff!

Okay I found gold tonight.  The stuff on the left is not marked but it is gold just not sure of the caret. The little bag is marked 22Kt $95 the earing inside is marked 90 so must be 22K, the pile next to it is all marked 14K or 525, the necklace on the left is marked 750 so 18K.  The little pile on the top is all marked .925 so sterling silver.  All of this was in a small purse in a bag like it was packed last. This was from the unit that sold for $150.  I was already counting myself in the black on that one this means I will make good money on it.

These 2 Watches were in the bag with the purse. One a Wenger is Swiss not great value the Movado may be worth somethign if it works and if it is real could be fale. Neither is running.

Back to the sorting I have not finsihed the $150 or started the $50 unit. Pretty well done with the $175 and feel I will make money on it. Got the lift chair a CPAP machine a lot of other good stuff including some air Jordan shoes.

Looks good, drbecker!!  You should give your son a bonus.  He seems to have a knack for bargains.  Good luck on the watches, too.  If it's a real Movado, it may pay to get it repaired, as they aren't Timex type.

Did some more digging and found a St Christopher necklace marked 14K in the $50 locker first box I went through. According to my old mechanical scale it weighed 11 grams!  Not sure I believe the scale but it should pay off the $50 locker and then some.

Well I think I am about done.
I have 22grams of 14K, 6.5 of 18K and 1.5 of 22K. Comes out a little over $1100 in gold value I will probably get around $900 to $1000 for it. There is 7Grams of unkown stuff I am sure is gold as well.
Found a lot of other stuff but nothing spectacular.
Have hauled over a ton to the dump and have about 500 pounds to go.
