I have never paid tax.  But in SC I think you do pay tax.  Or maybe only since it's a real auctioneer and such.  Don't really know.

Of course I have a big issue with the tax thing anyways.  Taxes were already paid on the item when purchased new.  Why should you pay yet again on "used" items.

I agree with craig. The whole concept of sales tax is that is to be applied to the "end user." That is why you don't pay tax as a reseller. Since tax has already been paid by the original purchaser, I wouldn't expect to pay tax at an auction. That said, I'm getting my resale permit.

Because it is a rental. Here in Fl. If you rent an apartment for 6 months you pay sales tax. Don't remember why. But if you rent for 7 months you don't pay sales tax.

Falls on the service end I guess.  Don't get me started on the tourist tax.

I hate to say it, but every single sales tax question is going to be state specific. Might be best for all of us to study the sales tax codes in each of our respective states, especially as small business operators.

I knew the California code pretty well when I was living there, and now have to re-learn the Texas laws.

So, my suggestion is to study up and, when asking questions, be sure to include the state you're in. Might even want to put the question in the regional forums.

You are right Matches.  Very State specific.

In FL they charge the sales tax on the unit sale price and the buyers premuim  :o
So you pay 17% more than you bid.  In GA I have not been charged any sales tax  ;D  It is by the state so you need to know before you start bidding  ;)

Well I spoke to soon.  Purchaed a unit last week at SecureCare.  When I get in the door she says it's my $150 bid + sales tax unless you have a tax-id.  I was like WTH -- no mention of that at the start of the auction.  If so I'd of stop bidding at $130 or so.  As such my $150 unit cost me $160.50.
