Title: Karma Added
Post by: Travis on August 01, 2013, 04:29:54 PM
I just enabled a feature called Karma which allows you to "Applaud" or "Smite" other member's comments. You have to have at least 25 posts before you can leave Karma. Hopefully it will add to everyone's experience on the forum, and if not, I can always remove it.

If you're asking if you can smite Admins and Global Moderators, the answer is yes.

It's been my experience that when it's anonymous that it gets abused.

Ive liked the positive karma only as generally trolls get moderated out on forums.  I suspect i am going to manage some neutral karma.  I'm just mouthy enough to annoy people, and just right enough to get positive Karma.  Unless political or economics get brought up then its hard to say, but I have found those can REALLY drive karma.  People get very upset about it if you disagree, and vote you up a lot when you agree.

Then you should fit right in.

My guess is the Karma feature is a non-issue.

Is there a way to track which comment earned us karma?

I don't believe it's that sophisticated.

You get a $25 gift card from Travis, but you have to have obtained 100 positive karma points and they ALL have to come from 100 different members. That last part alone prevents any gift cards from going out as it exceeds the regular contributions made by the 10 or so active members here who do more than just read posts.

You forgot to mention that the offer is revokable for any reason at any time.  ;D

Yes, I did, and now that you mention it I also forgot to say that the rules can change mid-contest and those changes won't be benefitting the participants.

So, it's been a little over a month since Karma was initialized, how are you digging it so far?

It seems like the members who are more opinionated receive more votes. A few politically correct (or extremely considerate) members have come through unscathed.

I think it would be more interesting if you could see what comment people were reading when they cast a vote.

As I said earlier, I think it's a non-issue. My negatives go "up" by about 2 a day. My goal is 100 by the end of September, 2013, so get busy fellas !  ;D

The karma meter doesn't mean a thing as it is obviously inherently poorly designed and as you indicated subject to misuse by any number of people, members, owners, global moderators (I think that covers everyone).

Didn't your mother tell you when you were "back in school" that "names" can't hurt you.  The same thing is true here. People will judge you for what you say or don't say, not because some "meter" says you have "x" plus ratings and "y" negative ratings.

Relax, life is short. Have Travis give you a hug. Ask him about that pic above. He probably remembers it from "back in the day".  ;D

I think it would be more interesting if you could see what comment people were reading when they cast a vote.

That would be nice.   I got a 'smite' yesterday.  Guessing it was the comment in my post about the cost of  mounting tires shouldn't effect what I sell them for.  Unless someone's digging thru old posts.

Its kinda useless if I don't know what they didnt like.....

But at the same time, if people knew what comments they were getting smited for they might censor themselves and that's the last thing I want to happen....that's my job.  :D :D :D  Just kidding

No seriously, I think I'm going to 86 Karma...unless you guys prefer to keep it. Put your hand in the air if you want to keep it. Anyone? Anyone? It's believe it's unanimous.

No you didn't do or say anything wrong. MovieMan is arbitrarily smiting the regulars around here out of spite for all the negative karma he's been getting.

There's nothing arbitrary about any of the smiting or smiling anyone here is doing. Anyone who is doing it has their reasons...unfortunately most of those reasons have nothing to do with valuing or de-valuing a post made by any given member. Instead the smites are being used to promote negative feelings about any given member simply out of ....SPITE...rhymes with smite.

The Karma program (do some research) was originally designed to allow for quick responses to a posting in a given thread, but that's not how it has played out on a variety of websites which use it.  I saw one website where a poster could not use it until they had 340 posts. That's not how it is here, and given the number of people who post here it (and the extent to which they post here) it should be obvious that the rating system is being abused, though not every abuser will admit to it.  ;D

So that's how you justify screwing with it and ruining it's potential use? It should've occurred to you that even though there are hundreds of people lurking here that don't post, they can very easily click the smite link if they don't like what you wrote.

You obviously haven't figured out how this system works or you wouldn't have posted...."even though there are hundreds of people lurking here that don't post, they can very easily click the smite link if they don't like what you wrote."

The fact is that a person CAN NOT cast a smile or smite check if he/she has not posted here. There are more limitations than that, but I'll leave it to you to figure out what they are...you also could ask Travis as he sets the parameters.

So, it means that if a person such as myself or you or anyone is getting a large number of either smiles or smites, that it could easily be coming from just a few people....even ONE person.

But I will tell you this...one can't give oneself a smile...or a smite (for those inclined toward masochism)

I was.....not upset....but more WTF did I say? When I saw the smite against me.
Then I thought, ya know, I don't even know the true definition of smite.   So looked it up.
....................
smite
smīt/
verb
1.
literary
strike with a firm blow.
"he smites the water with his sword"
2.
be strongly attracted to someone or something.
"she was so smitten with the boy"
.......................

Well.   The first definition just doesn't fit.  No one landed a firm blow by anonymously hitting a smite button.
So......must be the second.  Thanks guys.  I'm flattered.   ;D
