The baby ducklings were stuck down in a sewer drain and their mother could not reach them. What part of a human interest story are you failing to grasp?

This is like rescuing birds from a nest in a tree because they might fall.

That sewer pipe is open on both ends. They would have eventually walked/swam out.

And you're right. We wouldn't want ducks to get stuck underground. Besides, we all know what happens when they finally escape that underground labyrinth.
