Shipping Wars....dummies !
« on: December 23, 2012, 12:24:47 PM »
Of course if they only showed the deliveries that were not a problem it wouldn't be as much fun to watch...sort of like showing the mundane storage locker buys if they did that on Storage Wars.

Anyway, in this episode Jarrett (the rookie) has more van problems (get a new van !) and when he gets to the delivery point for a 400 pound  African wood sculpture he finds out it has to go to the second story of the house using an inside staircase.

He is able to get local help from two hefty guys down the block, and it didn't cost him anything, but heres my point...

...when you arrange to make a delivery, get all the terms up front.

I rarely deliver anything, but when I do the price is the first thing to be decided, then the time and MOST IMPORTANTLY...that the delivery will be TO THE CURB. After that it's YOUR resposibility. Even if these guys can't do that, they SHOULD BE ABLE to communicate with the recipient to see any SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES.  Maybe their bidding is more blind than I imagine.

All they have to go on is what's listed in the delivery bid list: http://www.uship.com/find

Too bad they don't make some provision for having more details available to the bidders. I haven't looked at the site, but I would guess dimensions, weight, etc are a minimal requirement.  The guys who win the bids have mentioned that the provided measurements were wrong, shipper didn't mention this, that or the other thing, then they don't want to give an inch when things go wrong, AND they can ding the carrier for any problem.

UShip is a great idea. Wish I would have thought of it first.

Well, don't despair, you still have the rights to every "Baggage Battles" domain name in the universe! (wink)

Personally, I wish I had thought of: the paperclip, the staple, post-its and peanut butter.

Well, don't despair, you still have the rights to every "Baggage Battles" domain name in the universe!

Unfortunately, Baggage Battles flopped. Public interest was never there. As a result, web developers weren't interested in the niche. I'll hold on to the top 7 domains and let the other 40 expire. I'm still banking on these to pay off.

REPUBLICCELLPHONES.COM
REPUBLICCELLULARPHONES.COM
REPUBLICMOBILEPHONES.COM
REPUBLICPHONES.COM
REPUBLICPHONESERVICE.COM
REPUBLICWIRELESSPHONES.COM

If Republic Wireless takes on independent distributors in the future, these domains will sell for a premium. Can you imagine how much a domain like SprintPhones.com or VerizonWirelessPhones.com sold for?

I haven't looked at the site

Then why were you trashing the shippers and the show?
What were you basing your opinion on...ignorance? :P

Yes, I was basing my opinion on ignorance.

Or, put another way, it was an OPINION.  In my OPINION it is stupid for those shippers to agree to something when they don't have all the facts of the delivery.

I didn't feel like checking out the website because I have no interest in becoming a free-lance shipper, but if I did have any interest it would have been squelched if I saw I had to operate with minimal information on what was required.

In my OPINION the show, just like Storage Wars, is aiming at entertainment and therefore they don't show us any but the OUT OF THE ORDINARY hauls and only show us the hauls that are going to create problems and therefore conflict and ENTERTAINMENT.

I actually enjoy seeing the guys go at it and I think the character ROY is quite good...he seems to be a problem solver for any load though he as well as the others often comes up against it when it gets right down to it and sometimes (just like on Storage Wars) loses money in his efforts.

Edit:

Here are a couple of definitions which might help in ANY discussion, here or elsewhere:

******

ig·no·rance

/ˈignərəns/

Noun

Lack of knowledge or information: "he acted in ignorance of basic procedures".

***

o·pin·ion

/əˈpinyən/

Noun

1.A view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.
2.The beliefs or views of a large number or majority of people about a particular thing.

Synonyms
view - judgement - judgment - mind - notion - idea

***

I especially like the first definition (above) of OPINION.

And I understand why YOU are comfortable with the fact that I am comfortable with that defintion.

But, I am a little confused about who's on first.  ;D

All they have to go on is what's listed in the delivery bid list: uship.com/find

Just watched an episode where Jarrett was looking at the details on his laptop....to wit:

"...Transporter must be willing to pick up in the early morning hours.....not let them know you are on your way."

The shipper was returning 48,000 defective toy pirate swords from Baltimore, MD to Mobile, Alabama. They have already told the pirate toy guy they would NOT take them back. This should be a warning sign to the 4 transporters on the show....but then there wouldn't be a show without conflict.

So, apparently THERE IS a spot on the u-bid shipper form for them to put in special details. Of course they don't HAVE to put in anything special (especially if it's a  problem) but would be nice if they would.  Even better would be the opportunity for the prospective shipper to ASK them a question; don't know if that is allowed or not.

Just went to the U-Ship website and looked over a map with green and red pins designating from/to.

As I explored the map and the website I found THEY DO HAVE a place where the carriers can ask questions of the shippers.  Here's a cut and paste on one item...shows questions asked by several carriers.

12/23/2012

Hello shipper let me start by introducing my self, my name is Joe with Average Joe's Relocators. I would love to do this move for you, is your inventory list complete or do you have an inventory list yet, will there be someone at the pick up and drop off that can help, is there any stairs involved at the pick up or drop off, do you have a budget in mind, and what days do you need it pick up and delivered. Please let me know if we can work something out thank you.

Question:
12/24/2012

can you secure the item to a palelt?.

Question:
12/24/2012

Hello i will be going down on the 27th and can make the drop off on the same day the range will be secured inside a box truck keeped dry, are there any stairs and will be be any help there to put where you would like it?.

Question:
12/25/2012

By any chance could this item be picked up on the 30th for delivery on the 31st? Thank you, Raul. (luarhh).

Question:
12/26/2012

I see your preferred pick up date has passed. I am available to do this from 12/28-1/2. Please let me know if those dates work for you. Thanks. Allen(MoverVet)
