Title: What's the Value? Challenge
Post by: mrsmith on November 28, 2011, 07:37:11 AM
This weekend took me on an hour drive out to a house that was going up for auction.  The lady wanted to sell a garage full of furniture and initially talked to a guy I know that lives a couple hours away.(Networking scored me this find)

My challenge to you is this.  Watch the video here http://www.theartofpicking.com/video.html (http://www.theartofpicking.com/video.html).  What would you pay for such a haul?  What would you sell it for?  I'll give the person closest to my actually numbers a bumper sticker.  The stickers are up on my blog, I can't figure out how to link them here.

Game on!

Got a couple responses. I'm kind of stunned no one is really taking up the challenge.  I found an interesting item in a house yesterday. First time I ever bought a camel saddle!  Google them, I might make a little table out of the one I found.

Anyone ever repurpose, or rethink how to use items?

That's because you're trying to buy our valuation research efforts for the cost of a bumper sticker. :P

Lol, no, I've been doing this long enough to know the value myself.  If I can't, or do not know what it is, I have a nice network of people that do.

I thought it would be fun to see how people valued things around the US.  Some items are more valuable in other places. I know whenever i watch Storage Wars, or American Pickers, I am always doing a quick estimate of how I would value what they buy.

Anyone ever do that? Look at a locker on Storage Wars and say, "I bet that goes for xxxx amount?" Or "I wouldn't pay over xxx for that locker"

That's all I was hoping to accomplish. I thought the bumper stickers might provide an added incentive.

Im usually repurposing stuff. Sometimes it can make or break you. For an example. I got a locker that looked good from the door. But going through it, what a disaster. Nothing of real value. Either it was broken, or it was junk. However I did spot a solid wood entertainment center, but like I said everything was damaged. What I did was cut off the top part, sand it down from where I cut it. Then refinished it with a nice stain. Essentially turning it into a nice solid wood coffee table. This costed me a little extra money to get the stain. But well worth it.

I did not make a profit with this locker. But if it was not for me turning that Ent. Center into a coffee table, I would of lost alot more money then what I did lose. I almost broke even.

Jross,

I've heard of people doing that with those old entertainment centers. Pretty smart if you ask me; with all the flat screen tv's no one will touch an entertainment center at auctions.

Was it difficult to do? Time consuming?

I just did a lamp. These industrial repurposing things people are coming up with blow my mind. http://www.restorationhardware.com/ (http://www.restorationhardware.com/)  is a good example of people repurposing. THey have some sweet items I would love to own, but dang, look at the price tags!

Sanding it just right was the most time consuming, think I got it all done in 3 days. That is with giving it time to dry and working it around my schedule.
